Summary

  • Pablo Picasso’s 1919 painting, Still life with guitar, went missing during transport to a Granada exhibition
  • The small, framed work is insured for €600,000 EUR and was discovered missing upon unpacking on October 6
  • Organizers cited improper packaging, and Spanish police have launched an investigation

Pablo Picasso‘s 1919 work, Still life with guitar, went missing during its transport from Madrid to a temporary exhibition in Granada, Spain.

As per Reuters, exhibit organizers The CajaGranada Foundation confirmed that the small framed painting was being transported with other larger pieces for “Still life. The eternity of the inert.” While the shipment arrived at the CajaGranada cultural centre on the morning of October 3, organizers were unaware of the missing artwork until the shipment’s unpacking on October 6.

“As not all packages were properly numbered, it was not possible to carry out a thorough check without unpacking them,” the foundation said.

Organizers added that security footage revealed “no incident occurred” during that weekend, and that a complaint has been filed with the national police.

Still life with guitar, which is owned by a private collector, measures at 5 inches by 4 inches. It’s insured for an appraised value of €600,00 EUR (approximately $700,000 USD).
