We’ve largely enjoyed a lot of cricket noises on the alternative powertrain front where Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Stellantis is concerned—at least ever since the Daimler divorce. (Remember the fuel-cell-powered Commander 2 Concept of 2001, which included a full refinery under the hood to separate hydrogen from methanol, which must have been slightly easier to come by than hydrogen in the day?) Well, Peugeot has had its own hydrogen-powered research vehicles and Opel benefited from years of GM hydrogen research, so once again Germany is leading the charge (with substantial help from France), as Stellantis prepares fuel-cell power for … light commercial vans. See all 6 photos What Stellantis Vehicles Will Get Fuel Cells, and When? The European brands of Stellantis have had some success selli...
Repair American Roads and Bridges One in five miles, or 173,000 total miles, of our highways and major roads are in poor condition, as well as 45,000 bridges. Delays caused by traffic congestion alone cost over $160 billion per year, and motorists are forced to pay over $1,000 every year in wasted time and fuel. The President is proposing a total increase of $115 billion to modernize the bridges, highways, roads, and main streets that are in most critical need of repair. This includes funding to improve air quality, limit greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce congestion. His plan will modernize 20,000 miles of highways, roads, and main streets, not only “fixing them first” but “fixing them right,” with safety, resilience, and all users in mind. It will fix the most e...
Patchwork denim will always have a nostalgic charm to me. The splicing of fabrics and intentional scruffiness makes it feel like a project I’d have taken on in week five of summer holidays after watching one too many episodes of That 70s Show. However this humble denim trend has against all odds been slowly making its way into luxury collections. In 2020 Celine brought us the patchwork button-front mini skirt, Gucci created an epic blazer pieced together with numerous swatches and most recently Victoria Beckham has brought us two-tone flared jeans. All patchwork denim tends to have a 70s sensibility, playing with silhouettes such as flares and wide-leg jumpsuits which were all popular in that decade. Thanks to the DIY element this is a trend that really ...
Charity auctions for first-off-the-line vehicles have become a thing of late, and given the hammer prices on vehicles like the first 2021 Ford Bronco ($1,075,000) and this latest multi-million-dollar 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 just sold by Barrett-Jackson, it doesn’t seem like the trend is ending anytime soon. Nor should it! The headlines generate buzz for deserving charities, and the sales generate proceeds. With at least one million-dollar-plus Bronco and Hummer rolling around, too, maybe you won’t feel so bad paying sticker—or even a markup—for your hotly anticipated new truck or SUV. We hope you don’t have to, but we’re sure the Hummer’s new owner doesn’t mind paying well over sticker to benefit Tunnel to Towers, a charity that assists injured vete...
We are on the verge of one of the biggest automotive title fights in history. It isn’t the newest Golf R and Civic Type R going toe to toe or even Lamborghini and Porsche once duking it out on the Nürburgring. No, it’s actually the upcoming battle between the new Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler for American off-road SUV supremacy. And one critical theater in this war will assuredly play out in the factory parts and accessory catalogs from Ford and Jeep as well as the broader aftermarket. Was the timing (and location) chosen intentionally to rain on Jeep’s parade? Maybe. After all, it is the Jeep Easter Safari. What matters more are the new goodies that Ford is ginning up for the Bronco via collaborations with RTR, ARB, and 4 Wheel Parts. RTR, for its part, isn̵...
“When it comes to colour, you don’t want something that requires too much precision,” reveals hairstylist to the stars George Northwood. “Something that has become a bit of a signature of ours is a softer, natural balayage. With the disturbance of COVID and salons shutting for months on end, people are stepping away from that fresh, highlighted look that is quite high-maintenance and is tricky to maintain well at home without your colourist.” “Over the first lockdown, a lot of my clients saw their natural colour growing through and have actually gotten used to it,” Northwood continues. “So we are now seeing a lot more clients who are now experimenting with keeping their hair closer to their natural colour, which is far more easily m...
It’s an understatement to say that we like dresses here at Who What Wear. We spend a long time working out which frocks are going to be the ones we, and you, obsess over during the year. We put together dress reports on the names to watch for 2021, which include the key dress trends to know. Plus, we hone in on the brands that are getting it spot on right now (yes, Aje, we’re looking at you). Alas, in many ways, dresses over 2020 took a bit of a dip. With fewer weddings and big events to attend, our posh frocks got only a rare outing. That said, the house dress became particularly popular, with loose silhouettes and unrestrictive material becoming vital in our dress purchases. But with restrictions easing and the chance that gatherings, inclu...
As several warehouses and stores shuttered over the past 12 months, the fashion industry faces huge challenges and strains that pose an inevitable threat to businesses. Many of us won’t be shopping in the same way right now, but even a like on Instagram or a message of support can provide a boost for these brands. I certainly don’t want anyone to feel like they have to buy more right now in a time of such heightened worry, but at the same time, after working in the fashion industry for nine years, I want to support the brands and pieces that I love and treasure. As an editor at Who What Wear, I typically spend a lot of time looking at new-in products and so every week, I update this story with the pieces that have caught my eye and that really stand out. I usually introduce thi...
This week has been the first time we could both ditch the coats AND meet six people outside, marking the start of drinks-in-the-park season. At my park last night people really dressed up for the occasion, wearing looks that you’d expect to see at a festival. It seems like Rihanna has also missed dressing up, as was pictured doing a groceries run in an outfit that screams ‘it’s summer!’ She wore a printed colourful shirt, with a jazzy palm tree pattern which is from the collaboration between Celine Homme and American artist Tyson Reeder. This print is actually a copy of one of his art works called ‘Autobahn’. This isn’t the only menswear item Rihanna added to the look, as she wore a pair of pink boxers by ERL that are visible underne...
Lexus was an early adopter of hybrids, having introduced the RX hybrid SUV in 2005 and offering hybrid variants of many of other models since—just like its parent, Toyota. Also like Toyota, Lexus seems to be dragging its feet a bit on battery electric vehicles (BEV); the luxury automaker’s first effort, the UX-based UX300e, won’t even be sold in America. But an ambitious turnaround is afoot, evidenced by the newly-revealed LF-Z Electrified concept. It previews Lexus’s big plans to move to the front of the pack come 2025, the year by which they have promised all Lexus models will offer some sort of electrification. But First, That Design Let’s start with the LF-Z Electrified’s design, which is, er, different. Lexus’s controversial hourglass-shap...
Volvo XC40 Full Overview Convenience. It all comes down to convenience. Our society is built around the convenience afforded by the internal combustion engine. Whether moving ourselves or our goods, gasoline and diesel have made everything possible. As has a network of hundreds of thousands of branded gas stations around the globe; miles apart or across the street, they allow us to refuel a vehicle in a matter of minutes. This is the market reality facing battery-powered electric vehicles. They’re catching up quickly, but even the best haven’t reached parity yet. When we ask which type of car we should buy, the answer is a question: What price will you pay for convenience? For clarity, it’s useful to remove variables by examining a vehicle offering both types of powertrai...
PSA: I’ve just spent the last hour scrolling my way through NET-A-PORTER’s new S/S 21 shop (which is, fittingly, named Ready-to-Wear), and I have to say, if you’re having a dull week, this might just perk you up. Filled with so many fantasy summer buys, this new-in treasure trove is sure to set any fashion lover’s heart racing, and I speak from experience. The colours! The dramatic silhouettes! The versatile accessories! As someone who can’t wait to get back into the swing of dressing for more than just my sofa, this edit has seriously sparked joy. Yep, we are 100% invested in endorphin dressing this summer because, honestly, we all deserve it after the year we’ve had. After my cheeky browsing session, I decided to put together five dream outfits that pe...
