Jr and Avant Arte to Release a Limited-Edition Print Based on His Milano Centrale Installation

Milan's Central Station is busy throughout the year, but this past week, it saw an influx of local and international visitors who descended on the capital of Lombardy for Salone del Mobile and those traveling to the nearby Venice Biennale. On view at the entrance of the station is a massive multi-paneled display by elusive French artist JR, who created a trompe l’oeil effect of a cavernous terrain that forks directly through the Ulisse Stacchini=designed building. In collaboration with Avant Arte, who recently worked with Javier Calleja and George Condo, the London-based studio will release a new print based off of JR's Milanese artwork. Aptly titled to reflect the installation, La Nascita (The Birth) blurs the boundaries of time and space, honoring the legacy of Milan's historic train sta...

Maurizio Cattelan to Unveil First Gallery Exhibition in Over 20 Years

For an artist so frequently in the headlines, think the banana peel at Art Basel or a morbidly hanging figure of himself in Milan, Maurizio Cattelan (suprisingly) has not staged his own gallery solo exhibition in over 20 years. That will change later this month, as the Italian artist will take over Gagosian's 522 West 21st Street location in New York for a new show entitled Sunday. While details are still largely under wraps, Cattelan will use his Gagosian debut as an examination into the contradictions of American society and culture. Curated by Italian writer Francesco Bonami, Sunday coincides with a series of works that he will present during the forthcoming Venice Biennale at the Holy See Pavilion, presented in collaboration with the Vatican church. Whether one agrees with Bonami's sta...

Javier Calleja Ponders on Mischief and Daydreams in New Prints

Javier Calleja's charming cartoon characters explore the possibilities and difficulties of life. Following a series of past collaborations, the Spanish artist reunites with London's Avant Arte to release two new prints that bring the proverbial angel and devil on everyone's shoulder into your home decor.Released as both individual prints and a diptych set, it wasn't me (2024) is centered around mischief that sometimes teeters between innocence and malice; while Floating (2024) taps into the limitless potential of daydreams. Viewed together, Calleja bridges a "simple but not easy" dialogue around each character, as if paused from a moment in a story. Each print is crafted using a 15 color engraving process, involving four photopolymer etching plates that is finished with a final color and h...

Palestinian Voices Shine Despite Absence of National Pavilion at Venice Biennale

Demonstrations arose against Israel’s involvement in the Venice Biennale, even though the Israel Pavilion stayed closed. Palestine couldn't host a pavilion as Italy, like many EU countries, doesn't recognize it. The curator of this year's edition, Adriano Pedrosa, selected 30 events for the Biennale and Palestinian artists and gallerists alike wondered whether there would be projects dedicated to Palestinian heritage and culture.South West Bank: Landworks, Collective Action and Sound is one official collateral project approved by Pedrosa that highlights Palestinian voices -- spearheaded by Artists and Allies of Hebron and the Dar Jacir Center for Art and Research. The installment showcases various Palestinian artists, including Emily Jacir and Jumanna Manna, at Palazzo Contarini Polignac. ...

Coinciding with the ongoing Salone del Mobile, Triennale di Milano is hosting one of the largest retrospective exhibitions to date on the late artist, designer, architect and editor, Alessandro Mendini. Produced in collaboration with Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Io sono un drago (I am a Dragon) is a self-portrait of the many faces of one of Italy's preeminent creative forces of the past century, featuring over 400 works, spanning painting, sculpture, installation, film, drawings, as well as architectural and interior design work and his impact across publications Modo, Casabella and Domus. The term creative polymath has become somewhat overused in the present, but Mendini, alongside fellow Italian giants, such as Ettore Sottsass, defied categorization as they produced some of...

‘Even The Heart Skips A Beat’ in RETNA’s Latest Screen Print

Marquis Lewis, better known by his artist alias RETNA, has worked with Print Them All to release a new one-color screen print that draws on his quixotic signature script. Entitled Even The Heart Skips A Beat, the Los Angeles-based artist's practice is largely inspired by various calligraphic styles around the world, from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and cuneiform to Hebrew, Arabic and his own background in graffiti. Mysterious but instantly recognizable, RETNA's imprint can be seen plastered on walls around the world. He quickly ascended on art radars for first tagging over popular high fashion labels to the point where he ironically started collaborating with the very entities he covered over — Louis Vuitton and Chanel being some of the many brands that have tapped RETNA to imbue his p...

Remarkably Preserved “Black Room” of Frescoes Excavated in Pompeii

A remarkably preserved banquet hall of frescoes was recently excavated in the Ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Dating back nearly 2,000 years, the 50 foot long by 19 foot wide room was once used as an entertainment space, where cordial gatherings and conversations were believed to have taken place. Dubbed "The Black Room", due to the black walls that were meant to prevent the smoke of the burning candle light from being seen, the room featured elaborately painted depictions of mythological figures from the Trojan War, from Spartan princess Helen to Paris, prince of Troy."The mythological couples provided ideas for conversations about the past and life, only seemingly of a merely romantic nature," said Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the Director of the Archaeological park of Pompeii. "In reality, they ...
