
Eric Dane, who charmed audiences as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and played Jacob Elordi’s father on Euphoria, has died at the age of 53 following a battle with ALS.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” shared a statement released by his family Thursday. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
Dane announced his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in April 2025 after first experiencing symptoms in early 2024. He continued working as recently as last fall, appearing in an episode of NBC’s Brilliant Minds as a firefighter living with ALS.

After small guest roles on Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, and Married… with Children, Dane made his first real mark with a two-season run as Jason Dean on the fantasy drama Charmed.
Dane turned a guest spot on the second season of the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy into his definitive role, as his his character Dr. Mark Sloan was turned into a series regular by the time season three rolled around. Dane remained an integral part of the show through the early part of season nine.
His other notable roles included as Cal Jacobs, the father of Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs, on HBO’s Euphoria, and on the TNT series The Last Ship.
