Sturgill Simpson has made his new Johnny Blue Skies album, Mutiny After Midnight, available to stream on YouTube ahead of its March 13th release.
Spanning nine tracks, Mutiny After Midnight was recorded at Nashville’s Easy Eye Sound Studios, with each song written on the spot. Simpson said he and his band — now billed as Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds — made an “album centered firmly on groove,” inspired by hours of watching fusion-funk greats Stuff and revisiting albums like Marvin Gaye’s In Our Lifetime, where the end-of-the-world response is “let’s dance and make love.” He further explained that the songs are divided between the dark state of the world and the bright state of love, but that for all its big ideas, the band’s simple goal was “to make a dance record.”
Simpson previously said the album would only be available physically, including on vinyl, CD, and cassette via High Top Mountain Records in partnership with Atlantic Outpost. However, fans can enjoy the record digitally via the YouTube stream below.
