*NSYNC Choreographer Sues Sony Music for Letting Deadpool Dance His “Bye Bye Bye” Routine

*NSYNC Choreographer Sues Sony Music for Letting Deadpool Dance His "Bye Bye Bye" Routine

Darrin Henson, the creator of the iconic *NSYNC “Bye Bye Bye” dance routine, has a score to settle with Sony Music: The choreographer is suing the label for allowing his work to be performed without his approval in projects including the movie Deadpool & Wolverine and the video game Fortnite.

Billboard reports that Henson claims to own the choreography for the routine, meaning that Sony Music was not authorized to license it out themselves. According to the complaint, filed March 27th, “The reality is that the work belongs to Henson, and to obtain full acknowledgement of his ownership and a complete transfer of all monies earned by SME and its licensees, the plaintiff must seek declaratory relief from the court.”

Henson won an MTV Video Music Award for best choreography for his work on the 2000 “Bye Bye Bye” music video. In addition to Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool performing the full routine during the opening credits sequence in the 2024 superhero movie, the “Bye Bye Bye” choreography can also be seen in Fortnite as an emote. Neither Marvel or Epic Games are named in the lawsuit, which is now pending.
