Surprise! Deltarune Chapter 2 drops September 17th

The next chapter of Deltarune is coming and I am beyond excited. In a surprise announcement, Toby Fox, creator of the Undertale series, revealed Deltarune Chapter 2 will be released on Mac and PC on September 17th. The news came on September 15th during a livestream of Deltarune Chapter 1 put on to commemorate Undertale’s sixth anniversary. Hosted by three dads from Fangamer — a gaming merchandise retailer — the Deltarune livestream featured hideous dad-approved shirts, canned laughter typical of a ‘90s sitcom, and commentary from Toby Fox himself via a skateboarding Annoying Dog proxy with a text-to-speech voice. You can (and should) check out a VOD of the wholesome stream here. [embedded content] Deltarune is the much anticipated follow-up to Toby Fox’s award-winning indie RPG Undertale....

Electric scooter startup Gogoro is going public

Gogoro is the latest EV company to jump on the trend of going public by merging with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. The Taiwanese e-scooter and battery-swapping tech startup announced Thursday that it will combine with a SPAC called Poema Global Holdings, which is listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. The deal — which is expected to close in the first quarter of 2022 — will net Gogoro around $550 million, and will value the startup at more than $2.3 billion. It’s a huge step for the scooter company, which has been rapidly expanding this year. In April, Gogoro announced a partnership with the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world to bring its electric scooter and battery tech to India. That was Gogoro’s most major push outside of Taiwan to date — until May, when it a...

WhatsApp begins testing a yellow pages-style business directory

WhatsApp is piloting a new business directory in São Paulo, Brazil that lets users find local shops and services with a presence on the app, the service’s head Will Cathcart has announced. Screenshots show how WhatsApp will show businesses sorted by categories like “grocery store” and “restaurant,” before letting users chat directly with them. Reuters reports that the test will include thousands of businesses in the city. Although the Facebook-owned messaging service is most famous as a person-to-person messaging service, e-commerce has become an increasingly important part of its offering in recent years. As of last October, WhatsApp reported that over 175 million people globally used the service to message a WhatsApp business account every day. I’m excited we’re starting to pilot a...

Make iPhone 13 preorders a one-step process on Friday by following these steps

If you’re planning on preordering one of Apple’s new iPhone 13 models at 8AM ET on Friday, September 17th, you might be interested to know that US customers can pre-register their details to make the checkout process a little easier. Now, before you say anything, I completely agree that the idea of pre-registering for a preorder sounds ridiculous. But if you’re someone who wants to complete the preorder as quickly as possible to guarantee an early ship date during a time of global component shortages, it’s a useful trick to know. Just be aware that this process is only available until midnight on Thursday, Eastern Time. This isn’t the first time Apple has offered pre-registration. But previously this route appears to have been reserved for customers on the iPhone Upgrade Program, MacRumors...

The Lucid Air is the first electric car with a 520-mile EPA-rated range

Lucid Motors’ Air Dream Edition has received an Environmental Protection Agency-rated range of 520 miles, making it the longest-range EV ever rated by the agency. The EPA rating certifies Lucid’s claim from over a year ago that its forthcoming electric sedan would be the longest range production EV on the market. It also represents a victory for Lucid Motors CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson, who led development of the Model S when he worked at Tesla and has said that the Air will outmatch Elon Musk’s company in terms of range, luxury, acceleration, and price. The Air Dream Edition bests the longest-range Tesla, the Model S Long Range Plus, by over 100 miles. But that added range will come at a cost, with the Dream Edition with 19-inch wheels starting at $169,000. If that sticker price is too sp...

Apple Watch Keyboard App Developer FlickType Suing Tech Giant Over Plagiarism

The team behind the FlickType app is now planning on a lawsuit against Apple over the new QWERTY keyboard feature on the upcoming Apple Watch Series 7. Following the unveiling of the next generation of Apple Watches, one of the new features to hit the platform is a built-in keyboard program that users can tap to reply to various messages or emails. Noting that its function and design are extremely similar to a previous app called FlickType, a Twitter user tagged the app development team and its founder Kosta Eleftheriou letting them know. In response, Eleftheriou tweeted an older statement from Apple revealing that FlickType had been removed from the App Store for being in contravention of its review guidelines. The reason stated was simply that “the app is a keyboard for the Apple Watch,”...

Instagram Recognizes Its Direct Effects on Teen Girls in Company Report

For the past three years, Facebook has conducted internal studies to examine the direct effects of Instagram on its younger user base, namely teenage girls. The report has repeatedly found that Instagram continuously adds to the toxic body image issued amongst teenage girls. Wall Street Journal reports that an internal Facebook presentation indicated that, “32% of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse.” Facebook has ultimately confirmed that a large percentage of teenagers have been negatively affected by Instagram. The Instagram Explore page seems to contribute to the issue as it is supposed to curate posts from a broad range of accounts for each specific user. Over the past few years, Facebook has struggled to hone in on the issue. To ...

Alphabet’s Project Taara laser tech beamed 700TB of data across nearly 5km

In January, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, shut down Project Loon, an initiative exploring using stratospheric helium balloons to distribute wireless internet (an attempt to use solar-powered drones folded in 2017). However, some technology developed as a part of the Loon project remained in development, specifically the Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC) links that were originally meant to connect the high flying balloons — and now that technology is actively in use providing a high-speed broadband link for people in Africa. Sort of like fiber optic cables without the cable, FSOC can create a 20Gbps+ broadband link from two points that have a clear line of sight, and Alphabet’s moonshot lab X has built up Project Taara to give it a shot. They started by setting up links in India...

$1.5 Billion USD NFT Platform OpenSea Admits to Insider Trading

Rumors that insider trading has occurred in the $1.5 billion USD NFT platform start-up OpenSea are confirmed to be true. OpenSea took to their company blog post to make the announcement stating that they had only recently learned of the issue. The company wrote, “Yesterday we learned that one of our employees purchased items that they knew were set to display on our front page before they appeared there publicly.” Though the specific employee was not identified, the OpenSea’s own head of product, Nate Chastain, was recently accused on Twitter of having secret crypto wallets. The Twitter user ZuwuTV has been able to trace some of the transaction receipts through the public blockchain which has supposedly shown that Chastian would buy a particular NFT before OpenSea would feature it on its f...

Battlefield 2042 delayed by nearly a month

Battlefield 2042, Dice’s upcoming entry in the Battlefield series, has been delayed by nearly a month, Dice parent company EA announced Wednesday. The game’s release date has been pushed from October 22nd to November 19th. “Building the next generation of Battlefield during a global pandemic has created unforeseen challenges for our development teams,” Oskar Gabrielson, studio GM at Dice said in a statement on behalf of the Battlefield 2042 team. “Given the scale and scope of the game, we had hoped our teams would be back in our studios together as we move towards launch. With the ongoing conditions not allowing that to happen safely, and with all the hard work the teams are doing from home, we feel it is important to take the extra time to deliver on the vision of Battlefield 2042 for our...

T-Mobile execs miss the Galaxy Note as much as you do

In the shadow of the iPhone 13, and an aggressive new “Forever Upgrade” plan to sell them, T-Mobile executives are complaining about Samsung’s phones, Fierce Wireless reports. Specifically, the lack of them. “Samsung has really fallen behind the eight ball relative to other OEMs on the global supply chain issue,” T-Mobile chief financial officer and executive vice president Peter Osvaldik said at a BofA Securities investor event on Tuesday. The issue seems to be that a majority of T-Mobile’s customers are “very significant Samsung lovers,” according to Osvaldik, so Samsung “discontinuing” the Galaxy Note — which “customers just loved” — combined with a shorter supply of S-series phones had a negative impact on the carrier. T-Mobile customers apparently love the Galaxy Note Despite what Osv...
