Nina Chanel Abney Highlights the Black Fishing Community at Henry Art Gallery

Acclaimed American artist Nina Chanel Abney unveiled a new solo exhibition at the University of Washington’s Henry Art Gallery. Located at the institution’s Seattle campus, Fishing Was His Life presents a series of prints and paintings inspired by the culture and commerce of fishing within the African American community. Hidden beneath her deceptively simple geometric planes, Abney explores themes pertaining identity, politics, race and sexuality, particularly within coastal fisheries and the structural inequities that threaten Black livelihoods within the industry. The exhibition marks the culmination of Abney’s 2020 Gordon Parks Foundation Fellowship. The artist commented further: “After seeing Gordon Parks’s 1943-44 series documenting the fishing industry along the Atlantic coast, I imm...

Jen Stark Enters the World of Stained Glass in ‘Dichroic Mandala’

Enchanting lightboxes, parking lot murals, immersive projections — the next stop in Jen Stark’s hypnotic practice is the world of stained glass. Made in conjunction with Avant Arte, Dichroic Mandala is Stark’s first glass edition and continues on her exploration into optical seduction and perceptual engagement. The hanging sculpture was inspired by geometry, natural forms and mandalas and created with alternating sheets of dichroic and colored glass. Even when static, the artwork creates an allusion of movement that pulsates in broad daylight, as in darkness. To make efficient use of materials, the sequence of colors will vary from piece to piece — garnering each sculpture unique. Dichroic Mandala is an edition of 50 and will be available to purchase for $2,691 USD on October 26 at 9am ET ...

Night Gallery Presents ‘The Heavy Light Show’

Night Gallery is currently showcasing a new group exhibition featuring the work of Sarah Braman, Carla Edwards, Olivia Erlanger, Laurie Kang, Anne Libby, Connor Marie, MPA, Eli Ping, and Davina Semo. Although each artist presents conceptually different approaches to sculpture and installation, their work is united through a silent collaborator — natural light. Throughout each hour of the day, works in The Heavy Light Show will change according to the sun. Suspended above the gallery’s open floor plan, Carla Edwards created a near replica of the windows of South Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. The five gray casts hold tiny slivers of colored glass, which according to the gradations of light, invoke the psychological violence of incarceration. Further along the space, light takes o...

One Perfect Arket Blazer Worn 5 Ways for Autumn

The blazer as a wardrobe staple has well and truly passed trend status and become a full-fledged capsule hero piece. I now have upwards of eight in my collection (how many is too many?), and I’d go so far as to say they are the hardest-working items in my closet, so much so that I can’t remember what I wore before blazers were a thing. Answers on a postcard, please. This specific Arket style comes in a few colourways from classics to bold brights, and more often than not, it’s sold out in a lot of them. I actually own both the camel and the black because I’m a big believer in investing when you find an item you love and wear time and time again. I probably wear mine most often with jeans and a white T-shirt, switching in heels, loafers or boots depending on the event. But to showcase ...

Birkin Bags Are More Valuable Than Ever—Here’s How to Get Your Hands on One

Indeed, it seems that a Birkin’s worth just keeps going up. Baghunter shared that between June 2016 and 2017, the value of Birkins on the resale market rose by 16%. Since then, Baghunter has conducted a new report, which found a growing gap between demand and supply of Birkin handbags, leading to a “mini Hermès drought” in the resale market. “With all indicators showing Hermès has not increased production of the Birkin bag, the value of the Birkin is set to spike soon,” said Evelyn Fox, co-founder of Baghunter.  We’re no expert on investments, but we’d say the Birkin sounds like a pretty sure bet. This begs the question: Stock market or bag connoisseur? We’ll take the bags, thanks. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you ...

Hailey Bieber Just Settled the Debate on Which Shoe Style to Wear With Flares

Hailey Bieber was in Paris earlier this week which means one thing: lots of good autumn outfit inspiration. She definitely delivered this time, especially with an all-black look that touched on multiple trends. Bieber wore a leather Harrington-style jacket over a black turtleneck but it’s her bottom half that really inspired us to to share this look. Bieber paired the jacket and turtleneck with a special pair of skinny flare-cargo hybrid pants (that further prove that flares are back, in case you had any doubts). And if you find yourself conflicted about which shoe style to wear with them, just let Bieber’s feet be your guide. She wore a pair of pointy-toed boots (Balenciaga Cagole Boots, to be exact), displaying that they’re truly the perfect sho...

Daniel Arsham’s Giant Bronze Sculptures are Being Installed in Yorkshire

Six huge bronze sculptures by Daniel Arsham are currently being installed on the grounds of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, in the north of England. The works, collectively titled “Relics in the Landscape”, are intended to work in dialogue with the vast, green surroundings of the park, which has been uninhabited for centuries. Marking the first museum show of Arsham’s work to take place in the UK, the pieces are typical of his aesthetic. Each of the bronze sculptures will be shown outdoors in the 18th-century Formal Garden – ranging from the “Bronze Extraterrestrial Bicycle” to the three-meter tall Bronze Eroded Venus of Arles. In terms of his inspiration, Arsham once again looked to his childhood experience of surviving Hurricane Andrew in 1992. As a result of the storm, his family home was...

New York Mandates Zero-Emissions Vehicles Beginning 2035

Echoing the commitments made by California, Governor Kathy Hochul announced ahead of the weekend that New York will be requiring all “passenger cars, pickup trucks and SUVs” sold in the state beginning in 2035 to be zero-emissions models. In 1970, Congress passed the Clean Air Act, allowing California to set its own emissions laws due to the worrying levels of air pollution at the time. According to The Hill, the Act prohibits states from implementing their own standard, and only after California applies for a waiver can other states follow. Ahead of the ban on gas-powered car sales, Hochul has announced a series of initiatives including having 35 percent of new cars be zero-emissions by 2026 and 68 percent by 2030. A small controllable act that will help reach those benchmark ...
