Arctic Monkeys played the Zurich Openair festival in Switzerland on Tuesday, and during their set, they debuted a new song called “I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am.” Watch fan-captured footage below. “I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am” sounds more like Arctic Monkey’s last album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, than their irreverent, rocking beginnings. In the live clip, Alex Turner belts out the song’s title a cappella style before the band kicks into a groovy, bass-heavy number. The new song’s style is in line with drummer Matt Helders’ recent description of the next Arctic Monkeys LP. “I mean, it’s never gonna be like ‘R U Mine?’ and all that stuff again, you know, the heavy riffs and stuff,” he revealed. “But there are riffs in there and [it’s] a bit more up-tempo, even though it’s...

Donning a green camo jacket and a face full of Heath Ledger-style Joker makeup, Gerard Way leads My Chemical Romance into their first North American tour in more than 900 days, often channeling the same chaotic energy of whom he decorated his visage. The fizzing static distortions in the intro to “The Foundations of Decay,” the surprise single released this May in support of the reunion tour, practically serve as white noise behind the jubilant roars of the crowd as the band takes the stage inside Oklahoma City’s Paycom Arena. (Grab tickets to the rest of MCR’s tour dates here.) Clocking in at an epic six minutes, “The Foundations of Decay” features a bite-sized version of the same world-building story-craft often associated with the My Chemical Romance albums. Way’s soft-spoken early vers...
Jim Ward has a new Sparta album on the way. The self-titled project arrives in full on October 14th, while the first single “Mind Over Matter” and its B-side, “Spiders,” are out now. Forged in the aftermath of Ward’s other band At the Drive-In way back in 2001, Sparta were long overdue for an eponymous album. In a press release, Ward described the record (and its name) as a “fresh slate.” “This new record is a starting point for the band, with absolute love and respect for the last 20 years — it was time to scrap some things, release some baggage and forge a new path,” the singer-guitarist said. He continued, “(Bassist/percussionist) Matt and I have a clear vision for the future and it starts now. We recorded a Sparta record with an ensemble of friends, new and old alike, and couldn’t be h...

Dean Fertita is returning with a new solo album. The Queens of the Stone Age member will unveil Tropical Gothclub on November 4th via Third Man Records, and as a preview, he’s shared its lead single “Wheels Within Wheels” today. Known for his work in more garage rock-forward bands — QotSA, The Raconteurs, and The Dead Weather — Fertita has used Tropical Gothclub as his chance to branch out. After spending much of the pandemic recording demos with no clear goal or vision, the resulting final product exemplifies just how far his range spans. “Tropical Gothclub as a concept is futuristic nostalgia,” he says in a press release (are you there, Dua Lipa?). “Going through the seven stages of escapism, understanding the subliminal messages I’ve been sending and receiving to myself, ...
Manchester rapper Aitch has an album coming out soon, and his promotional team chose a sensitive spot for an advertisement. Following a social media uproar, Aitch has promised to “fix” a mural honoring Joy Division’s Ian Curtis that was painted over for an advertisement promoting his new album. The mural of Joy Division frontman Curtis was painted by the graffiti artist Akse P19 in 2020 in collaboration with the mental health awareness festival Headstock UK. Aske posted about his work being covered on Instagram, explaining that the mural was supported by the Manchester City Council and other organizations as a mental health awareness initiative. “It doesn’t take much common sense to understand that this mural should have remained for what it represented and stood for,” the artist said. While the band never shared an official diagnosis, de la Rocha’s friend, the photographer Glen E. Friedman, recently revealed that the rapper tore his Achilles. “I went to see my good friend Zack (with his torn Achilles) perform last night at Madison Square Garden, one of the most hallowed venues in the modern world,” Friedman wrote on Instagram. Just as Rage Against the Machine finished that fateful Chicago concert with de la Rocha sitting down, the band completed the rest of their North American tour (wrapping up tonight, August 14th, with another show at the Garden) with their leader seated at the front of the ...
