Song of the Week: The National Pause the Doomscrolling with “Tropic Morning News”

Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify Top Songs playlist. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, The National help us cut through the noise with “Tropic Morning News.” January is unofficially a time to reset. Particularly in recent years, it’s become a month of new routines, setting intentions, and light reinvention — for better or for worse. While many of us are trying to embrace more healthful practices, some habits are harder to break than others: Rolling over, grabbing the phone off the bedside table, and beginning the obligatory morning doomscroll is the focus of “Tropic Morning News,” the new so...

For some extra backup, Wentz enlisted some of his biggest fans to don wigs of his signature emo haircut and escort him to the stage. Once he joined Stump and Hurley, the bassist took off his wig to reveal his current blonde tresses and FOB ran through the first single off their newly announced album, So Much (For) Stardust. Stump didn’t seem to skip a beat despite taking greater responsibility on the guitar, and the crowd was visibly enthused by the performance. Watch Fall Out Boy play “Love from...

Fall Out Boy’s Joe Trohman Takes Leave of Absence

Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman has announced a leave of absence from the band in order to focus on his mental health. “Without divulging all the details, I must disclose that my mental health has rapidly deteriorated over the past several years. So, to avoid fading away and never returning, I will be taking a break from work which regrettably includes stepping away from Fall Out Boy for a spell,” Trohman wrote in a statement posted to the band’s Instagram page on Wednesday. Trohman’s announcement came hours after Fall Out Boy announced their newest album, So Much (For) Stardust. He acknowledged the awkward timing, writing, “It pains me to make this decision, especially when we are releasing a new album that fills me with great pride (the sin I’m most proud of).” Advertisement Related V...

Fall Out Boy Announce New Album So Much (For) Stardust, Share “Love From the Other Side”: Stream

Fall Out Boy have announced their new album, So Much (For) Stardust, out March 24th via Fueled by Ramen/Elektra Records. As a preview, they’ve shared the first single “Love From the Other Side.” So Much (For) Stardust marks Fall Out Boy’s return to Fueled by Ramen 20 years after releasing their debut studio album, Take This to Your Grave, on the label. In a statement, lead vocalist Patrick Stump said the making of the record also marked a return to basics. “Technology has made it really easy to make records much more quickly these days. There’s nothing wrong with that, and that spontaneity can be exciting,” Stump said. “But we wanted to get back to the way we used to work. We wanted to make a record that was really lovingly crafted and deliberate and patiently guided — like someone cooked ...

Nick Cave Doesn’t Appreciate “Bullshit” AI-Generated Nick Cave Songs

Stop sending Nick Cave those AI-generated “in the style of Nick Cave” songs made from ChatGPT because he’s just not into them. In his latest The Red Hand Files newsletter, the songwriter made that opinion very clear while tearing into a fan’s submission of one such ChatGPT song based on Cave’s own lyrics. “Since its launch in November [of] last year many people, most buzzing with a kind of algorithmic awe, have sent me songs ‘in the style of Nick Cave’ created by ChatGPT,” Cave began. “There have been dozens of them. Suffice to say, I do not feel the same enthusiasm around this technology.” He continued, “I understand that ChatGPT is in its infancy but perhaps that is the emerging horror of AI — that it will forever be in its infancy, as it will always have further to go, and the...

Limp Bizkit’s Wes Borland Cites Album Review in Defamation Suit Against Indie Singer Ex-Wife

Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland is suing his ex-wife Carré Callaway, aka indie singer Queen Kwong, for defamation, and he is citing an album review in his lawsuit. Borland and Callaway split up in 2019, and the defamation suit stems from a 2020 divorce agreement that prevented both parties from publicly speaking or giving interviews that “defame the other.” Borland’s suit cites a Bandcamp Daily article about Callaway, who was interviewed for the piece. In the article, Callaway openly discusses details surrounding the divorce, claiming that Borland gave her three days to leave their Detroit-area home with several rescue cats, one of which died in the process. Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor Talks Cancer Diagnosis: “I’m Gonna Live Life”

Last year, longtime Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage four metastatic prostate cancer. Now, in a new interview with Channel 5 News, the artist shared a positive outlook on the situation, promising that “I’m gonna live life” despite dealing with an incurable disease. Taylor was diagnosed with prostate cancer about four years ago, and said he originally didn’t think much of the pain he was experiencing before getting it checked out. “I was out jogging, and I started to notice what you would think was a kind of arthritic sort of pain, and I never thought more of it than that,” he recalled. “I started having these symptoms, didn’t recognize them for what they could be, and then I noticed, on my neck, I had what felt like tumors.” Upon receiving hi...

Kings of Leon’s 10 Best Songs

This article was originally published in 2013 and has been updated. You can draw a line in the sand of many musicians’ careers, a turning point where their sound changed completely. It’s a shift that usually gains a stadium of new fans while losing a club of old ones. Enter Kings of Leon and 2008’s Only by the Night. The album’s FM-friendly singles, “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody,” catapulted the Nashville family into sports arenas and festivals everywhere — yet the divide between fans grew far and wide. They returned in late 2010 with the polarizing Come Around Sundown, and while many longtime fans were slightly underwhelmed, it saw the band reach a new pinnacle of success, headlining Coachella and making their second appearance on Saturday Night Live. This proved to be a ...

The National Tease LP9, Two New Songs, Collabs with Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers, Sufjan Stevens

The National have dropped a teaser and a whole lit class’ worth of clues for their ninth studio album and follow-up to 2019’s I Am Easy to Find. Over on the band’s Instagram page, they shared a link to AmericanMary.com/LP9, where users are greeted with a prompt for a password. Enter the words EVIL FOREBODINGS, and you’ll be greeted with an altered version of the first pages of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Instead of a letter to Mrs. Saville, this missive is addressed to Mrs. Bridgers, while the name Margaret has been replaced with Taylor, and “our good Uncle Thomas” has given way to “our good Uncle Sufjan.” These are likely references to Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift, and Sufjan Stevens, which lends credence to an alleged leaked tracklist that Amazon accidentally publis...

Green Day Cover Elvis Costello’s “Alison” on Nimrod-Era Demo: Stream

Later this month, Green Day will release Nimrod 25 – 25th Anniversary Edition, a retrospective box set celebrating their 1997 album that includes previously unreleased demos and a live set from the era. Today, the band has shared one of those demos, a cover of Elvis Costello’s 1977 ballad “Alison.” In “Alison (Demo),” Green Day go all in on Elvis Costello’s gentle crooning. The percussion in the original lends the track a soft rock vibe, but in the punk band’s cover, Billie Joe Armstrong’s unmistakable voice sits alone atop only a muted guitar, emphasizing the sweetness of Costello’s tale of unrequited love. Check it out below. The Green Day frontman notably performed “Alison” alongside Elvis Costello during a 2006 taping of the VH1 Classic series Decades Rock Live. Advertisement Rela...
