Continuing his longstanding partnership with Pokémon, Daniel Arsham has revealed his latest sculpture from the fictional universe, creating a BRONZE CRYSTALIZED CHARIZARD sculpture reimagined as a relic of Kanto which has been uncovered through the passage of time. While Arsham has created eroded Charmander figures and PINK CRYSTALIZED CHARIZARD Pokémon cards in the past, the artist’s new cast bronze Charizard sculptures are hand-finished in custom black oil patina for the first time. Crystals are individually polished for a reflective glaze. “1-800 Happy Birthday” is a new exhibition that honors Black and Brown lives that were taken at the hands of police brutality. The project was created by Iranian-American artist, filmmaker and Even/Odd founder, Mohammad Gorjestani, in collaboration with curator Klaudia Ofwona Draber and art director Neil Hamamoto. While Henri Matisse is widely celebrated for his paper cutouts, his rival, Pablo Picasso, also had a seldom-known series of cut-paper artworks that spanned the entirety of his life. A new exhibition at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles is providing a rare glimpse into this practice. Organized by Cynthia Burlingham and Allegra Pesenti, with support from the Musée national Picasso–Paris, Picasso Cut Papers provides a comprehensive look at one of Picasso’s private studies that first started in 1890, at age nine, and would continue through the 1960s. A painting from Cy Twombly’s famous Bacchus series is expected to lead Phillips’ upcoming auction with an estimated price of $35 to 45m USD.
