Dave Grohl and Karen O Perform Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll”: Watch
The dreidel won’t be the only thing rolling on the floor this Festival of Lights: For the sixth night of his 2022 Hanukkah Sessions, Dave Grohl recruited Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs for a rousing rendition of her band’s party anthem “Heads Will Roll.” As with all the performances throughout the week, it was taped in front of a live audience in Los Angeles at Largo at the Coronet. Dave Grohl and Greg Kurstin are back to celebrate the fifth day of Hanukkah, and this time around, they’ve teamed up with Beck to perform his 2005 track “E-Pro.” The performance was recorded in front of a live audience at the Largo in Los Angeles earlier this month for the third annual edition of Grohl and Kurstin’s The Hanukkah Sessions, which celebrates the religious festival with covers of songs by Jewish musicians. Though the pipes she flaunted at September’s Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts belie her youth, Violet Grohl will celebrate her 17th birthday in a few months. She and her dad Dave Grohl covered Janis Ian’s apty-titled “At Seventeen” for the fourth night of the elder Grohl’s 2022 Hanukkah Sessions. Now on its third year, Grohl’s Hanukkah Sessions are meant to highlight the legacies of iconic Jewish musicians; Ian absolutely fits the bill, and we can’t think of few songs more heartwrenching for a father-daughter cover than the folk artist’s 1975 magnum opus. Martin Duffy, Keyboardist in Primal Scream and Felt, Dead at 55
Martin Duffy, who played keyboard in Primal Scream, Felt, and Charlatans, has died at the age of 55. According to Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, Duffy died on Sunday from a brain injury he suffered after falling at his home in Brighton. Duffy joined Felt in 1985 the age of 16, after responding to a flyer posted at a Virgin record store. Over a prolific four-year period through 1989, Felt released seven albums, including the widely-regarded titles like Ignite the Seven Cannons, The Seventeenth Century, and Forever Breathes the Lonely Word. After fulfilling their record contract, Felt broke up in 1989. As we previously reported, the singer has looked and sounded like his usually fun self based on fan footage from Mr. Bungle’s current South American tour. That was none more evident than when Patton attempted to take out a hovering drone during the band’s Knotfest Chile performance on Sunday night (December 11th). R.E.M. released their debut EP Chronic Town a whopping 40 years ago, and in celebration of the anniversary, a star-studded lineup of musicians and fans convened in the band’s Athens, Georgia hometown for a tribute event last night. Hosted by comedian David Cross, most of the night consisted of R.E.M. members Peter Buck and Mike Mills playing with a house band, which itself included Black Crowes’ Rich Robinson and Sven Pipien, as well as Screaming Trees’ Barrett Martin on drums.
