The thing about celebrity engagement rings is that the longer you read about them, the more skewed your perception of “expensive” becomes. A ring that racked up a £150,000 receipt is no longer considered to be worth a second glance when you compare it to one that cost a cool £7 million. In reality, though, nearly every celebrity engagement ring is absurdly beautiful, large and therefore, pricey. What’s more, the stories and proposals behind them make every ring that little bit more interesting. From Victoria Beckham‘s incredible engagement ring from David Beckham (apparently she has 14 others in the collection, as you do) to Jennifer Lopez’s pink jewel from Ben Affleck (remember Bennifer?), there are so many we know you’ll be keen to ogle. As for more re...
For decades, Porsche has established the benchmark in many (if not all) vehicle classes that it competes in. From the 911 to the Macan, every Porsche is known for its superior handling, body control, and finesse. The Porsche Cayenne is no exception. Since its inception in 2003, the Cayenne has proven naysayers wrong, winning comparison tests and even MotorTrend SUV of the Year. Now, as a new generation emerges, the Cayenne is once again making some noise. The Mercedes-Benz GLE has had a lot of the same success as the Porsche (its predecessor, the Mercedes ML, won Truck of the Year in 1998), but it’s never been a segment standout like the Cayenne. That doesn’t mean it’s far behind, though. As the line’s highest performance variant, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S‘ ma...
Overlanding has become a thing in America. Before the coronavirus pandemic tapped the brakes, people all over the country were jumping into their 4x4s and taking the road less traveled, turning away from the interstates and the neon-lit desolation of cheap hotels and fast food joints, journeying instead along the quiet back roads and trails that still crisscross the country. Overlanding has made the voyage as important as the destination. Where I grew up, it always was. Australia is about the same size as the lower 48 states but has just 7 percent of the population, most of which lives within 100 miles of the eastern and southern coasts. What in the U.S. is called the Heartland is in Australia called the Outback. No prairies and cornfields and red-painted barns here, though: Most of inland...
See all 67 photos Ford has confirmed production plans are underway, a new “Built for America” ad campaign has been crafted, and we have a few new, vague details about the electric F-150. The pure battery-powered F-150 would be in addition to the 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid that has been added to the lineup as part of the truck’s latest redesign. The best-selling truck will continue to be offered with a raft of available gasoline and diesel engines, as well. New Plant for 2022 Ford F-150 Electric Pickup Ford officials say they have broken ground on a new facility in the Rouge complex and will add 300 jobs to build the electric F-150 there, along with battery assembly for both the EV and the F-150 PowerBoost hybrid. The most advanced Ford plant to date, the new facility will use...
Ram Trucks introduced a novel take on the limited-edition pickup earlier this year when it began rolling out its “Built to Serve” line of 1500 pickups. These special-edition trucks were to be released in batches of 1,000 to 2,000 units, with each run decorated in honor of one of the five branches of America’s armed forces. So far, we’ve seen Ram’s Built to Serve 1500 pickups celebrating the Army and Navy, and now comes the third model in the line, representing the Air Force—just in time for that service branch’s 73rd anniversary. Landing in showrooms in the fourth quarter of this year, likely as 2021 models, the Ram 1500 Built to Serve Air Force trucks will be available in two “aeronautical” and exclusive paint colors: Anvil and Billet Silver...
In Carolyn Mair’s book, The Psychology of Fashion, she says, “in some cases, fashion precedes political change; at other times it follows it.” Thanks to the pandemic of 2020, we’re very much looking at the latter exception. Overnight, with very little warning, (let’s be honest—many of us were working from home and still are and during the height of true lockdown), we’ve all had to adjust our daily lives and routines. Our need for constricting garments and more formal attire was suddenly made completely obsolete. No more suits, no more jeans, and, in some cases, no more bras. While some might rejoice in the lack of the aforementioned, it’s also meant we have had little reason to dress up—no more sequin dresses for parties, no more wedding ...
Two words I have heard being used a lot this autumn by fashion buyers is “quiet luxury.” This aesthetic is certainly nothing new, as it is a phrase that perfectly describes the Phoebe Philo era at Celine and the ethos behind Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s 14-year-old brand The Row. However this move towards classic, elevated pieces, that are beautiful and special, but not too shouty or flashy, is particularly resonating in 2020. Elizabeth von der Goltz, Global Buying Director, at Net-a-Porter anticipates that this autumn winter 2020 season they will see the customer buying classic luxury pieces: “We predict the customer will continue to shop for more investment pieces from the likes of Bottega and Loewe, to fine jewelry and watches from the likes of Audemars Pigu...
The fashion industry can place a lot of weight on newness, with a constant quest for the next It thing, the next big designer, and the trend we’ll be wearing in six, 12 or 18 months’ time. We are, however, slowly seeing a shift in how we think about shopping, with an emphasis on longevity and wearability over viral pieces. Building a wardrobe of classics can offer a more sustainable approach to fashion. This is why we launched our Survival of the Chicest series, which highlights the items we think will always rise high above trends, making them the perfect pieces to invest in and add to your capsule (or not-so-capsule) wardrobe. We’ve already covered the basics (think leather jackets, trench coats, Breton T-shirts, little black dresses and white shirts), and next, up we...
It’s London Fashion Week! Well, sort of. On a usual runway-packed day, team Who What Wear would be up bright and early, donning our glad rags and hitting the streets of Soho, but in COVID-tainted 2020, elasticated waistbands, slouchy knits and a messy topknot is our FROW look of choice. Sigh. But ever the optimists, we have decided to embrace our new hermit-like existence and celebrate everything that Great British style has to offer—from the comfort of our sofas, anyway. While we don’t have our usual proximity to the action, we still wanted to find a way to champion the amazing Brit designers whose collections usually hit the runways twice a year. Every fashion editor has a list of names that they particularly look forward to, ...
Even though this year’s race will look a little bit different, without the thousands of fans lining the stands, Le Mans itself is still the same 8.5 notorious miles of straights, chicanes, and flat-out corners. Just ask Andy Pilgrim, who has raced at the 24 hours of Le Mans six times in his career and knows the track as well as anyone. But his first memory of racing at the famed street circuit has nothing to do with racing at all. It has to do with bacon. It was 1996 and Pilgrim was behind the wheel for New Hardware Racing, a New Zealand-based team that was running a Porsche 911 GT2. Being his first appearance at Le Mans, Pilgrim wanted to get to the track nice and early—only he made the mistake of showing up a bit too early. MotorTrend is the EXCLUSIVE PLACE in the U.S. where v...
