Margot Robbie Understood the Assignment – and Method Dressing Has Won Us Over

Margot Robbie Understood the Assignment - and Method Dressing Has Won Us Over

The on and off-screen chemistry between Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi isn’t the most captivating part of Wuthering Heights, nor is it the dramatic backdrop of the Yorkshire moors in the Brontë classic or even the plot itself. It’s the incredible attention to detail and jaw-dropping looks Margot has been serving.

Hitting cinema screens on Friday 13th, Valentine’s weekend, Wuthering Heights is the dark and dramatic tale of Cathy and Heathcliff, played by Margot and Jacob respectively and has garnered much hype for the overtly seductive scenes. But what has really got me excited? Yet again, Margot’s promotional wardrobe.

When it comes to sartorial tributes to her characters, Margot, and her stylist Andrew Mukamal, nail it every single time. So I knew the outfits would good – but this good? They have far exceeded my expectations.

When it comes to sartorial tributes to her characters, Margot, and her stylist Andrew Mukamal, nail it every single time.

They have had a lot of practice. Back in 2023, the world turned pink thanks to the release of the blockbuster hit, Barbie, whose titular character was played by Margot. To celebrate, Barbie was made real thanks to Margot and Andrew paying homage to the plastic icon by recreating some of her outfits dating back to 1959. They teamed up with designers like Chanel, Versace and Schiaparelli to truly embody Barbie on the pink carpet with over a dozen looks straight from our childhood memories. And so our obsession with matching clothes to the entertainment took hold. You’ve heard of method acting, this is method dressing, if you will.

Recently, the two have masterminded some of the most beautiful and meaningful outfits I’ve ever seen – and not just for one awards show or premiere. It’s every interview, photocall, red carpet and event surrounding the release of the Emerald Fennel directed classic.

Kicking off the Wuthering Heights tour-drobe in LA at the end of January, Margot wore a Roberto Cavalli LBD with long billowing sleeves and square neckline reminiscent of the late 18th century trends. She later changed into a lace number by Alexander McQueen, shaped in a similar silhouette. It was clear she was reflecting the vibe of the movie – and clothing easter eggs didn’t stop there.

Just two days later for the world premiere, Margot glided across the red vinyl floor in a dramatic, custom Schiaparelli gown. The stunning strapless dress featured a lace bodice (very apt) that then hit a fluted tiered skirt in black and red, seamlessly blending into the colour of the floor. A chef’s kiss for effort and detailing.

As if the showstopper of a dress wasn’t enough, Margot was lucky enough to wear the £5.7 million Taj Mahal necklace that was once owned by Elizabeth Taylor. Given to the late actress, who had a penchant for the most expensive jewellery in the world, the heart-shaped diamond is inscribed with Farsi words for “Love is Everlasting”. It was originally a gift from the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahangir to his wife, Empress Nur Jahan, in the 1600s, and was on loan to Margot by Cartier. The special meaning was a fitting edition chosen to reflect Heathcliff and Cathy’s love in the film. Geez, talk about attention to detail!

The method dressing didn’t end there. Margot has been dressing in a slew of symbolic ensembles including a red velvet corseted dress – a custom Chanel Couture gown no less. And to the UK premiere of the film, Margot braved the rain in a sheer Dilara Findikoglu dress that was finished with real woven hair . . . I know. Do with that what you will, but the symbolism behind this one is that it was worn with a replica of a ‘mourning’ bracelet once owned by Charlotte Brontë. The bracelet contained a woven piece of her sisters, Emily and Anne’s, hair. Truly, the depth of detail Margot and Andrew will go to has no limit.

It’s impossible to mention method dressing and not talk about Zendaya and life-long stylist, Law Roach. Together the two have created fashion history with looks that are nods to films she stars in. Remember the Mugler cyborg suit that broke the internet for the Dune 2 premier in 2024? It mirrored the sci-fi theme of the film effortlessly. Or how about all of the tennis nods in her clothes whilst promoting Challengers, which centred around the sport? And Spiderman looks? Yes, please. She always creates incredible outfits for her movies.

When themes become fashion, nothing makes gets me more in the mood to get to the cinema.

Then there’s the likes of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande giving nods to Elphaba and Glinda when they were promoting the Wicked franchise with pink and green looks – they even had detailing on their nail art. Plus, Jenna Ortega wore elevated gothic Wednesday looks when she played the famous Addams Family daughter.

So what’s the big deal? It’s just fancy dress, right? Well, for me it’s much, much more and it makes me feel excited when a film comes out. Sure there’s a marketing strategy that helps to publicise the new release, but when themes become fashion, nothing makes gets me more in the mood to get to the cinema.

Celebrities and their stylists are creating viral, captivating moments that send the internet into a spiral all in the name of fashion and cinema, and they’re taking us along for the ride. The level of effort, planning and care that goes into these outfits is an art and should be celebrated. Excuse me while I loosen my corset and dive into my popcorn . . .
