Talk about a long goodbye! Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine says the metal band’s upcoming farewell tour will “easily” last up to five years.
Earlier this year, the legendary thrash act announced it would release one final album and embark on a farewell outing. While that album, a self-titled effort, is set for release on January 23rd, the tour may last for half a decade.
Mustaine told Kerrang!, “We’re easily talking about touring for another three to five years.” The thrash legend, who recently turned 64, then figured that the tour may end right around the time he turns 70.

“And if we’re going to be doing it for that long then, shit, I’ll be looking at the birthday I don’t even want to think about,” he added.
The singer-guitarist went on to say, “I’m not caught up in longevity and stuff like that, and being one of those guys who can play until he’s in his 80s. I have to remember that people live and they die. And I need to take good care of myself.”
Mustaine also addressed his decision to record a new version of Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning” for the upcoming Megadeth album. The veteran musician co-wrote the song when he was still a member of Metallica, and insists it’s not fair to call it a “cover.”
“I wrote the song, too,” reasoned Mustaine. “I think other people will say that, but if you’re asking me, I don’t think it’s a cover song.”
As of now, Megadeth will launch their farewell tour with a Spring 2026 Latin American outing, followed by a European festival run in June, and a month-long stint supporting Iron Maiden’s North American tour beginning in late August. Pick up tickets here.
