In each, visitors can traverse a visual biography of the artist — from his euphoric poems, paintings and sculptures created in his formative years growing up in Northern California in the '60s and '70s, to his cosmic and haunting depictions of New York City made in the decades that followed. Italian Archaeologists Are Using AI Robots to Piece Together the Past

As the art world and AI continue to blend, so too have the efforts of archaeologists in unearthing the remnants of the old world. In Italy, experts are utilizing a new system called RePAIR, code named for "Reconstructing the Past: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics meet Cultural Heritage", to help piece together ancient shards found across the country. Funded by the European Union and launched in 2021, RePAIR works like a mechanical puzzle solver. In that, the machine is geared to “develop a ground-breaking technology to virtually eliminate one of the most labor-intensive and frustrating steps in archaeological research, namely the physical reconstruction of shattered artworks," according to a release on the project's website. Amongst the tasks being worked on, RePAIR is reassemlbing a 2...

Ukraine Releases Banksy Postal Stamp

Ukraine has issued a new postal stamp featuring a Banksy mural depicting a young boy body slamming Russian president Vladimir Putin. The release mimics an original artwork that appeared on a house in the town of Borodyanka, just outside Kyiv, and comes just a year after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.BBC News reports that droves of people waited in line to purchase the stamp, which also contains an expletive reflecting Ukrainian sentiment. "We thought that this exact stamp, this exact painting would be the best representation of what every Ukrainian feels about our enemy," said Ihor Smilianskyi, the head of Ukrainian Postal Service, in an interview with Reuters.Borodyanka was overtaken by Russian forces within the first few days of the conflict. After Ukraine regained con...

Sculpture of Picasso’s Corpse Steals the Show at Madrid’s ARCO Fair

Madrid's ARCO contemporary art fair is well underway and one of the most talked about works on view is a sculptural corpse of Pablo Picasso. Created by Spanish artist Eugenio Merino in collaboration with Los Interventores and ADN Gallery, Aquí Murió Picasso (Picasso Died Here), 2017, features the larger-than-life artist laying on a plinth in his signature Breton shirt and linen trousers. The sculpture is exaggerated on multiple levels. Firstly, the work measures 6 feet long, while Picasso was actually 5 feet and 4 inches tall. Additionally, Merino and the curators involved looked to critique the spectacle that has become of modern day art fairs — where selfies and tourism have arguably taken over the experience of viewing and buying art. Antwaun Sargent’s Helmut Lang Exhibition Examines What It Means To Be a Cowboy

"Helmut Lang Seen by Antwaun Sargent: Cowboy" officially launched at the Hannah Traore Gallery during New York Fashion Week as a response to Helmut Lang's FW23 collection. In 2004, Helmut Lang printed the word "COWBOY" in reverse on the inside of a classic white cotton tee, seemingly suggesting that whoever wore it is in fact, a cowboy. Over the years, the narrative has been romanticized to take on different meanings far from the realities of the eighteenth-century cowboy. This evolution serves as the inspiration for Antwaun Sargent's latest exhibition which features seven artists including Turiya Adkins, Awol Erizku, American Artist, Devin B. Johnson, Justen Leroy, Daniel Obasi, and Quay Quinn Wolf. Nearly 20 years after the release of the now-infamous "YOꓭWOƆ" tee, the artists respond to ...

Pen & Paper: Jaedoo Lee

Jaedoo Lee’s mind is always turning. When faced with creative block, he chooses to plow through by welcoming, rather than dismissing, the rotator belt of ideas that flow from one corner of his head to the next. Sometimes this involves taking a break from client work altogether to work on passion projects that will allow him to reassess his creative process.Born in South Korea and now based in New York City, the artist, illustrator and animator is notably inspired by comics and creates work that can best be defined by poppy hues, subtle textures and a thin black line-stroke that gives form to peculiar people, animals and objects that live between reality and fantasy.Several years ago, Lee was included as a recipient of The One Club For Creativity’s Young Guns 18 class, which honors people 3...

‘People Are Strange’ in George Condo’s Latest Exhibition

To commemorate its second location in Los Angeles, Hauser & Wirth unveiled a new solo exhibition by acclaimed American artist George Condo. As a nod to the City of Angels, People Are Strange takes its title from The Doors' 1967 song of the same name, where Condo explores contrasting themes, such as beauty and ugliness, in his latest suite of paintings.Located in a reconverted automobile showroom, the work on view was all made within the last year and features bizarre characters, vigorous brushstrokes and a general sense of hysteria from canvas-to-canvas. This controlled chaos that runs concurrent in each work is a way in which the artist speaks to the contemporary moment and the socio-political tension across the world.
