Prime Video has officially pulled back the curtain on its highly anticipated God of War adaptation, sharing a first-look image of the series‘ lead duo. Stepping into the mythic world of Midgard, Ryan Hurst takes on the legendary role of the Spartan warrior Kratos, with Callum Vinson co-starring as his young son, Atreus.
With production now underway in Vancouver, Canada, the live-action series aims to faithfully translate the critically acclaimed 2018 PlayStation game to the small screen. The debut promotional image mirrors the opening moments of the video game, showcasing Kratos in a teaching stance alongside Atreus, bow in hand. Hurst is no stranger to the franchise’s Norse saga, having previously delivered a BAFTA-nominated performance as Thor in the 2022 sequel God of War Ragnarök.
Showrunner Ronald D. Moore takes the creative helm for the two-season order, co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Sony Pictures Television, and PlayStation Productions. The narrative will trace Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a perilous journey to honor the final wish of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Along the rugged path, Kratos strives to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus attempts to show his father how to be a more compassionate human.
Rounding out the godly ensemble are heavy hitters including Mandy Patinkin as the All-Father Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye is locked in to direct the first two episodes.
