Twitter expands downvote test worldwide

If you’ve seen the option to downvote replies on Twitter, you’re not alone. The experimental feature, which Twitter started testing last year, is now being shown to a global audience, says the company. The option to downvote was initially given to a select group of web users, but Twitter says it will soon be expanding the feature to iOS and Android users as well. Unlike on sites like Reddit, total tallies for upvotes and downvotes aren’t public, but are being used by Twitter behind the scenes to tweak what replies it shows users. Twitter’s downvote tallies are private The company said results of the experiment so far found that users downvoted replies they found offensive or irrelevant. “This experiment also revealed that downvoting is the most frequently used way for people to flag conten...

Pixel 6’s magic eraser feature breaks after update

The Google Pixel 6’s magic eraser feature, which lets you remove unwanted people or objects from your photos, appears to have been broken by a recent update, PhoneArena reports. Multiple users across Reddit and Twitter are reporting that attempting to use it causes the Google Photos app to crash, leaving them unable to use a feature that’s been heavily marketed in the promotion of Google’s latest flagship smartphone. The issue is the latest in a series of bugs to have hit the Pixel 6. Back in December, Google was forced to halt the rollout of an update after owners complained that it was causing network connection problems for their devices. Android 12 has been an unusually rocky update for many devices, but Google’s Pixel lineup seems to have been especially hard hit. This isn’t even the ...

Rotterdam Will Take Apart a Historic Bridge to Allow Jeff Bezos’ Megayacht to Sail Through

A historic bridge in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, is about to be temporarily dismantled to allow Jeff Bezos‘ new megayacht to sail through. As The Washington Post reports, the billionaire has employed Dutch company Oceano to build a new $500 million USD, 417-foot megayacht that’s due to hit the seas this summer, but to do so it would first have to sail through Rotterdam. Unfortunately, the Koningshaven Bridge — known locally as De Hef — is currently in the way. The steel railway bridge was originally constructed in 1927 and was the first of its kind in Western Europe, featuring a middle section that can be raised for ships to then pass underneath. After escaping demolition in 1994, De Hef underwent a major restoration between 2014 to 2017, after which the city said it would never disma...

The International Space Station Will Crash Into the Pacific Ocean in Early 2031

After learning that the U.S. will extend its International Space Station Commitments until 2030, news has just arrived on what will happen to the ISS after those commitments. Now leaving space station initiatives to the private sector, NASA plans on decommissioning the ISS by safely crashing the 356-foot-long structure into the Pacific Ocean (Point Nemo) in early 2031. This area is home to a number of other decommissioned space vessels and was given the nickname “Spacecraft Cemetery.” The ISS was first initiated with the Zarya Control Module in 1998, but it wasn’t until the year 2000 when the ISS’ story officially commenced with Expedition 1 and long-term crew occupancy. This symbol of unity and international collaboration for research was the result of the effort from 15 different countri...

Coinbase Will Give You Your Tax Refunds in Cryptocurrency

Crypto fans in the U.S. will soon be able to receive their tax refunds in cryptocurrency. Thanks to a new partnership between TurboTax and Coinbase, those who file their taxes using the former’s service will be eligible to deposit tax refunds owed to you directly as various cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ethereum into a wallet on the latter’s exchange platform. The collaborative project also launched a free tax center for crypto owners who now have to report their earnings to the Inland Revenue Service, which recently began monitoring digital currencies. While simply owning various coins won’t trigger obligations to pay taxes, the IRS will bill you for cryptocurrencies you sell or stake. Taxes taken from trading profits will then be calculated based on how long you’ve held onto the...

An Amazon employee by the name of Douglas Wright is now facing up to 20 years in prison after stealing computer components from the company’s warehouse. According to a report from the Department of Justice in the Western District of North Carolina, the former operations manager pleaded guilty to mail fraud over stealing a whole range of computer components, including “internal hard drives, processors, and graphic processing units” after his criminal activity was discovered by the FBI and the United States Postal Inspection Service. Blizzard is planning a new Warcraft mobile game

Nestled in today’s Activision Blizzard’s quarterly earnings report (which was curiously delivered as a press release and not a traditional call ostensibly because of its pending acquisition by Microsoft and possibly the myriad other things going on over there) is the news Blizzard is working on a new Warcraft mobile title slated for a 2022 release. According to the press release, “Blizzard is planning substantial new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022, including […] getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players’ hands for the first time.” The press release doesn’t go into detail about the new game or when we can expect to hear more. For now, all we know is that it’s Warcraft, and it’ll be mobile. The news coincides neatly with the earnings report also revealing consume...

Ghostwire: Tokyo looks incredibly creepy in lengthy new gameplay trailer

Sony’s latest showcase event was dedicated exclusively to Ghostwire: Tokyo with an in-depth gameplay trailer — and the game sure does look creepy. The paranormal action game from Tango Gameworks, the studio behind the Evil Within series, takes place in a modern version of Tokyo full of folklore creatures. It’s described as a “reimagining” of the Japanese metropolis, just, you know, with supernatural creatures lurking around. The gameplay trailer is nearly 10 minutes long (it’s followed by an inside look at development), making it the best look we’ve had at the game so far, and it’s full of terrifying creatures and slick first-person action. It also provides a bit more detail on Ghostwire’s story, which takes place after a mystery event causes most of the city’s population to vanish and inv...

Snapchat and Facebook agree that the future of social media looks like TikTok

Snapchat invented the Stories format of sharing pictures and videos that disappear. Now the company is indicating, along with Facebook, that the future of social media looks more like TikTok. In remarks to investors for its quarterly earnings report on Thursday, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said that less time is being spent watching Stories from friends in the app, even though the company had hoped Stories engagement would pick up as pandemic lockdowns eased and people started leaving their houses more. Instead, Snapchat users are increasingly flocking to watch videos on Spotlight, Snapchat’s TikTok rival for viewing viral videos posted by random creators, and its Discover section for premium shows. “This is a continuation of the trend we have observed throughout the pandemic, and friend story p...
