Arctic Monkeys Return With New Album The Car: Stream

Get your 2014 Tumblr flannels — or, rather, your 1970s hot pants — ready, because Arctic Monkeys have unveiled their new album The Car.  In his review of the album, Paolo Ragusa says that The Car “is sonically aligned with the slow-burning psych pop of 2018’s Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, the band farther away than ever from the tense post-punk or bluesy garage rock that characterized much of their output pre-2018. Orchestral flourishes, though not overwhelmingly frequent, give many of The Car’s songs a classic feel, while Turner’s vocal persona evokes a midlife crisis David Bowie.” Arctic Monkeys previewed The Car with the singles “There’d Better Be a Mirrorball” (which we named Song of the Week) and “Body Paint” (which they performed on Fallon).  Advertise...

Kurt Cobain’s Estate Slams “Unauthorized” Opera Adapting Gus Van Sant’s Last Days

Kurt Cobain’s estate has slammed an adaptation of Gus Van Sant’s dramatized film Last Days by London’s Royal Opera House, saying the production is an “unauthorized attempt” to continue exploiting the fictionalized story of the late singer’s final days. “Last Days has been created and written without permission,” the estate said in a statement. “This show, just like the movie, is an unauthorized attempt to benefit from the brief meeting set up with Kurt and Gus Van Zant. This one meeting has been exploited for profit for thirty years now and enough is enough.” A spokesperson for the Royal Opera House issued the following response: “The Royal Opera’s production of Last Days is adapted from Gus Van Sant’s cult film of the same name, released in 2005. It is a fictionalized account, and wa...

Yungblud Is Selling Necklaces Made From His Used Chewing Gum

Yungblud fans can now bid on a one-of-a-kind piece of merchandise, and it’s for a pretty good cause. The English artist has teamed up with 5 Gum and the luxury jewelry artist Greg Yuna for a line of necklaces that feature gum chewed by Yungblud himself, and all the proceeds benefit the National Independent Venue Foundation (NIVF). 5 Gum sponsored Yungblud’s recent US tour, and he chewed some of the company’s products  before hitting the stage every night. Yuna encased the gum in Lucite and created 15 necklaces that feature white diamonds and a charm engraved with the 5 Gum logo and Yuna’s signature stamp, all on a 14K white gold chain. The jewelry — known as the “Masterpieces” collection — comes with a certificate of authentication and a pack of the limited-edition Cobalt Peppermint 5...

Every Green Day Album Ranked From Worst to Best

This feature originally ran in 2016, but we’re dusting it off for the 25th anniversary of Nimrod on October 14th. More than 30 years ago, two 14-year-old smartasses named Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt decided to play music together in and around Berkeley, California. Alongside drummer John “Al Sobrante” Kiffmeyer, the three formed Sweet Children, causing all sorts of ruckus within the surrounding DIY punk scene — enough to catch the eyes and ears of Larry Livermore, who immediately signed them to Lookout! Records. It was here that the story of Green Day truly started, and through multiple EPs, two full-length efforts, and one Tré Cool, the Bay Area brethren would land a major record deal and change the rock ‘n’ roll landscape. Red Hot Chili Peppers Unveil New Album Return of the Dream Canteen: Stream

Red Hot Chili Peppers are back with Return of the Dream Canteen, their second album of 2022. Listen to the project below. Anthony Kiedis, Flea, and Chad Smith have clearly been in good spirits since reuniting with their beloved on-again, off-again guitarist John Frusciante. Not only did they write enough music to follow-up April’s Unlimited Love just six months later, but they also penned a sentimental message to fans about Return of the Dream Canteen‘s origins. The statement reads: “We went in search of ourselves as the band that we have somehow always been. Just for the fun of it we jammed and learned some old songs. Before long we started the mysterious process of building new songs. A beautiful bit of chemistry meddling that had befriended us hundreds of times along the ...

Garbage’s Shirley Manson Says Average Musician “Living Hand to Mouth”

Garbage singer Shirley Manson is the latest artist to speak up about the “enormous strain” musicians are facing due to the current state of live music. In a statement posted to Instagram, she said a “large percentage” of fellow musicians “are likely living hand to mouth” as a result. “Live music is under enormous strain,” Manson wrote in a caption accompanying the cover photo of a recent Vulture report titled The Live-Music Industry Is Broken. “The average musician can no longer survive let alone thrive under the current conditions. We are seeing so many precious talents buckle under the economic injustice of a system that does not pay the creative for their artistic output.” Manson continued, “Everyone is vying for a handful of venues in order to make a small amount of money to tide them ...

The 1975’s 10 Best Songs

There are British pop rock bands, there are British pop rock bands with charismatic frontmen, and then there’s The 1975. From their inception in the late 2000s, the quartet — comprised of vocalist and songwriter Matty Healy, drummer and producer George Daniel, bassist Ross MacDonald, and guitarist Adam Hahn — have spanned from scrappy funk to post-hardcore, hi-fi pop songs to paranoid New Wave, with songs that can be painfully revealing amidst songs that are jam-packed with jokes and absurdist commentary. Their 2013 self-titled debut was wildly popular (especially in the Tumblr Era), but the new wave pastiche and occasionally indulgent aura of Matty Healy led to a few detractors — this writer included. At the time, it was hard to understand what was so special about this band, what allowed...

The Strokes Recorded a New Album On Top of a Mountain with Rick Rubin

The Strokes recently recorded a new album in Costa Rica with producer Rick Rubin. Rubin shared the news during an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience that went live on Wednesday (October 12th). “A few months ago, I was in Costa Rica recording a new album with The Strokes,” Rubin revealed. “We rented this house on the top of a mountain and set the band up outside. So it’s like, they’re doing a concert for the ocean on the top of a mountain. And we did that everyday — it was incredible. They didn’t want to leave, it was like the best experience.” The as-yet-unannounced album would mark the follow-up to 2020’s The New Abnormal, which was also produced by Rubin. Advertisement Consequence has reached out to The Strokes’ representatives for additional information. Editor’s Note: We recently upda...

Blink-182’s 10 Best Songs

This feature originally ran in February 2015. We’re revisiting it in celebration of Blink-182’s upcoming reunion tour and new music. “What is it about 20-somethings?” asks the title of a New York Times Magazine article published in 2010. The subtext to that question is another question: “Why are people in their 20s finding it so hard to grow up?” The answers range from changing social mores to an uncertain job market, but maybe it’s even simpler than that. Maybe a new generation of so-called “millennials” is finally starting to understand a line they heard in a song back in 1999: “Nobody likes you when you’re 23.” If you’re a sociologist searching for Ground Zero — that time when the 20s shifted from a life stage of “emerging adulthood” to one of “prolonged adolescence” — an album called E...
