Noel Gallagher returns today with a new song called “Pretty Boy,” the lead single from his untitled forthcoming album with his High Flying Birds. It features ex-Smiths member Johnny Marr on guitar. As Oasis’ former chief songwriter, Gallagher is already known for writing massive earworm melodies, and there’s no shortage of those on “Pretty Boy.” With Marr’s immediately-recognizable guitar jangle backing him, Gallagher seems to wrestle with his own identity and sense of self: “Can you delete my number?/ I wanna get me free/ I wanna change my star sign/ Because it don’t suit me,” he sings in the final verse. “For this new record it was the first thing I wrote, the first thing I demoed and the first thing I finished, so it’s only right that it’s the first thing people get to hear,” Gallagher ...

This is Halloween, of course, but Danny Elfman’s October 28th show at the Hollywood Bowl was more than just a Nightmare Before Christmas theme party. During a whopping 32-song set, the artist celebrated all the phases of his career, from his Oingo Boingo days to his film compositions and his latest solo album, Big Mess. Elfman played a ton of Oingo Boingo songs — “Insects,” “Just Another Day,” and “Grey Matter” among them — for his OG fans, while also throwing in enough film suites (Spider-Man, Batman, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands) to remind you that he’s had a hand in more iconic soundtracks than you may remember. Backed by both a regular rock band and an orchestra, a choir joined Elfman for classics like “This Is Halloween,” effortlessly running through all the voices of the gho...
Sure, Danny Elfman has soundtracked a lot of family-friendly movies in his day, but that doesn’t necessarily means he wants your kids to come to his performances. For his Halloween gigs at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on October 28th and 29th, the prolific composer has one request: Please, leave your kids at home. Elfman recently told Variety that, while his Bowl performances will pull heavily from his epic Coachella set earlier this year, he plans on dedicating more of the set time to his 2021 solo album Big Mess — which is decidedly not G-rated. “I just keep saying over and over, leave your kids home. This is not a kids’ show and this isn’t a family show,” Elfman clarified. “This isn’t The Nightmare Before Christmas. The Coachella show had a bit of Nightmare Before Christma...
On November 11th, 2011, MGMT performed an original 45-minute piece at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York to mark the opening of an exhibit celebrating the artist Maurizio Cattelan. Now, the band will finally release that performance as a live album, appropriately titled 11-11-11. The project, of course, arrives on 11-11-22. MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser were commissioned to write music in response to the 2011 Cattelan display, which suspended 130 pieces of art from varying heights. “We’re creating a musical experience that works for the building and for the construction and presentation of the Cattelan exhibit,” the duo said at the time. “It’s an art exhibit done in a completely original way, so it deserves music which is completely original.” After debu...

Unknown Mortal Orchestra return today with the new single “I Killed Captain Cook” and its accompanying music video. Additionally, the psych-rock project led by Ruban Nielson has unveiled North American and UK tour dates for 2023, their first outing in four years. When he was a child, Nielson’s mother would tell him the story of Captain James Cook, the English explorer known for colonizing Polynesia and attempting to kidnap Hawaiian chief Kalaniʻōpuʻu before ultimately meeting his demise in Hawaii. The aptly-titled “I Killed Captain Cook” is told from the perspective of the Hawaiian who rightfully killed Cook in defense of their homeland: “One of the many lies that they told/ Was that they were divine and fair/ With Cook’s blood on my hand/ The spell was broken there,” goes the final v...
