If you’ve ever watched the film, You’ve Got Mail (or you’ve visited the Big Apple around this time of year before) you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about when I saw that New York in autumn is a whole vibe. If you haven’t, and you’re not familiar with the iconic opening montage of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks walking the Manhattan streets to a soundtrack of The Cranberries, you should probably stop reading and immediately watch it. The leaves turning orange in Central Park, the smell of the first cold morning, pumpkins on brownstone steps and a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils (just watch the film, okay?) But it’s really the New York autumn outfits we’re here to talk about today. After a sticky summer in the city, there’s something refreshing about autumn that brings the best out...

I’ve always wholeheartedly believed that I’m a summer person through and through. That is, however, until every autumn when I remember how much joy great knitwear and a new coat bring me. And while I’ll always be a sucker for the sunshine, I can’t help but have my head turned by all the cosy newness out there right now. It turns out, I’m actually a bit of a knitwear obsessive after all, a fact which has been cemented by the realisation that I currently own five monochrome striped knits, in slightly different variations, that I wear on rotation and love. And although I have quite a few sweaters, as I’ve got older, I now tend to always choose quality over quantity to ensure my knitwear lasts. This doesn’t mean they have to be super exp...

Because of this versatility, I now have a rainbow of colours in my eyeshadow collection. And while I experiment a lot, there are a few hues that I always come back to, all of which fall into the metallic, shimmery spectrum. And Adenuga agrees, with metallic browns and bronze colours being the shades she reaches for most in her kit bag when working with brown-eyed beauties. But if you fancy something different and want a fun, bright-eyed look both Adenuga and beauty guru Huda Kattan state that purples and blues are the standout shades. “Jewel-toned shadow shades like purple and blue are the absolute best undertones to bring out the best in brown eyes. They complement and enhance brown eyes beautifully!” says Kattan. All this info, and experience, means I f...

Now it’s pretty much November, temperatures are no doubt going to start plummeting. But the upside to this is that we get to wrap ourselves up in fabulous knitwear for the foreseeable. Brits have long relied on M&S for its excellent knitwear selection and this year, it’s better than ever, with plenty of beautiful jumpers and cardigans to choose from. M&S is particularly known for its cashmere crew-necks and roll-necks, and it’s added some amazing colours to its classic arsenal, including bright tangerine, ombre styles and hot pink. When it comes to classic knitwear styles, you really can’t beat a chunky cable-knit jumper. Or, if you’re looking for a statement piece, something slightly festive or just a simple jumper you can rely on every day,...
Caves were amongst some of humankind’s earliest dwellings, and some experts believe that with the acceleration of climate change, this form of shelter may become essential to our survival in the future. A new exhibition at The Noguchi Museum in Queens partially uses this premise to explore organic architectural projects from Mexico by Carlos Lazo, Mathias Goeritz, Juan O’Gorman, and Javier Senosiain, and how their work is relevant now more than ever. Occupying multiple galleries on the first floor of the institution, In Praise of Caves transforms the museum into a subterranean environment that metaphorically prompts visitors to meditate on our place in the world. From Goeritz’ monolithic sculptures to a model of the cave home that O’Gorman built for his family near Mexico City — each artis...
While art is open to a seemingly infinite set of interpretations, the actual positioning of any given work is less a topic of serious discourse. But one art historian has determined that Piet Mondrian’s New York City I (1941), which has exhibited at various institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, has been hung upside down over the past 75 years. The composition features a geometric grid of overlapping yellow, red and blue lines atop a raw canvas backdrop, where near the bottom, the lines begin to noticeably thicken — resembling an abstracted skyline. According to curator Susanne Meyer-Büser, who was conducting research on the artwork in lieu of a new exhibition on Mondrian at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen: K20 (where the painting has hung since 1975), t...

The Asia Art Center in Taipei, Taiwan is preparing to launch a monolithic exhibition of new works by the acclaimed Japanese artist, Meguru Yamaguchi. Entitled “The Underground Spiritual Blue,” the presentation will mark the artist’s largest solo exhibition to date. In “The Underground Spiritual Blue,” Meguru will showcase a series of freestanding sculptures with one of them measuring a towering, 2.8-meter-tall sculpture which is also the artist’s largest piece to date. Also included in the presentation is a series of sculptural paintings that feature the artist’s signature brushstrokes in vivid colors. The abstract paintings and sculptures in the show encourage viewers to go beyond conventional perception and tap into their imagination when observing these pieces. “Yamaguchi believes that ...
