Sam McKinniss is an American artist who taps into the throes of pop culture to create figurative compositions that explore romance, celebrity and tragedy. Many of you have likely seen much of the content he sources: Ellie Sattler in Jurassic Park, the Purple Rain album cover, to Lil Nas X wearing that unforgettable pink cowboy outfit to the Grammy’s. The Brooklyn-based artist is currently showcasing his third solo exhibition at Almine Rech’s Paris flagship. In Misery, McKinniss presents a suite of new paintings that lean into the familiarity of photos found across the media. By playing both artist and observer, McKinnis subtly imbues himself within each painting, by offering a snapshot at the images that have shaped him and contemporary culture. Novelist and critic Gary Indiana once wrote ...
For many artists, there is always a reference point. For Kim Jung Gi, there was only his intuition. World renowned for his ability to draw incredibly rendered scenes simply from memory, the legendary South Korean artist helped inject the same cool confidence in millions of aspiring artists who looked to do the same. Having recently finished his European tour, Kim was getting ready to board a flight from Paris to New York to appear in Comic Con, when suddenly, he experienced chest pains and was rushed to a local hospital. The prolific artist tragically passed away shortly after at age 47, due to a heart attack. Waves of tributes have poured in across publications and social media — from Jim Lee, publisher and chief creative officer of DC Comics, who lauded Kim as “one of the absolute greats...
& Other Stories has been an influencer favourite for quite some time. These days, it’s never a surprise when I scroll through Instagram and tap a photo only to learn the brand has been tagged, yet again, by someone whose style I admire. The beloved brand is responsible for creating elevated pieces you know will stand the test of time, from classic tailored pieces to easy accessories and pretty midi dresses to cosy knitwear. This month in particular, we’ve seen quite a few trending & Other Stories pieces on the feeds of some incredibly chic individuals, proving once again that Insta-worthy style can be completely attainable. From our very own Maxine Eggenberger‘s dream autumn blazer to the perfect jeans for petite&n...
In my experience, you’re either a shoe person or a handbag person. Perhaps you have the budget and closet space for both (congrats!), but if you fall into the latter category of seasoned bag pro, then it’s highly likely that you’ll be one of two types of collectors: You’ll enjoy either indulging in the fun, It bag of the moment or investing in timeless classics. Rarely do the two meet, and the opposing camps that divide this world of leather-goods connoisseurs provide inspiration for those who like seasonal switch-ups as well as the shoppers with a longer-term strategy in mind. This dynamic has played out across the fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris. I’ve witnessed many a classic come back to the fo...
That’s not to say that everything I buy is an investment—at least, not in terms of cost. I love the high street, and in Britain, we have access to some of the best affordable brands in the world. Although I shop from it, I do so mindfully. And I apply that same mentality to any high-end purchases I’m considering. In the past, I’ve been swayed into purchasing on name alone, but in my tenure at Who What Wear, I’ve developed a thicker skin for designer pieces, which allows me to look past the gilded embossing and instead see the piece for what it is and determine whether it’s actually worth it. As you can see, I’m very particular about the clothes I wear, the story they tell, and the impact they have on my life. So why not share my shopping picks with you? ...
There’s no feeling quite like falling head over heels for an item you’ve spotted on a celebrity or influencer only to find said item and realise it’s got a hefty price tag attached. I can’t splurge on designer items often (or ever) and instead favour a trusty few high-street brands that are worthy of my investment and vintage or second-hand shops. So when A-list fashion folks champion an affordable design and give it their longed-for stamp of approval, I feel all kinds of excitement. This time around, celebrities such as Kendall Jenner and Olivia Wilde (maybe you’ve heard of them?) are embracing an already-established design: Adidas Gazelle trainers. At around the £75 mark, they sit at the lower end of the trainer spectrum pr...
About six years after the initial announcement, Tesla is finally ready to deliver its first batch of the Semi Truck. The long-awaited plans have finally been put into place and founder and CEO Elon Musk has taken to his favorite social media platform to confirm that production has begun. The Tesla Semi Truck, which was first announced in November 2017, is slated to make its first delivery to soft drink company Pepsi in December this year. With its new electric transport vehicle, Musk promises that the Semi will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just 20 seconds when it is “fully loaded.” The tech mogul also claims that the truck will be able to reach “highway-level speeds even up steep grades.” When it comes to charging, drivers will be able to recharge the tr...

Wind rushes through your hair as you and the elements become one. The feeling of McLaren’s most powerful engine to date — 812 HP — bolted to your back enhances in its intensity through the rev range, heightening senses you’ve never tapped into before. Stones, rain and insects are forced over your head by the power of aerodynamics. Onlookers think you’re mad. This is the McLaren Elva effect. As one of the contemporary Holy Trinity of always-topless hypercars (sitting alongside the Ferrari Monza SP1/2 and the Aston Martin Speedster), the Elva isn’t your everyday super-fast driving machine. In fact, it’s nowhere near anything you have — or Hypebeast had — experienced before. From the moment we opened the Elva’s dihedral doors we knew we were in for something special; now it’s time to try to ...
Considering he’s yet to even reach his 30s, Tyler Mitchell has gathered quite an impressive list of institutions and galleries to have shown at, and titles he’s shot for. Now, the artist is presenting a body of new works with London’s Gagosian Davies Street location, titled “Chrysalis”. Inside the exhibition, a series of photographs and videos are on show, each exploring a “utopian vision of Black beauty, desire, and belonging.” Across a period of time earlier this year, Mitchell shot on location in upstate New York, and in studios in New York and London. Throughout the body of work, he was specifically looking to capture images of Black men and women in states of safety and relaxation, often against a natural backdrop – created either artificially or taken in-situ. “Collectively, these mo...
Many of us use autumn as a time for a wardrobe reset and to revisit the classics, such as a muted colour palette and back-to-school basics. In this way, celebrities are just like us, as we’ve noticed many stars leaning on a classic capsule, wearing boots, simple cashmere and blazers. Tracee Ellis Ross showed that monochrome looks can have a big impact when paired with bold shoes, and Victoria Beckham seems to agree. Amal Clooney took two wardrobe staples and added some glitz to create a sleek evening look that couldn’t be easier to replicate. You’ll see just how versatile a classic black blazer can be with different stylings from Katie Holmes, Amal Clooney and Kate Moss. Keep scrolling to see and shop their basic autumn outfits.
