More than just a form of expression, art represents hope for many communities around the world. But unlike some "fuzzy feeling", wrote prison abolitionist Mariame Kaba, hope requires work. "You have to actually put in energy, time, and you have to be clear-eyed. And you have to hold fast to a vision." The Cultural Institute of Radical Contemporary Arts (CIRCA) was founded upon this premise back in 2020, a year in which the world was desperate for hope. Each year since, the organization has held an annual arts prize for established and emerging creatives from around the world who showcase work that inspires change. The 2023 CIRCA PRIZE calls out to artists of all backgrounds to submit work that they believe represents hope and responds to the platform's 20:23 manifesto, Hope: The Art of Read...
Womxn in Windows is a platform with the mission to spread the ideas of underrepresented womxn (cis, trans and non-binary inclusive) through moving image. After breaking the internet with its various parody footwear options, including the ridiculous Big Red Boots, MSCHF now has its sights set on the bags industry with a Microscopic Handbag modeled after Louis Vuitton's OnTheGo tote.Measuring 657 by 222 by 700 micrometers, the semi-translucent handbag is smaller than a grain of sea salt. According to MSCHF's chief creative officer Kevin Wiesner, the micro bag was conceptualized as a commentary on shrinking luxury handbags. What was once something that should be as functional as possible has become a flashy accessory in which usefulness is seen as secondary. The OnTheGo silhouette was chosen for its simple rectangle shape and prominent logo, meanwhile, its slight translucence is so the bag is more visible when put under the backlight of a micro...
Andy Warhol is a talent beyond pop art, often picking up his 35mm Minox camera to capture photographs of his daily surroundings, fascinations, and moments. Ever an opportunist, having a camera in hand enabled Warhol to capture now-iconic imagery, of which more than 40 are now on display at the Voyages avec Warhol exhibition, presented by Château La Coste in collaboration with Hedges Projects.Curated from the James R. Hedges, IV Collection, the collection includes imagery spotlighting dear friends of Warhol's, like Halston, Dolly Parton, and Keith Haring. Likewise, we find lesser-known examples in the artist's oeuvre, showcasing the interiors of cars he may have found or traveled in, airplanes, hotel lobby chandeliers and seedy toilets, as well as many examples from Warhol's "Sex Parts and ...
Romanian artist Saul Steinberg and the renowned modernist designers Charles and Ray Eames were a natural creative blend so much so that their encounters resulted in a digital exhibition of works created during and after the time of their friendship. Together with Steinberg's wife Hedda Sterne, the group collaborated on various works from photographs to reimagined Eames chairs. After moving to Los Angeles, Steinberg and Sterne began engaging with the Eameses which sparked experimental efforts such as photographs taken at the notable Case Study House No. 8 built in Pacific Palisades. Projecting a few of Steinberg's drawings of women onto Ray and Hedda, the photographs portrayed a quirky and fun reality. They created movies about drawings and Los Angeles while turning eucalyptus leaves into bi...
Gugzay is the UK director and photographer behind ‘What Makes You’, a project distilling the duality of human emotion through intimate polaroids. If there was one word that underpins Gugzay, full name Gurinder Singh Kumar, and his work it’s “vulnerability”.This approach to his craft began when Gugzay was given a prognosis that lead him to believe his life was going to be brought to a sudden halt. Met with a situation where doctors thought he didn’t have long left, Gugzay was propelled to seize the day and make a difference with his craft since starting in 2019.“It’s something that still lives with me right now. It just taught me that even when you’re young, life can come at you at any moment, and time isn’t promised,” he tells Hypebeast, “Every day we wake up is truly another chance.”Since...
