After dropping news that the Elantra GT hatch will be discontinued, Hyundai is having a go at lifting our spirits with the introduction of the 2021 Elantra N Line sedan. The sporty compact sets itself apart from the rest of the Elantra lineup with an extra dose of power, snappier design, and a sporty bent. It also continues Hyundai’s slow-drip introduction of its N performance sub-branding in the U.S. and takes takes up a position in the thin sporty compact four-door market being temporarily vacated by the Honda Civic Si. The N Line’s engine will sound familiar if you remember the old Elantra Sport, which this car effectively replaces. Under its hood, the 2021 Hyundai Elantra N Line features a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine making 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. If you w...
It’s hard to believe, but the Porsche Panamera is already due for a mid-cycle refresh. The current Porsche sedan debuted for the 2017 model year, finally ridding itself of the hunchback rear end that ruined the last-generation Panamera’s otherwise sleek profile. To prove that it hasn’t been resting on its laurels and basking in the car’s triumphant redesign, Porsche took the upcoming refreshed Panamera to Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife to break some records. The refreshed Porsche Panamera, which is set to be revealed soon—likely—as a 2021 model, set a lap of 7 minutes, 29.81 seconds at the ‘Ring—quick enough to dethrone the current executive car class record holder, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door. You might recall that Mercedes touted a faster time for the AMG GT, and you’d be right, but N...
Cars require untold numbers of engineers to go from paper to sheet metal, so it always seems unfair to lay the success or failure of one at the foot of just one of them. That’s the nature of leadership, though. You take the win or the loss. Albert Biermann didn’t personally choose the parts and calibrations that make the 2020 Hyundai Sonata N Line drive like it does, but his philosophy has been so faithfully executed in the way it drives that it’s impossible not to recognize his influence. Biermann, as it has been extensively reported, is a veteran of BMW. Before his hiring at Hyundai, it would have been hyperbole to compare the way a Sonata drives to a BMW because that wasn’t what Hyundai was going for, but now, things are different. Now, the new Sonata has a distinctly Germanic feel, and...
This is more than just a casual midcycle refresh of Bentley’s strong-selling SUV: Every single exterior panel of the 2021 Bentley Bentayga, apart from the roof and the doors, is new. So, too, is the infotainment system and all the switchgear and vents at the center of the dash. And although a quick read of the spec sheet suggests much of the hardware is carried over, our first drive of the 2021 Bentley Bentayga V8 reveals an SUV that feels subtly refined and improved throughout. The 542-hp V-8 is the first of what will be a three-model Bentayga lineup revised and refreshed for the 2021 model year. It will be joined in the first quarter of 2021 by the top-of-the-range, 627-hp, 12-cylinder Bentayga Speed, and in the second quarter by the Bentayga Hybrid, whose PHEV powertrain comprises a 335...
As hinted by a leaked order guide back in May, the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro receives new Wild Cherry Design packages. Now, thanks to GM, we have more official details on what those packages include apart from sharing a name with the 1970s band behind the song “Play That Funky Music” and the only good flavor of Pepsi. Wild Cherry Tintcoat is new to the Camaro’s exterior color palette for 2021, replacing the previous Garnet Red paint option. Those who want to get the most out of the new color can choose one of two Wild Cherry Design packages. For the Camaro LT and LZ trim levels there’s the Wild Cherry Design package 1, which includes special forged aluminum wheels in a polished finish with Camaro shield emblem center caps, black metallic hash mark stripes on the fenders...
Purchasing a new car can be an exciting, emotional, from-the-gut decision—and it can be a punch in the gut when you later discover how much it costs to insure or fuel that car, or how little it’s worth when it’s time to find new wheels. Ownership costs, rather than the mere transaction price, should be at the forefront of your purchasing criteria. Luckily for you, MotorTrend’s partner, IntelliChoice, has you covered. IntelliChoice’s 5-Year Cost to Own and Best Overall Value Awards IntelliChoice has been at the forefront of analyzing vehicle ownership costs for more than 30 years. Our Best Overall Value of the Year (BOVY) Awards recognize those mainstream vehicles whose total cost of ownership is significantly lower than expected compared to other models in the same class. These vehicles a...
The outgoing Audi S3’s understated appearance doesn’t quite match its strong power output and hearty exhaust note, but that all is fixed now that Audi has given the sporty compact a makeover. It will no longer be such an outward wallflower. With a full redesign, Audi has equipped the S3 with a more memorable exterior design to go with its even greater power. Dominating the new S3’s front end is a more assertive grille flanked by large air inlets. The updated headlights, available in matrix LED form, are connected by a thin vent stretches its way across the nose just above the grille. The new side profile reveals more fluid character lines running across the previously amorphous body sides. In the rear, you’ll find new taillights and a familiar quad exhaust setup. Early in the new S3&...
The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette has just been recalled for the first time because it’s front trunk might not open beyond the 10 minutes that pass after you’ve turned it off. According to a release by Chevy, the new ‘Vette fails to comply with S4.1 of Federal/Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 401, “Interior Trunk Release.” Essentially, the C8 enters a “sleep” mode 10 minutes after it’s been off and the electronic front trunk release may not work as a result. GM plans on fixing the problem via a wireless, over-the-air software update that will “(lower) the voltage required to wake the vehicle from the low power “sleep” mode.” This essentially means that the C8 will be able to unlatch the hood if the interior frunk release button is pressed even when the Corvette is in its sleep mode. Owne...
Last week, Bentley gave us a glimpse of a future that becomes reality today. The opulent SUV you see before you is the 2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed, which pairs the new Bentayga’s look with the tried-and-true existing mechanicals of the outgoing Bentayga Speed, just introduced last February. That means this exceptional fast SUV stays quick, and looks good doing it. 2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed: What’s New? The short answer is that the new 2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed puts the current 2020’s mechanicals into the updated-for-2021 body. There is of course a lot more to it, since the updated sheetmetal and interior afford the Speed lots of ways to differentiate itself from its lesser V-8 powered siblings. Another big chunk of new? The Speed model is also now the only way to get the W-12 eng...
One of our favorite affordable hatchbacks is saying goodbye, and we’re not at all ready to see it go. Hyundai will discontinue the Elantra GT in the U.S. after the 2020 model year to focus on its growing crossover lineup. Hyundai said the decision was “due to [an] expanded SUV lineup that includes Venue and Kona.” It’s a shame that Hyundai is sacrificing the Elantra GT, because we always viewed it as a great crossover alternative thanks to its spacious rear seats, cavernous cargo capacity, and strong visibility. We also love that the hatchback is nimble, relatively quiet, and fun to take around a corner. This also marks the end of the road for the even-more-entertaining Elantra GT N Line. Along with a more powerful engine making 201 horsepower, this variant offers a slick-shifting six-spee...
There are 72 steps leading up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s entrance—you know, the ones a certain fictional boxer played by Sylvester Stallone hoofed up in Rocky? That’s not many steps, nor much of a distance, and neither is the 1,000 miles traveled by Stallone’s stretched Cadillac Escalade ESV limo that’s currently for sale by its builder. While it might take you some sweat equity to mimic Rocky’s famous climb up the Philly museum’s steps, buying his low-mile Caddy only requires a cool $350,000. And you might even be able to drive the Escalade up those steps, too. Albeit, very carefully. That’s because its maker, Becker Auto Design, has added 20 inches to the wheelbase—stretching this Cadillac SUV beyond the Escalade ESV’s already yawn...
General Motors is preparing to push its Super Cruise driver-assist tech to more of its brands in the coming model years. For now, though, the hands-free driving feature is exclusive to Cadillac. The setup relies on regularly updated high-definition maps, which work with the adaptive cruise control and lane-centering self-steering functions to accurately locate and place a so-equipped vehicle on more than 200,000 miles of Super Cruise-friendly highways with little-to-no driver interaction required. Additionally, an interior-mounted camera monitors the driver’s attention as a safeguard to ensure the individual behind the wheel can take control of the car if necessary. And aside from the tech’s upfront cost, using it is free—for a time. You see, Super Cruise is not a permanent fixture i...
