Limp Bizkit have embraced crowd participation during their ongoing “Still Sucks” tour, and most recently invited a kid onstage to perform “Break Stuff.” It went down at the band’s Sunday night (May 22nd) show in Green Bay, Wisconsin. During the closing moments of the gig — an SNL-style full-crew send off — Fred Durst halted the festivities for an impromptu performance of “Break Stuff” featuring a tiny special guest. “I promised this young man a little favor,” Durst said, pointing to a boy on the stage. With mics in hand, the two proceeded to bust into a raucous rendition of the song. Advertisement Related Video The kid was clearly familiar with the track, matching Durst rhyme for rhyme. The audience went berserk as they were given the ultimate encore banger. It wasn’t the first time Limp B...
There’s a certain poignancy to Slipknot’s choice of pre-show piped-in track: AC/DC’s “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You).” That song was the emotional core of School of Rock for a reason. Amid the boredom and frustration and anxiety of daily life, it’s a sacred activity to transcend the B.S. with a healthy dose of heavy metal. And that’s exactly what thousands of dyed-hair suburban kids, up-for-anything parents and metal-loving weekend warriors did, packed into Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on the evening of May 20th. The mortar fire in the AC/DC tune gave way to actual pyrotechnics — to cheers. In an ironic twist, the track segued into country star Billie Jo Spears’ 1968 recording “Get Behind Me Satan and Push” — which locked onto the name “Satan” and seemed to melt. Devil’s...
Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter has elected to sit out the band’s upcoming UK and European tour dates, saying he’s “not ready” to leave the United States yet. Carpenter posted a video statement on Deftones’ Twitter, explaining that he made his decision based on “everything going on in the world.” It’s worth noting that Carpenter expressed staunch anti-vax sentiments in the past, and would likely have a difficult time traversing European countries is he’s indeed unvaccinated against COVID-19. Carpenter’s full video statement reads as follows: “Hey, everyone, it’s Steph. As much as I would love to be on the road with my brothers right now, playing for all of our incredible international fans, I have chosen to remain playing domestically for now. With everything going on in the world, I’...
Setting the Stage: After twice postponing their highly anticipated tour due to the pandemic, Deftones have finally hit the road again. Most of the fans in attendance at the Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City had been holding onto their tickets for two years, and they were rewarded with a beautiful night of perfect weather on Sunday (May 15th). Not to mention, a full moon hung over the evening’s festivities, with a sensational real-life backdrop that included the Empire State Building to the left and the Brooklyn Bridge to the right. In fact, later on that night, a “blood moon” would be visible due to a total lunar eclipse. If that weren’t enough, French metal masters Gojira were providing direct support, with Australian electronic duo VOWWS opening the evening. Taking the Stage: With...
Rising heavy pop duo Nova Twins have shared the new song “Puzzles” ahead of their upcoming sophomore album, Supernova, out June 17th. We’ve been following the steady ascent of Nova Twins here at Consequence, previously premiering the track “Cleopatra.” The duo of singer-guitarist Amy Love and bassist-singer Georgia South fuse pop, hip-hop, and heavy music with unprecedented infectiousness, “Puzzles” being the latest example. The overtly sexual song kicks off with sinister beats and acidic, crushed-out R&B vocals from Love. The chorus drop — complete with chugging metal riffs — is absolutely massive and fit for both the moshpit and dance floor alike. Cave In have announced a Summer 2022 US tour with Author & Punisher, and have shared the video for their new song “Reckoning.” It’s the fourth track we’ve heard from the Cave In’s forthcoming album, Heavy Pendulum (out May 20th), and marks the Boston band’s first song written entirely by guitarist Adam McGrath. Structured around skeletal acoustic strums, splashes of guitar, and an infectious rhythmic stomp, the track has a ’90s grunge vibe and churns with positive energy. “‘Reckoning’ started as a demo I sent to the band for consideration while mapping out the track list for Heavy Pendulum,” McGrath said. “It was inspired by the idea of adding a song to the acoustic/electric live sets Steve and I had been performing on and off for the last 20 years. A fresh song with that set-up (acous...

Bassist Sergio Vega has opened up about his departure from Deftones, while also detailing his new musical project. Vega had effectively left the Deftones over a year ago, but only went public with the news in March. In a lengthy video statement, Vega explained that he never became an official member of the band and contract disagreements regarding his position in the group led to his exit. Vega was initially hired by Deftones to fill-in for Chi Cheng, who was in a coma following a 2008 car accident. He remained in the band following Cheng’s passing in 2013. As Vega tells it, cutting him into the official Deftones lineup would have affected the sha...
Grey Daze, the Phoenix-based band that was fronted by the late Chester Bennington prior to his career in Linkin Park, has announced the newly recorded album The Phoenix, arriving June 17th. The new LP follows 2020’s Amends, another album that featured Bennington’s vocals. Like Amends — with the blessing of Chester’s family — the original members of Grey Daze re-recorded the band’s old material from the ’90s while incorporating Chester’s vocal tracks. The new album also features contributions from Dave Navarro, Richard Patrick, and Bennington’s daughters, Lily and Lila Bennington. After two postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Deftones are finally set to kick off their North American tour with Gojira. Singer Chino Moreno expects the long-awaited excursion to be a cathartic experience after a couple of years off the road. The tour was originally scheduled for Summer 2020, then postponed to Summer 2021, and finally rescheduled for Spring 2022. The outing kicks off tonight (April 14th) in Portland, Oregon, and runs through a May 28th show in Minneapolis, with tickets available via Ticketmaster. Heavy Consequence recently caught up with Moreno to discuss his side project ††† (Crosses), but he also took some time to share his feelings about Deftones’ highly anticipated return to the stage. “I hate to say this, because it sounds very spoiled, but since I was 15-16 ...
An ALS patient with complete paralysis became the first known person in his condition to use a brain implant to communicate, and one of the first things he asked for was to hear a Tool album. Scientists were able to communicate with the late-stage ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) patient using a brain implant that allows him to select letters and form sentences. “The neurological disease destroys the nerves that control movement,” per Science.org, “and most patients die within five years of diagnosis. When a person with ALS can no longer speak, they can use an eye-tracking camera to select letters on a screen.” The patient in question, who is now 36, began working with a research team at the University of Tübingen in 2018. At the time, he could still move his eyes and told the...
Deftones have parted ways with bassist Sergio Vega after an apparent contract dispute. Vega replaced Chi Cheng after the latter fell into a coma following a horrific car accident, and remained with the band following Cheng’s death in 2013. However, Vega claims he never became an “official member” of Deftones despite handling bass duties for roughly 12 years. Vega, who’s also the bassist for New York post-hardcore band Quicksand, took to Instagram TV to read a lengthy statement explaining the situation. As he tells it, an unreconciled contract negotiation related to Vega’s limited role in the band led to his exit last year. Related Video The statement read [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]: “To give a brief history about me and my friendship with Deftones. We met in 1995. I filled in for [la...
