Brazil's Instituto Inhotim, located close to the city of Brumadinho, is home to one of the largest collections of contemporary art in Latin America. It is also now home to a new permanent gallery exclusively devoted to the work of acclaimed Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama.Aptly named, Galeria Yayoi Kusama will play host to several ethereal installations, including an Infinity Room entitled Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity (2009), which invites visitors into a deceptively simple space made of metal, glass and wood, that casts visitors' reflections across a sea of lights. Far less extravagant, but similarly luminescent, Kusama's I’m Here, But Nothing (2000) is also on view and features a living room with modest wood furnishings and sticker polka dots that are made to pop through a black l...
With Barbie front and center as it takes over the box office, the toymaker behind the popular intellectual property, Mattel, has never had more interest in its registered trademarked signature pink. One specific case of interest comes from British artist Stuart Semple who is both challenging and protesting the concept of "owning a color," through the release of a purchasable paint offering dubbed "Pinkie" -- which he says is the "barbiest pink."Pinkie has hit the art supply market as a high-quality acrylic resin that uses optical brighteners and fluorescent pigments. The offering is also seemingly a collectible work of art in itself, with a vibrant box that features a playful design reminiscent of the boxes the toys would come in, this includes a window and a "MAT-HEL" sticker to boot.In th...
Pablo Picasso famously once noted that it took him "four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.” Whether through wonder or a general naivety of the world, children are generally able to tap into an unconscious flow state that becomes increasingly more difficult with age. Growing up surrounded by folklore, Hungarian artist Szabolcs Bozó certainly subscribes to Picasso's observations, as he creates raw gestural characters that carry a childlike sense of fascination. In collaboration with Avant Arte, Bozó will release a new limited edition print entitled The Aquarium. Colorful and chaotic, the artwork is based off an original painting he created for the last Art Basel in Miami Beach, which was inspired by the coast, neon lights and architecture of Ocean Drive. Altho...
David Zwirner has announced representation of British choreographer and dancer, Sarah Michelson. Based in New York since 1991, Michelson's work comments on how the aesthetics of dance change in relation to sound, movement, architecture and various historical and cultural conditions. "I strive for truth and beauty as a dance maker," Michelson once noted, "attempting to make work that risks rejection based on its aesthetics and at its deepest structural core denies safety in favor of trying to understand through action, honestly questioning what is the very nature and value of my dance-making."Dance, and by extension, performance art, has been a vital genre of art history, both in the last century and long before. Yet most funding for performance art has come from nonprofit spaces. "The temp...

Manchester has stood as one of the UK’s main focal points for emerging talent for decades. From its musical heritage – spearheaded by the likes of Oasis and now the cheeky-chap rhymes of Moston’s Aitch – to the slew of food spots along the streets of Piccadilly, the 0161 is a melting pot for culture and community. It’s Manchester’s togetherness that gives its talent a pedestal to succeed on – and emerging artist and designer, Tomas Gittins, is proof of that. The 26-year-old currently stands as one of the most exciting artists in the city, with his “POORTRAITS” often being spotted around popular hotspots and independent exhibitions in the Rainy City. Having moved from his hometown of Macclesfield – a small town just outside of Manchester – to Cape Town in 2018, Gittins’ introverted time in ...
Rhymezlikedimez – aka Belgian artist Robin Velghe – tapped ToyQube for his first venture into the art collectible space. After the cloudy-headed character Puff hit a slew of high-end events in 2022 including Art Basel Miami and Paris Fashion Week, Rhymezlikedimez has shrunk Puff down – without removing any of his notable features – to a practical and more concise "Skate To The Sun" collectible.Puff is a resident of the dreamy Rhymezlikedimez universe: Velghe's otherworldly world full of alluring color and culture. While Puff's original form saw him at life-size proportions, the smaller iteration stands at just 10 inches tall. Donning his signature sky blue hoodie, oversized sunglasses and chunky yellow sneakers, Puff (and his apple) are comprised fully of vinyl, and his skateboard is cra...
Last year, acclaimed Los Angeles-based pop artist Kenny Scharf was honored by the New York Academy of Art at its 2022 Tribeca Ball Spring event, where he created a one-off mural for the institution. Colorful, loud and playful, Los Niños Y Las Niñas featured a medley of his frantic characters swirling one another in his signature palette of vibrant blues and pinks. A year on, Scharf has partnered up with the New York Academy of Art and Artspace to bring the mural to life in a form of a new screen print. The artwork is an exact replica of the original and will come signed and numbered by the artist.A meteoric figure in his own right, Scharf first arose on the scene in Manhattan's East Village back in the 1980s, alongside fellow pop artists in Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Whether ...
Pharrell's JOOPITER has announced "Holding Court," a charitable auction featuring previously unseen works by the influential artist Ernie Barnes. Barnes, a celebrated African American painter and former professional football player, gained significant recognition during the Civil Rights Movement for his distinctive "neo-mannerist" style, characterized by elongated and fluid figures in vibrant, dynamic paintings. Beyond his artistic talent, Barnes was known for his dedication to community, representation, and social justice. The proceeds from the auction will be entirely directed to the Yetunde Price Resource Center, a community-based organization co-founded by Isha Price, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams. The center provides trauma-informed programs and resources to individuals and fami...
Over the course of human history, civilization has always been caught in a state of flux, a tension that ebbs and flows between tradition and modernity. Nowhere is this thought perhaps most present in the technology that has guided us throughout and continues to change the way we experience daily life, as a result. A constant observer of culture, Chinese artist Cao Fei has dedicated the past 20 years to understanding what it means to be human amidst the rapid advancements ushered in by the 21st century. On view now at Sprüth Magers Berlin is a new solo exhibition where Fei transforms the entire gallery into an unworldly think-space that ruminates on the blurring lines between reality and the growing digital realm of the metaverse. Well-known for her elaborate scenography, each aspect of the...
When it comes to the world of football hooliganism, few clubs have carried such a tainted legacy as South London's Millwall F.C. Known as arguably the most hated club in the UK, the violent side of their supporters dates all the way back to the start of the last century against their still bitter London rivals, West Ham F.C. Countless of shameful incidents have occurred over the course of their 135 year history, including countless pitch invasions and missiles thrown pitch-side, brawls between opposing fans and the tragic murder of a West Ham supporter at the hands of one of Millwall's firms. While there is still a portion of Millwall fans that sometimes too proudly dip into this heritage, a new book, however, seeks to subvert the image of what the modern day Millwall supporter is today. C...
Holly Hendry is a British artist who is best known for creating site-specific installations and sculptures that probe into what lies beneath the surface. In the past, this approach has translated into a massive conveyer belt artwork at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, as well as a tumbling outdoor sculpture in Luxembourg, which she presented last year.Despite being from London, the artist hasn’t been commissioned to design a public sculpture in her home town, until now. Housed at The Artist's Garden atop the Temple Tube rooftop, Slackwater blends seamlessly with the exterior of any average building, but becomes sinuous and all the more perplexing as one walks around it. "I am really happy with the outcome [but] it is a strange moment, working quite intimately on something for so long and then...
