NGO calls for prosecution of security operatives who torture suspects

Access to Justice, a non-governmental organisation that focuses on judicial reforms, has called for the prosecution of security operatives who torture suspects. The NGO on Monday released a statement signed by Joseph Otteh, its convener, and Deji Ajare, project director, to commemorate the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Access to Justice said despite the fact that the Anti-Torture Act 2017 prohibits the torture of suspects, security agencies in Nigeria still engage in “brutal and inhumane tactics”. ‘Armed robbers’ involved in ghastly motor accident in Ogun

Three suspected armed robbers on Saturday were involved a ghastly motor accident at Ode-Remo, Ogun State, while escaping with a car they allegedly snatched at gunpoint. Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Ogun police spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday. Oyeyemi said the suspects were escaping with a Toyota Camry car which they snatched at gunpoint in Ondo state. Police: Jigawa man foils kidnap attempt by fake NDLEA operatives

The Police Command in Jigawa has arrested three kidnap suspects in Hadejia Local Government Area of the state, the command spokesperson, ASP Lawan Shiisu, has said. Shiisu, in a statement in Dutse on Wednesday, said the suspects were arrested after they allegedly attempted to kidnap one Cyprian Okechukwu on May 31. Kaduna: Police arrest one after shoot out with bandits

Operatives of the Kaduna Police Command have arrested a suspected bandit around Kudaru forest in Saminaka, Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State and intercepted a Volkswagen vehicle and AK47 rifle. The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Muhammed Jalige, in a statement he released on behalf of the Police Commissioner, Umar Muri, said the suspect identified as Bello Abubakar was arrested during a shoot out. CDHR calls for release of abducted Ebonyi children

Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has urged the police and sister agencies to secure the unconditional release of the seven Ebonyi children abducted by suspected hoodlums at Enyigba community. The children were abducted from their respective homes at Enyigba community in Abakaliki Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi by unknown persons, following alleged renewed conflict over a land dispute with Enyibichiri community in Ikwo LGA. A statement signed by the state secretary of CDHR, Jeremiah Oyibe, on Tuesday in Abakaliki, urged the police to ensure the safe and unconditional release of the seven abductees. The Rivers State Police Command has appealed to Governor Nyesom Wike not to lift the night time curfew imposed in the wake of attacks on security formations and operatives in the state. Spokesman of the State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, made the appeal during a chat with newsmen in Port Harcourt, the state capital. Omoni said the curfew has helped the police and other security agencies respond timely to distress calls, adding that security threats have reduced in the state since the curfew was imposed over a fortnight ago. “The curfew was imposed essentially to arrest the trend of attacks on police. Gunmen attack police station, kill cop in Akwa Ibom

Gunmen on Sunday attacked a police station in the Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State and shot dead a mobile police officer. It was gathered that the officer was killed in the early hours of Sunday during a gun battle with the hoodlums which lasted several minutes.
