Ghada Amer Recontextualizes QR Codes in New London Exhibition

Egyptian artist Ghada Amer has recontextualized the QR code in a new solo exhibition at London's Goodman Gallery. Born in Cairo and now based in New York City, Amer is typically known for creating striking mixed-media artwork that centers the female body as a "battleground" to explore themes pertaining identity, sexuality and Islamic culture. In QR CODES REVISITED, however, she tapped into the ubiquity of what has now become a common form of language to meditate on how we universally communicate across cultures in the present. Mapped across the gallery space are a series of new woven tapestries that appear like mazes made of patchwork lettering in both English and Arabic. Hidden beneath each geometric layer are messages of prominent feminist voices from Eastern and Western activists — such...

Jean Jullien Releases Functional Whale Sculpture

A year on from their collaborative chair sculpture, French artist Jean Jullien and Case Studyo are back with another (functional) edition called La Baleine (The Whale). Playing in line with his whimsical two-dimensional illustrations, the porcelain artwork features a cheerful blue whale with a scribbly hand-drawn vibe with an open blow-hole that can hold pens, colored pencils, flowers or whatever else that comes to mind. For Jullien, who frequently paints animals and scenes associated to the beach, the whale represents a symbol of grace, grandeur and unbounded creativity. The hybrid sculpture was made to play on the metaphor of a whale's blowhole, "an emblem of exhaling and releasing creative energy", according to Case Studyo, where he invites his collectors to fill the whale with their ow...
