I seem to be drawn to luxurious designer pieces, sumptuous fabrics, sophisticated silhouettes, elevated styles—that all tend to carry a hefty price tag. In other words, I have expensive taste but a small budget. Luckily, however, that doesn’t make shopping any less fun. As we went on our weekly (okay, daily) pilgrimage to our favourite retail sites, we were stopped in our tracks by three brands in particular. All high street, it’s Mango, COS and Zara that piqued our interest as soon as we entered the ‘new in’ sections. With fresh autumn buys coming in thick and fast, this is one of the best times of the year to snap up items that work not only for the new season, but many seasons to come as they’re often more transitional and therefore easier to slot into your looks during any given period. Skirts have gone to extremes this year. With the mini going micro (thanks to Miu Miu) and even maxis making a return, the world is your oyster when it comes to which style to choose. But as autumn is fast approaching, the maxi seems more appealing right now. Everyone from my grandma to my niece is obsessed with Marks and Spencer (albeit the latter is mostly hooked on Colin the Caterpillar mini cakes). Clearly, it’s this broad appeal that makes it a conversation starter. Think back to times you’ve been out with your friends; you dutifully compliment one on their outfit, to which they relish in revealing the piece in question came from M&S. It’s happened, right? The weather may be indecisive, but we’ve made the decision to start incorporating a bit of autumn into our looks. Be it cowboy boots teamed with a linen dress, a trench with our miniskirt look or the most recent hero item: a knit tank top. The basic has been the most loyal item in our wardrobes for a few seasons, and this autumn, we’re not letting go. As much as I’d like to keep every single item I’ve ever owned for the rest of my days, my life in New York City simply doesn’t allow for it.
