It's believed that the pizza, or at least the one that we recognize today, was invented in the 19th century. But the true date of our beloved pies may have come far earlier, as archaeologists recently uncovered a depiction of a pizza in a Roman fresco in Pompeii. According to a report leading the excavation, however, most of the "characteristic ingredients" of a pizza are missing, "namely tomatoes and mozzarella." The quasi-pizza or foccaccia shown is also accompanied by wine, fruit, dough and various spices — all styled in a still life on a silver platter. Culturally speaking, Naples, despite a 2022 report by The Greek Times, is largely attributed as the birthplace of the flatbread pizza — making the latest Pompeii discovery an important historical connection. “Pompeii never ceases to ama...
Next month, Gagosian will showcase a unique new digital sculpture by Swiss visual artist Urs Fischer at its Beverly Hills outpost. Entitled Denominator, Fischer, who recently transformed the neighboring Marciano Art Foundation last year, tapped into the proliferation of images found across the history of television advertisements. The 12-foot cube displays fragmentary images and clips sourced from international television commercials as early as the 1950s to the present day. In particular, Fischer utilized the latest advancements in AI to deconstruct individual shots, which are subsequently grouped according to color and theme — resulting in mesmerizing telecasts that probe into the power broadcasting ads have in swaying human consciousness. "This collective human experiment—public relation...

There are a great many things that you shouldn't do on holiday. Locals usually hate when tourists are loud and obnoxious or stop every second to take a picture, blocking troves of people on their daily commute. While those are only minor blips, it goes without saying that you should never etch your name into a UNESCO World Heritage site, unless of course you enjoy jail time and hefty fines. Last week, a tourist was filmed defacing the Roman Colosseum by etching the words, “Ivan + Hayley ‘23” on a columned arch. A video originally posted to Reddit shows what appears to be Ivan and Hayley conducting the act, while a stranger yells out "asshole" to them. Ivan only smiled back.He may not be smiling much longer, as the punishment for the offense can be upwards of €20,000 EUR / $21,923 USD and p...
In anticipation of his upcoming solo exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco (ICA SF), Patrick Martinez has created a new mural for a basketball court in the city's Dogpatch neighborhood. The project was part of a restoration effort for the Alive & Free Good Tidings basketball court and commissioned by the ICA SF in collaboration with Bay Area Mural Project and the Warriors Community Foundation. The Los Angeles-based visual artist drew from his Pee-Chee painting series, which nods to the illustrations school kids draw in classic rule-bound notebooks, to create towering young adults — some dressed in graduation attire, while others are outstretched to score the winning basket. The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne is showcasing a unique retrospective exhibition on the acclaimed French painter, Pierre Bonnard. Presented as part of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series, the show includes over 100 artworks from Bonnard's career that have been loaned out from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, along with various institutions across the world. While Bonnard's work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the past, what sets this show apart is the way in which it is presented. Made in collaboration with Iranian-French architect and designer, India Mahdavi, visitors will be able to figuratively walk into the colorful scenes of Modern France at the turn of the 19th century — from the picturesque south to the streets of Paris, the latter of which he once...
After announcing his new Along the Way body of work — a series based on "imagination, exploration, curiosity and the excitement that comes along with venturing into unknown territory" — in March, Louis De Guzman has announced the second release from the series: a circular screenprint dubbed Race Against Time. The second release from Along the Way after March's Above It All painting and corresponding screenprint, Race Against Time discards the aerial themes of its predecessor in favor of a more nautical-tinged look, but one that boasts the bold color palette and signature "geometric abstraction" style that De Guzman's work has become known for.Two boats traverse a turbulent ocean in Race Against Time while a duo of clocks tick away above, a potential metaphor for the constant, occasionally ...
American artist Doug Aitken looks to reconnect our senses to the natural world in a new solo exhibition entitled HOWL. Housed at Galerie Eva Presenhuber in Zurich, each room in the show resembles a different landscape and is accompanied by sculptural artworks that guide visitors throughout the space. The Los Angeles-based artist is also debuting a new film installation that examines the lives of residents from a barren desert town that relied on oil drilling and excavation as its primary industry. While the film isn't necessarily a documentary, Aitken weaves a portrait of the past, in which the inhabitants speak of their ideal utopia and visions of the future. Certain shows are 'immersive' across advertisements, but will have you heading towards the exit quicker than you would have liked. Alternatively, there are exhibitions that have the power to completely remove you from your sense of time and space, and in effect, readjust your outlook on the outside world. The Great Animal Orchestra by American musician and soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause falls under the latter category. The exhibition first debuted in 2016 and was commissioned by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain as a study of the natural world. Returning on view, The Great Animal Orchestra has touched down at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Over the past five decades, Krause has collected 5,000 hours of recordings of natural environments, including at least 15,000 terre...
If you you were walking past the High Line in Manhattan last night, you may have noticed an unusual character overhead. The yellow comical figure somewhat resembles Bert from Sesame Street, except without the unibrow, hair and a slightly rounder face. The sculpture belongs to New York-based artist Danny Cole and it's not quite clear whether he was commissioned to place the work on the balcony of the luxury apartment. First reported by ARTnews, Cole and the team who helped him install the nearly one-ton sculpture, were quickly approached by local police on trespassing charges. While the artist hasn't been able to reveal the intent behind the work, for legal reasons, he went on to state in an interview that he simply went out at night with a group of friends "dropped it on this balcony with ...
