Jeffrey Gibson to Represent the U.S. Pavilion at 2024 Venice Biennale

Choctaw-Cherokee artist Jeffrey Gibson has been selected to represent the U.S. pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale. Born in Colorado and now based in Upstate New York, Gibson is the first Indigenous artist to be chosen for the honor and will create a number of monumental new installations for the event as part of an exhibition commissioned by the Portland Art Museum in Oregon and SITE Santa Fe in New Mexico.Defined by chromatic hits of color overlaid with haiku-like messaging, Gibson's artwork challenges the lack of Indigenous representation in visual culture. Not reserved to one particular medium, the artist utilizes a range of materials and subject matter, from glass, beads, steel and paint to American, Indigenous and Queer histories — resulting in artworks that exude the hybrid nature ...

Through the Lens: Art History Meets Football Kit Royalty in Louis Bever’s Intimate Portraiture

It may be ubiquitous these days to find one’s image plastered across a family living room, an Instagram feed or the endless scroll of our camera rolls. But for much of human history, only those who came from power and wealth had the means to have their portrait either painted or photographed.More than just a method of preservation, the classic genre of portraiture was a social and political tool to project one's status and influence — a device that was largely reserved for a select few. Namely, kings, queens, barons, dukes — the posh type who flaunted their influence through elaborate palaces, decor and of course, fashion. While it may be funny to see what was once in vogue hundreds of years in the past — think wigs, medici collars, breeches — future societies will likely have a similar ta...

Having launched in 2021, "Immersive Van Gogh" has exhibited across the world in cities, such as Toronto and New York — sparking a league of imitators and even being featured in the hit Netflix series, Emily in Paris. While the organizers of the event were able to sell over 250...

Wolfgang Tillmans Explores Simultaneous Experiences in Upcoming “Fold” Exhibition

David Zwirner is gearing up to launch "Fold Me," Wolfgang Tillmans' fourth solo exhibition at their gallery in New York. "Fold Me" features entirely new artwork by the artist, following his major retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Tillmans's work in "Fold Me" centers around the concept of folds, where the inside and outside converge, leaving physical imprints. He explores the interplay of chance and control, process and time, as he captures the act of seeing through photography. Bridget Riley Plays With Perception in Massive Wall Art Exhibition

Op Art pioneer Bridget Riley is showcasing a series of her emphatic wall paintings at Galerie Max Hetzler's Potsdamer Straße location in Berlin. The show will consist of 13 works in total, more than half of which have been loaned out from public collections from around the world. For over 60 years, Riley has interrogated what it means to see. By distilling perception to its constituent elements — color and shape, light and shadow, composition and depth — the British artist has challenged the traditions of painting and the very notion of representation. By the late-1960s, Riley had started experimenting with the relationship between minimal color palettes on a colossal scale — an inquiry that persists to this day. Each wall artwork looks deceptively simple, but reveals itself to the onlooke...

British painter Pam Evelyn is the latest to join the list and will be the youngest ever to do so.At just 27 years of age, Evelyn only received her master's degree last year from London's Royal College of Art, but has quickly ascended up the fine art world like few others in recent memory through a visceral approach to abstract painting that is rooted in "instinct and impulse," as she's previously stated in the past.
