Staff Picks: Best Songs of the Week May 23rd - May 29th

Every week, Consequence staffers spotlight their favorite new songs for our Songs of the Week column. This week, we’re excited about new tunes from Bossman Dlow and Megan Thee Stallion, Gilla Band, Madeon, reggie, and more.

Bossman Dlow & Megan Thee Stallion — “Motion Party (Remix)”

BossMan Dlow is the definition of a cocky rapper, and his latest single, “Motion Party,” sees the MC pursuing an equal partner for his escapades. Enter: Megan Thee Stallion. While she may not be his romantic counterpart, Megan matches BossMan Dlow’s energy on the remix, which keeps the same production based on Khia’s 2002 hit “My Neck, My Back.” “You want a beggin’ ass bitch or a rich one?” Megan demands. “You want a bitch with some motion, or a stiff one?” Well, Ms. Stallion, when you put it like that… — Kiana Fitzgerald

Gilla Band — “Giraffe”

For the first time in 4 years, the Dublin-based Gilla Band have released new music. “Giraffe” begins with a commanding bassline blending into scratchy guitars and a turbulent post-punk arrangement makes a sharp turn into a throbbing, dub-heavy dance-punk track.  While describing the lyrics of an Irish band as “Joycean” can feel like beating a dead horse, with an abundance of stream-of-consciousness lyrics like “Burping the beta-bet, little death, soft teeth, gappy little freak,” it’s difficult not to. — Kelly Darroch

J Noa, Trooko — “ANTISISTEMA”

The charismatic Dominican rapper J Noa is back with “ANTISISTEMA,” a Trooko-produced banger that showcases her chameleonic abilities behind the mic. The verses find her rapping at a quick, fiery pace set against a swaggering mid-tempo beat, asserting her dominance early on and bringing plenty of drama. But then, right at the 2-minute mark, the track breaks down and Noa rises through with a spirited reggaeton detour — before we get too comfortable, though, she and Trooko switch us right back to the original throbbing groove and close the song with a satisfying instrumental outro. It’s a heater, through and through. — Paolo Ragusa

K Camp — “1000 Hugs”

Despite the braggadocious singles that have propelled him to his current status (see: the infectious “Cut Her Off”), Atlanta artist K CAMP has a soft spot. His new project GIANT mostly tends to the ego, but “1000 Hugs” stands apart due to K CAMP’s adoring nature. The rapper and singer floats his charismatic vocals over producer Zaytoven’s gentle aural playground, as murmuring background harmonies carry the song to affectionate heights. “Give yourself 1,000 hugs, baby,” K CAMP sings from the heart. “You deserve it, you the one that need some love, baby.” — K. Fitzgerald

Madeon — “Red Jacket (Ft. Sam Gellaitry)”

Madeon has recruited Sam Gellaitry for “Red Jacket,” the final pre-release track off his upcoming album Victory. With a mammoth, buzzing bass line, the song hearkens back to the era of EDM that Madeon got his start making; less chopped and screwed and more brash, with big contrasts and even bigger hooks. Gellaitry is a perfect collaborator here, especially as he’s evolved stylistically and embraced the pop star potential of his bright tenor. It’s a whole lot of fun, and a great showcase for Madeon’s nostalgic sonic detour on Victory. — P. Ragusa

Monaleo — “Everythang Pinka (Ft. Teezo Touchdown)”

One of Monaleo’s most endearing qualities is she doesn’t allow herself to be trapped in a box. The Houston artist is a real rap spitter, but she also loves to sing her heart out; with “Everythang Pinka,” Monaleo accomplishes both. Over production that includes addictive steel drums, the MC (and vocalist) expresses her love for all things pink. It’s a simple subject on its surface, but Monaleo expands out to express her undying reverence for the South. Fellow H-Town representer Teezo Touchdown offers a charming feature here, which includes hyper-specific callbacks to Houston culture (see: “Maan!”). “Everythang Pinka” is Monaleo’s ode to the elements that make her who she is. — K. Fitzgerald

reggie — “Beautiful Things 1st scene/audition”

Chameleonic Houston artist reggie has been ambitious in his musical output since he dropped his first single, 2020’s dark and searching “Southside Fade.” With his debut album, UNDRA, released today, reggie continues to color outside the lines of expectation. A heady mix of hip-hop, blues, and gospel, with alternative flair, the project sees reggie flexing his creative muscle as he cobbles together far-flung sounds. “Beautiful Things 1st scene/audition,” the opening track, is a plain map of reggie’s emotions: “But I see beautiful things when I dream — so I sleep.” A chorus of background vocalists offer incremental levity, until the soundscape opens like clearing clouds making way for a better day. — K. Fitzgerald

Starcleaner Reunion — “Weather Instrument”

Starcleaner Reunion, the NYC-based dream pop band, have just released “Weather Instrument,” the first single since their 2024 EP, Café Life. Similar to their previous releases, this track is breezy and bouncy with a patchwork of textures, but the horn section brings a new flair that settles well into a sharper version of their sound. Thematically, they explore the idea of home’s warmth and familiarity with vivid images like “A warm sun spot in the kitchen, a silhouette curled into a circle,” capturing this sentiment for all to enjoiy. — K. Darroch
