Hoonigan Remembers Ken Block

Earlier this month, it was announced that Ken Block, the 55-year-old professional rally driver and co-founder of Hoonigan and DC Shoes, was killed in a tragic snowmobile accident near his ranch in Utah. The news sent shockwaves across the motorsports and extreme sports community he helped shape as well as the millions he’s inspired throughout the years with his Gymkhana YouTube videos and other high-octane content. Celebrating his life and legacy, the Hoonigan team breaks radio silence with a moving compilation video recounting some of the highlights of Block’s storied career, showing clips of his times as a rally driver, behind-the-scenes footage, and stunts across skateboarding, snowboarding, and motocross. The video ends with words to live by from Block himself. “I gue...

‘Art of the Terraces’ Explores the Legacy of Casual Culture on Football and Fashion

Sambas and Stone Island may be ubiquitous at this point, but in England during the 1970s till the 1990s, it was a symbol of camaraderie for many and a calling card to get in a brawl for the most extreme. Casual Culture, sometimes referred to as Terrace Culture, was one of the first and perhaps most iconic football-fashion movements and the theme of a new exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. As British clubs, such as Liverpool F.C. and Nottingham Forest F.C., began their European success in the late ’70s, many supporter groups came home from away fixtures with sneakers and fits that were months away from appearing in any local shops. “You had youths who didn’t want to identify themselves as particularly from one team,” said Grant Fleming, an East Londoner who was a part of the...

Claire Tabouret and Nathan Thelen Collaborate on New Work at FOG Design+Art Fair

While Art is typically created through a singular voice, history has provided rare glimpses of artist duos — from Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Anni and Josef Albers, to DABSMYLA, along with Claire Tabouret and Nathan Thelen. Speaking on the latter couple, the French and American duo are showcasing a joint body of work as part of FOG Design+Art fair that opened today in San Francisco. The new artwork centers around Pamela Colman Smith, a 20th Century artist, writer and occultist best known for her illustrations on the Rider-Waite tarot deck from 1909. Tabouret and Thelen were recently inspired by Smith’s work as they created wall frescoes in their newly renovated home in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. The eponymously titled exhibition carries a similar mysticism as Thelen prese...

A Professor Fired for Showing Artwork of the Prophet Muhammad Sues School

Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota is facing criticism over the firing of a professor who had shown an illustration of the Prophet Muhammad in an art history class. As first reported by The New York Times, Dr. Erika López Prater had repeatedly warned her students in the syllabus that they may opt out of seeing images of holy figures, such as a Medieval artwork of the Prophet Muhammad, as it is considered in some Muslim circles to be un-Islamic. “The prophet himself was aware that if people saw his face portrayed by people, they would soon start worshiping him,” a scholar told CNN. “So he himself spoke against such images, saying ‘I’m just a man.’” One student, Aram Wedatalla, who also serves as the president of Hamline’s Muslim student association took offense to the lesson and co...

Pen & Paper: Stefan Glerum

“You start to think in geometric shapes as building blocks again.” Music is a big part of your work, be it through a band poster or record sleeve. What music are you most into? I think it all started with ’80s and ’90s hip hop for me, and through that I became very interested in sampling and what the sampling sources were for those records. So I learned a lot about funk, soul, disco, jazz etc. — because I wanted to create tracks myself. And actually that whole approach made me interested in a lot more kinds of music, mostly from the sixties. So I guess my taste would be very eclectic, although I tend to go for a bit more ‘beefy’ music than something ethereal. At the studio, I play a lot of ’90s hip hop, electro, house, punk and psychedelic music. From time-to-time, I still make music mysel...

6 New Trends French Girls Deem Essential for 2023

We often talk about how the French aesthetic is heavily built on wardrobe classics; never-date pieces that make getting dressed a simplified process. While this applies to many a French dresser, I have noticed that, for 2023, that a series of bolder French fashion trends are coming through.  Witnessed on the streets of Paris this month, French women seem to be tapping into a slew of runway trends this season. From the It jacket that cropped up at Dion Lee and Chloé to the skirt style with deep ’90s minimalist roots, Gallic girls are interpreting the latest trends in their own unique way, styling them with more pared-back piecing, and giving the rest of us major outfit inspiration in the process.  So, which 2023 trends are French women prioritis...

Hailey Bieber Swapped Her Ankle Boots for the Trend That’s All Over Zara and M&S

Patent footwear is a trend that’s slowly gaining momentum. I’ve had my eye on a pair Saint Laurent slingbacks in a high-shine finish for months now but, prior to that, the fabrication had completely fallen off my radar. Of course, there was a buzz surrounding vinyl coats not all that long ago, but shoes? They generally hadn’t been given the glossy treatment in years. Now, however, I expect that all to change after Hailey Bieber stepped out in a sleek knee-high patent boot this week. Turns out, I’m not the only one who’s into Saint Laurent’s current aesthetic, as Bieber’s coat, purse and boots all come from the French fashion house. My favourite component of her outfit, however, is her patent-boot and sheer-tight pairing, which f...

These Stick-On False Nails Are So Good They Rival a Salon Manicure

Thankfully, stick-on nails are having a moment, which means there’s been serious innovation in the products on offer—and there’s also a lot more choice out there. This new generation of press-ons goes beyond the basic plain colour offerings I remember experimenting with in the past. They offer fun and colourful designs, a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and even the glue quality has improved, too. “Nail art boomed during the pandemic and the stick-on nail category has majorly grown and innovated since then,” says nail artist Ashleigh Bamber. “It’s a great way to wear cute nail art designs without actually having to do any of the hard work or wait for a salon appointment.” That said, while stick-on nails are convenient, long-lasting, and affordable, they can still cause damage if not appl...

I Did a Makeup Bag Cleanout, and These 13 Products Are Getting the Boot

Whenever people ask me what beauty products I’m into, I’m always caught off guard. I know it’s kind of ridiculous considering I’m a beauty editor and all, but it’s only because I’m going through the many mountains of products I test in my head. There are so many products I like, but thinking about what I don’t like is the best way for me to narrow down my options. Before I start this potentially controversial list, I want to point out that beauty is subjective, and a product that might give me The Ick could be someone’s holy grail. We all have different skin types, makeup preferences, and so on, so I am not judging, and vice versa, I hope! You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. So we reimagined what a dating should be. It begins with giving you bac...

Wangechi Mutu Releases Limited-Edition Print Alongside New Monograph by Phaidon

To accompany her first monograph, Kenyan artist Wangechi Mutu worked with Phaidon and Artspace to release a limited-edition print entitled WaterSpirit washed Pelican, 2022. For those unfamiliar to her work, Mutu approaches image-making like an archaeologist, by mining found objects and art history in an attempt to probe questions of identity and representation, as well as ecology, politics and more. In the past, this process has translated into semi-mythological artwork that is charged with unorthodox materials, such as tea, synthetic hair, Kenyan soil, feathers and sand. “Working with older prints and found materials is a kind of archaeography,” said the artist in a statement, “a re-discovery and re-naming of an image. It’s my way to conjure up something from the past that can return to t...

Bart Simpson Plays Muse in Katherine Bernhardt’s Latest Exhibition

Katherine Bernhardt‘s work can be dizzying, fascinating, colorful and at-times non-sensical — all at the same time. Her subject matter, equally, has no boundaries — Crocs, Pikachu, mushrooms, ET and floating Swoosh’s. For her latest show, the St. Louis-based artist chooses to profile America’s favorite rebel, Bart Simpson. Housed at Canada gallery in New York, I’m Bart Simpson, who the hell are you? is understandably humorous on first glance, as many of the paintings depict Bart as he moons the viewer. Beyond the risqué scenes shown, however, Bernhardt opens an interesting dialogue into color and semiotics — blending high and low culture to comment on the many archetypes in American pop culture. Despite always getting into trouble, “Bart is a good guy,” wrote a release by the gallery, “loy...
