Quilo Is a New Magazine That Explores Contemporary Brazilian Photography and Writing
Quilo is a new magazine centered around contemporary photography and writing from Brazil. Founded by Mico Toledo, the book is elegantly designed by Porto Rocha and contains 300 pages of work from 38 contemporary photographers and six writers from Brazil, as well as work from several American, French and Spanish photographers. Toledo, who left Brazil 20 years ago to get his MFA at Central Saint Martins in London, always dreamt of going on a Kerouac-inspired road trip of his home country. Although that trip hasn’t happened yet, he created the magazine to showcase “stories and communities from different parts of Brazil through the eyes of different photographers,” Toledo told It’s Nice That. French Archaeologists Identified the Bodies of the Two Sarcophagi Found Beneath Notre Dame
Back in March, French archaeologists discovered several lead sarcophagi buried beneath the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. After months of examination, archaeological agency INRAP have determined that the bodies contained within belonged to a high priest and a knight. The research was conducted in partnership with the University of Toulouse, which carried out a series of x-ray scans from November 21 to 26. Protective gear was essential in the process to shield against the hazardous metals found within the lead of the sarcophagus — some of which burned in the atmosphere when the cathedral caught fire in 2019. Daniel Arsham Presents Crystal-Eroded Gas Pump Relic
Following a collaboration with Tiffany & Co. for a supersized bronze-eroded padlock, artist Daniel Arsham now shares his latest creation on Instagram, a monochrome vintage gas pump relic. Arsham revealed that he originally bought a vintage gas pump to create the work, but decided it was better to reconstruct the object digitally in 3D. Based on features from the original, Arsham was able to exaggerate the details by building out different textures and depth into the text, numbers, and imagery. Dispelling common misconceptions that he simply casts the objects or covers them, Arsham reveals that there is no way to physically capture a 2D print in monotone 3D form. An electronic music pioneer is putting his storied career to the page in an upcoming memoir. Former Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos has revealed The Sound of the Machine.
