Jenny Holzer Examines ‘DEMENTED WORDS’ at Hauser & Wirth

Wordplay has been a hallmark of Jenny Holzer’s career since the 1970s. From painting to prints, installations to sculpture, the American artist uses text to reflect on themes pertaining to personal experience, power systems, corruption and idealism. Following a massive series of installations at the Rockefeller Center, Holzer is showcasing another New York exhibition not far away at Hauser & Wirth’s 22nd Street location. DEMENTED WORDS presents an interesting dialogue between the age of antiquity and the socio-economic turbulence of the present day. Highlights include a swinging electronic sign, WTF (2022), which dislays a rotating series of tweets by Donald Trump during his presidency and posts by Q, leader of the QAnon conspiracy. The unpredictable cadence of the installation is mean...

Every once in a while one of our favourite high street brands comes along and treats us to an amazing sale. We know to look out for these at the end of every season, but a mid-season sale is even more of a treat, with the possibility of nabbing some pieces we’ve added to our wish list recently for a lower price.  Often those pieces that end up in the sale are fairly trend-led which have been left over at the end of a season, meaning that it often requires a hefty bit of work in order to find the discounted gems that are worth snapping up. However, today that’s not the case. Enter COS, who has spoiled shoppers with an up to 50%-off mid season sale full of a plethora of classic buys that will work hard in your wardrobe year-round.  You Deserve to Make Mon...

A Style Expert Shares the Only 8 Pieces on Her Autumn Wish List

Going into the new season, I wanted all the goss on which pieces she has her eyes on for autumn—knowing full well I’d probably add them straight onto my own wish list too, as well as her top tips for creating the most hard-working autumn/winter wardrobe. “My go-to must-haves are a trench coat, black penny loafers and a sturdy umbrella!” She told me. “I try to be more sustainable by mostly wearing what I already own, but there are a few new AW22 trends I’ve got my eye on, like the return of corduroy and velvet in more sophisticated forms—think waistcoats and wide-leg trousers. I’ll also be trying out XL silhouettes which I always think is an easy way to make classics look fresh.” As for outfit ideas to wear right now, Bathgate says, “I fi...

I’m a Fashion Expert—Here Are 30 Elevated Pieces Worth Buying This Autumn

Then there’s the capsule wardrobe pieces that really come into their own in autumn. Blazers, knits, jeans, trench coats, boots… These are buys you can wear at any age and carry through to most other seasons as well. So it’s often in autumn that I end up investing the most in key buys because I have faith that it’s for something versatile and totally worth it.  This year, I’m especially taken by all the gorgeous camel coats around. It’s a classic I don’t yet own that has been on my wish list for a long time, and Totême’s version (pictured above) just might have me taking the plunge. If it’s not that, then it will certainly be Arket’s long down puffer coat, which is back after selling out three years in a row and still holds the crown as the chicest practical coat on the market.  R...

I’m a Beauty Editor—5 New Eye Makeup Looks I’m Trying This Autumn

Every season, there’s a popular makeup trend that spreads like wildfire. (Remember the siren eye and the über-glossy lips that boomed over the summer?) Well, thanks to my many hours of research, I can report that this autumn is officially the season of eye makeup. From the runway at Milan Fashion Week—we couldn’t take our eyes off the mesmerising purple look at Versace created by the makeup queen that is Pat McGrath—to our TV screens (read: Euphoria), eye makeup is taking over. So what’s it all about? This trend centres on creating a bold, electric and fun eye look. Think vibrant, bold colours, dazzling gems and elaborate, dynamic lines. There are no limits. Makeup is a world of make believe, and what better way to get imaginative than going all out on eye makeup for th...

Pace Founder Unveils New Gallery in New York’s Tribeca Neighborhood

Arne Glimcher, founder and chairman of Pace Gallery, unveiled a new project space dubbed 125 Newbury. The new location is named after the address of the original gallery Glimcher opened in Boston in 1960 and will occupy a 3,900 square-foot ground floor space with 17-foot ceilings in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood. Every year, 125 Newbury will host five exhibitions focusing on both thematic group shows as well solo exhibitions from prominent and emerging artists. The inaugural show, Wild Strawberries, presents disparate disciplines that are united through art’s ability to evoke pleasure and horror simultaneously. From painting and film, to sculpture, installation and photography, Wild Strawberries presents this duality of thought though work by artists Julie Curtiss, David Hammons, Shehrya...

Josh Sperling Presents ‘My Pleasure’ at Sorry We’re Closed

Windy, vibrant and no matter how many times you’ve seen it, always unpredictable — the work of Josh Sperling is a pleasure to witness. It’s fitting then, that his latest solo exhibition is titled My Pleasure. Housed at Sorry We’re Closed in Brussels, the American artist invites viewers to wander through a labyrinth of new wall artworks. Made using plywood and stretched canvas, each of Sperling’s three-dimensional pieces blur the lines between painting and sculpture and are as much a study into color, as in form. Sperling’s visual lexicon harks back to the Minimalist paintings of the 1960s and ‘70s, particularly the work of Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly. He takes this inspiration and mixes it with his own background in furniture and graphic design to create energetic wall pieces that are...

Shen the T. Rex Is Set to Hit Christie’s Auction

If you’ve ever wanted to own a real life Tyrannosaurus rex fossil, now’s your chance. This November, Christie’s Hong Kong will auction the skeleton of Shen, a dinosaur who roamed the Earth nearly 68 million years ago. Shen, meaning ‘God-Like’ in Chinese, was named to reflect its colossal size at 43-feet-long, 16-feet tall, and weighing in at over 3,000-pounds. The name also follows the trend in ’S’ named T-Rex’, such as Stan, which was auctioned by Christie’s New York in 2020 for $31.8m USD, and Sue, which was auctioned by Sotheby’s in 1997 for $8.3m USD. “T. Rex are incredibly rare,” said Dr. John R. Nudds of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester. “Just one in 80 million T. Rex dinosaurs were preserved as a fossil. Only two have ever sold at au...
