Isaac Hayes’ Estate Reaches Settlement with Trump Over “Hold On, I’m Coming”

Isaac Hayes' Estate Reaches Settlement with Trump Over "Hold On, I'm Coming"

Isaac Hayes’ estate has reached a settlement with Donald Trump over his use of the song “Hold On, I’m Coming” at rallies and other campaign events.

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

“This resolution represents more than the conclusion of a legal matter,” Hayes’ estate said in a statement. “It reaffirms the importance of protecting intellectual property rights and copyrights, especially as they relate to legacy, ownership, and the responsible use of creative works. Isaac Hayes, Jr. dedicated his life to his craft, and his contributions to music and culture carry enduring value. As stewards of his legacy, we remain committed to ensuring that his work is respected and properly protected.”

“We are proud that this matter has helped further a broader conversation surrounding intellectual property rights and the obligation to honor creators and their estates,” the statement continued. “Protecting ownership is not only about the past, it is about preserving dignity, value, and accountability for future generations.”

In 2024, Hayes’ estate sued Trump for $3 million over the unauthorized use of the 1966 song, citing at least 133 instances in which it was played at campaign events. Trump’s campaign argued it was covered under a political entities license obtained through BMI, but the Hayes estate said it revoked any licensing permission after Trump began using the song at rallies in 2020 — and that he continued playing it anyway.

Last year, U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash granted an injunction barring Trump from using the song and allowed the Hayes estate’s infringement claims against his campaign to move forward.
