Police Report: Ex-Mastodon Guitarist Brent Hinds Was at Fault for Crash That Took His Life

A new police report has found that former Mastodon guitarist-singer Brent Hinds was at fault for the motorcycle crash that took his life on the night of August 20th in Atlanta. The new findings are in contrast to a preliminary investigation that put the blame on the female driver of an SUV for failing to yield at an intersection.

The Atlanta Police Department posted the new police report this afternoon (September 4th). In summary, it reads, “After conducting time distance calculations of the Motorcycle and assessing the changes in velocity of the BMW it was deemed that Hinds was traveling between 63 and 68 mph. Video of the intersection was used for the calculations. The video clearly depicts the crash. Hinds was at fault for the crash.”

According to Atlanta News First, that speed of between 63 and 68 mph was roughly twice the speed limit at the site of the crash. The investigation also notes that the female driver “was positive the light was green” when she made the left turn, with witnesses confirming that Hinds was going at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash.

The report also reveals that the 51-year-old Hinds was breathing and moving when police arrived at the scene, but later died at the hospital.

This past weekend, a memorial walk was held in Hinds’ honor in Atlanta, where hundreds of people gathered to pay tribute to the metal musician, including his longtime Mastodon bandmates Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher. The band also honored the late musician at their concert in Alaska a couple nights after the crash.
