Soccer Mommy has announced a new album called Sometimes, Forever. The third LP from Sophie Allison arrives June 24th via Loma Vista, while first single “Shotgun” is available to stream now. After working with indie producer Gabe Wax for 2018’s Clean and 2020’s color theory, Soccer Mommy enlisted Daniel Lopatin, the electronic producer behind Oneohtrix Point Never, for Sometimes, Forever. The album picks up where color theory left off, blending lush synths with Allison’s perennial fixation with 2000s pop. The record gets its title from the concept that neither sorrow nor happiness is permanent — that our strongest emotions feel like they’ll last forever, but quickly get brushed aside by something new. “Sorrow and emptiness will pass, but they will always come back ...
beabadoobee’s sophomore album is on the way. Entitled Beatopia, it’s due out on July 15th via Dirty Hit. As part of today’s announcement, our 2021 Rookie of the Year has also shared the album’s lead single, “Talk,” and mapped out a 2022 tour in North America and the UK Beatopia’s title is pulled from the fantastical, personal world that beabadoobee’s Bea Kristi devised in her imagination as a seven-year-old, and has kept close to her heart to this day. Across the record’s 14 tracks, Bea weaves together elements of fuzzy rock, homey singer-songwriter, psychedelia, midwest emo, and straightforward pop. “Talk” exemplifies Bea’s versatility, drawing upon her tried-and-true blend of pop-rock. This article originally ran in 2017 and has been updated. Ever felt overwhelmed by an artist’s extensive back catalog? Been meaning to check out a band, but you just don’t know where to begin? In 10 Songs is here to help, offering a crash course and entry point into the daunting discographies of iconic artists of all genres. This is your first step toward fandom. Take it. Isn’t it frustrating not being able to box something in? Not being able to name it because the goddamn thing is so busy evolving that it slips through your fingers? Sure, they might be a bunch of cartoon characters, but there’s always been something a little darker than meets the eye going on with Gorillaz. They’re pockmarked and weathered, garish, rough around the edges, the residents of Banksy’s Dismaland as counterpoin...
It’s no secret Johnny Marr enjoyed his time in Modest Mouse from 2006 to 2009. In a new interview with Spin reflecting upon the 15th anniversary of We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, Modest Mouse’s frontman Isaac Brock revealed they’ve (remotely) reunited with Marr to work on new material together. “We’ve already started working on some stuff together,” Brock said. “We just finished a song, ‘Rivers of Rivers’ — actually I think it’s just ‘Rivers of…’ — but it’s in a pen-pal sort of way. International travel isn’t what it once was at the moment.” Marr added, “I played on that new Modest Mouse song, and there are a couple of other things knocking around that Isaac’s writing. As Isaac said, air travel isn’t quite what it was. But hopefully, when the world tilts back on its axis, I’ll be ...
Beck played a concert in Nashville last night, so naturally, local resident Jack White made an appearance. Rather than coming out to sing a song with Beck, however, White pretended to be him, crashing the show with a quick rendition of Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping.” Watch the cover go down below. Video posted to White’s Third Man Records Instagram account sees the artist head on stage at The Basement East and introduce himself as Beck. “I’d like to do one of my favorite Beck songs from the 1990s that I wrote,” White says, putting on his best Southern accent. He then goes into a countrified mashup of “Tubthumping” and The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” before the real Beck stands up and stops the fun. “What are you doing, Jack?” Beck asks. “You asked for some nail clippers. I went ou...
Soft Cell have revealed *Happiness Not Included, their first studio album in nearly two decades, has been pushed back to May 6th. To tide fans over until then, the British pop duo have shared the new single “Purple Zone,” an ’80s dream-team collaboration with Pet Shop Boys. “Purple Zone” blends the best of both Soft Cell and Pet Shop Boys, layering a dazzling synth riff and dance floor-ready beat with anthemic vocals. The track laments feeling stuck in the monotony of everyday mundanities: “Let’s get out of this life/ I’m afraid and alone,” goes the chorus. “Paralyzed in the purple zone.” The music video for “Purple Zone,” directed by Yassa Khan, centers around a cast of different people going about their conventional schedules: working at a restaurant, doing laundry, cutting hair. These p...

Greta Van Fleet have decided to postpone the remainder of their spring US tour as band member Jake Kiszka continues to struggle with pneumonia. The guitarist is home after spending four days in the hospital, but the “healing process is long and slower than anticipated.” Originally, both Jake and his twin brother Josh (lead vocals) fell ill last week, forcing Greta Van Fleet to postpone a show in Flint, Michigan, one of five planned gigs in a row in their home state. Then the band announced that Josh had mostly recovered but that Jake was hospitalized with pneumonia, resulting in the postponement of two more shows. Now, the rest of the Spring jaunt has been called off. As it stands, Greta Van Fleet only played the first three shows on what was supposed to be a 13-date outing, including the ...
For a band still very much defined by the crunchy alt-pop of their very first album (and by the departures from that sound on their classic follow-up), Weezer has used its unlikely second and third decades as a band to practice a surprising amount of eclecticism. For Decade Two (roughly 2003 through 2013), this translated to never knowing whether a Weezer song would be pop-rock bliss or appalling disaster, leaving only the certainty that any given album would have at least several tracks’ worth of each. But since 2014 or so, the band has seemed less defiantly scattershot in their experiments. Their albums still come out at a steady clip, but they feel more sonically and thematically cohesive — without sacrificing their playfulness. Appropriate for its debut in a season of blooming, the ban...
Will Butler has announced his departure from Arcade Fire. Butler, a core member of the veteran indie rock band, shared the news ahead of the band’s show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on Saturday. “I left at the end of last year, after the new record was complete,” Butler wrote on Twitter. “There was no acute reason beyond that I’ve changed—and the band has changed—over the last almost 20 years. Time for new things.” Related Video Butler added that he was working on a new solo record and composing music for a play by David Adjmi. He also assured fans that Arcade Fire was “still my friends and family,” and thanked “anyone who’s come out to AF shows, or bought a record, or loves our music. It’s meaningful to be part of your lives. Thank you to the crew, staff, management, label people, bands,...
