Hugh Jackman on Playing Wolverine: “I Am Never Saying ‘Never’ Ever Again”

Summary

  • Hugh Jackman stated he will “never say never again” regarding playing Wolverine
  • This follows his return to the role in Deadpool and Wolverine, breaking his 2017 retirement
  • His open-ended answer fuels speculation about his role in upcoming Avengers films

Hugh Jackman declared he will “never say never again” regarding a potential return to playing Wolverine.

This statement comes after the actor had previously announced his retirement from the role following the character’s official conclusion in the 2017 film Logan, part of the 20th Century Fox X-Men Universe. However, Jackman surprised fans by returning to the 2024 Marvel blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine, effectively breaking his earlier claim of retirement.

On The Graham Norton Show, Jackman was asked about repeatedly changing his mind after declaring he was done with the role. He explained, “Maybe. I am never saying ‘never’ ever again… But I did mean it when I said ‘never’ [the first time], until the day when I changed my mind. But I really did for quite a few years, I meant it.”

This open-ended answer has fueled significant fan excitement about his possible involvement as Wolverine in the upcoming Avengers films, specifically next year’s Avengers: Doomsday or its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. Notably, Marvel has already announced the return of several of Jackman’s X-Men co-stars, such as Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, in Doomsday.
