Here’s how Google’s experimental 3D telepresence booth works

In a new research paper, Google has detailed the tech behind its impressive Project Starline demo from this year’s I/O conference. Project Starline is essentially a 3D video chat booth that aims to replace a one-on-one 2D video conference call with an experience that feels like you’re actually sitting in front of a real human being. It sounds simple, but Google’s research paper highlights just how many challenges there are in tricking your brain into thinking there’s a real human being sitting just a few feet away from you. Obviously the image needs to be high resolution and free of distracting artifacts, but it also needs to look correct from your relative position in the booth. Audio is another challenge, as the system needs to make it sound like a person’s words are coming from their ac...

Microsoft’s new Windows prompts try to stop people downloading Chrome

Microsoft has never been a fan of Windows users downloading Chrome instead of using Edge, but the company has now stepped up its campaign to keep people using its built-in browser. Windows 10 and Windows 11 have both started displaying new prompts when people navigate to the Chrome download page, in an effort to discourage people from installing Google’s rival browser. These new prompts, spotted by Neowin, include messages like: “Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with the added trust of Microsoft.” “That browser is so 2008! Do you know what’s new? Microsoft Edge.” “‘I hate saving money,’ said no one ever. Microsoft Edge is the best browser for online shopping.” We’ve been able to confirm at least one prompt on a Windows 11 PC, and it appears these new prompts are also a...

For all of these, availability will depend on your local supply. And if you already have a next-gen console (or don’t need one to play last-gen games) the page for Microsoft’s novelty $99.9...

Christie’s is Auctioning Two Artifacts From ‘The Birth of Wikipedia’

Christie’s has announced an online sale titled The Birth of Wikipedia, containing two items from Jimmy Wales, the founder of the online non-profit encyclopedia that “has become the largest and most-read reference work in history.” The purpose of this sale is to help support Wales’ alternative social media network project dubbed WT.Social, which aims to create a healthier alternative to existing social platforms with a donation-only and advertising-free model. The first lot in the upcoming auction is Wales’ Strawberry Apple iMac which was used to create the website in January of 2001. In the site’s early development, Wales personally monitored the site, guarding against potential vandals while watching the site take off. As the computer became obsolete, Wales stored it away in its original ...

Amazon Alexa can now respond to running water and bleeping appliances

Amazon has expanded sound detection for routines, as well as made Alexa’s prescription refill skill available to Amazon Pharmacy customers. The company described the changes in its Alexa monthly roundup for November, which also includes mentions the US rollout of Conversation Mode, and that the wall-mountable Echo Show 15 will start shipping next week. Amazon first announced its plans to support custom sounds at its fall event back in September, but it doesn’t look like you’re able to program custom sounds just yet — Amazon has simply added two new sounds you can tell Alexa to recognize. With the new update, the device can listen out for the sounds of water running and appliances beeping. If you want Alexa to detect the chime of your dryer, for example, you can set up a routine for Alexa t...

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 is its latest attempt to hit a Windows on Arm home run

Qualcomm has announced its latest flagship chip for PCs: the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, which, as the name implies, succeeds last year’s 8cx Gen 2 model and offers some substantial jumps in performance. The 8cx Gen 3 is the first chip for Windows computers built on a 5nm process and promises up to 85 percent better CPU performance and up to 60 percent faster GPU performance compared to the 8cx Gen 2. Additionally, Qualcomm boasts that its new chip offers “60 percent greater performance per watt over the competitive x86 platform” — although the company is notably quiet on which x86 platform its comparing things to. Qualcomm also touts that the chip supports “multi-day battery life,” although again, it didn’t provide too many details. As one might expect for a major Qualcomm laptop chip, a major ...

Qualcomm’s new G3x platform could usher in a new wave of Nintendo Switch-alikes

Qualcomm is upping its investment in gaming with a new Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Gaming Platform, which manufacturers can use to make Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck-like handheld gaming devices. It also supports sub-6Hz 5G, mmWave 5G, and Wi-Fi 6E for speedy networking. If you want to connect G3x-powered devices to other screens, the chip supports output to a 4K display or tethering to a mixed reality headset over a USB-C port. The G3x also includes the company’s Snapdr...

Federal court blocks Texas law banning ‘viewpoint discrimination’ on social media

A federal judge has blocked a Texas law that aimed to limit large social platforms’ ability to moderate content on the grounds that it is likely to violate the First Amendment. The order, issued by a federal district court in Austin on Wednesday night, granted an injunction proposed by NetChoice and the CCIA that puts the HB 20 law on hold until the conclusion of the case. “HB 20’s prohibitions on ‘censorship’ and constraints on how social media platforms disseminate content violate the First Amendment,” determined Judge Robert Pitman in the decision. “Content moderation and curation will benefit users and the public by reducing harmful content and providing a safe, useful service,” Pitman said, explaining why the injunction was beneficial. “Private companies that use editorial judgment to...

Apple may have a problem with iPhone demand as well as supply

Apple is indicating to its iPhone 13 component suppliers that it may not order as many units as expected due to a drop in demand, according to a report in Bloomberg. While the company had already cut orders for the year to 80 million — down from a target of 90 million — it was reportedly planning to make up for much of the drop next year. Now, though, Apple is said to have told manufacturing partners that this may not happen and they might not see the expected boost in orders. Like almost every other technology company, Apple has been dealing with supply issues brought on by the global semiconductor shortage. CEO Tim Cook said the company’s last quarterly earnings took an estimated $6 billion hit due to the shortage as well as the impact of COVID-19 on manufacturing in Southeast Asia, and ...
