When it comes to shopping for clothes, I’ll admit that my sartorial preferences don’t always reflect my available bank balance. I seem to be drawn to luxurious designer pieces, sumptuous fabrics, sophisticated silhouettes, elevated styles—that all tend to carry a hefty price tag. In other words, I have expensive taste but a small budget. Luckily, however, that doesn’t make shopping any less fun. In fact, I love that satisfying (and smug) feeling when I find a chic, new season trend or style that looks pricey but doesn’t cost a fortune. So today, I want to share the trends I’m most excited about buying this autumn which feed my penchant for luxurious-looking styles but don’t won’t break the bank. Keep scrolling to add these affordable yet elevated autumn trend...
News flash: The new season is upon us. But before you cry into one of your last iced lattes of the summer, I have a silver lining for you: new season = new wardrobe. After months of sweating in places I didn’t know one could sweat (my forearms—weird, no?) I can’t wait to step into autumnal dressing. Sequins, suits, cashmere, boots—I can’t get enough! Heading into the office brings opportunities for layers and texture. My work wardrobe consists of a sea of cosy knits layered on top of cotton shirts and leather trench coats. And let’s not forget that as we part ways with weekends filled with festivals, we welcome party season. And boy, oh, boy! This year is our year for extroverted, unapologetic, high-octane glamour. The bomber jacket is one of those rare fail-safe pieces that never go out of style. It might fade from the spotlight now and again, but it usually takes just one designer or brand to reignite the spark and breathe new life into the tried-and-tested outerwear style. This time around, The Frankie Shop is to credit for the revival. We wrote a whole piece praising the NYC label’s sell-out Astra Shell Jacket, a cult buy we’re pretty sure stirred up a fresh wave of flight jacket appreciation. And for autumn/winter AW22, all signs (and catwalks) are pointing to the trend being bigger than ever. From Givenchy’s ultra-cropped shapes to waist-synching designs by Sacai and Prada, the runways communicated it clear as day: bomber jackets are having a major moment. What is it about ...
I just want to kick this off be saying I can’t be held accountable for any purchases you may make after reading this. Because, the truth is, these influencers will influence you with their autumn wishlists. As someone who has already fallen victim to this (my pal @bubblyaquarius has made me want the latest Arket striped jumper), it’s easy to fall hard for these fresh new-season pieces. To pick out some of the best buys around, I got in touch with some of my influencer friends to see what has caught their eye at the moment. With an eclectic mix of styles between these six stylish women, you can bet they all choose from an array of different high street and designer brands. But one thing I did notice from the items they choose is, there’s a colour trend that’s set to be huge for autumn:...
As we went on our weekly (okay, daily) pilgrimage to our favourite retail sites, we were stopped in our tracks by three brands in particular. All high street, it’s Mango, COS and Zara that piqued our interest as soon as we entered the ‘new in’ sections. With fresh autumn buys coming in thick and fast, this is one of the best times of the year to snap up items that work not only for the new season, but many seasons to come as they’re often more transitional and therefore easier to slot into your looks during any given period. To break it down for you, Mango is the destination right now for stand-out animal prints, designer-inspired shoes (you have to see the crystal pair we’ve found), and non-boring staples such as leather jackets with tassels and shirts with embro...
Skirts have gone to extremes this year. With the mini going micro (thanks to Miu Miu) and even maxis making a return, the world is your oyster when it comes to which style to choose. But as autumn is fast approaching, the maxi seems more appealing right now. You may remember styling a denim iteration in the ’00s with a disk belt (how could we ever forget them?), and now they’re back. No, thankfully not disk belts, but denim maxi skirts have certainly been spotted recently—they seem to be particularly good partners to a silky top. And bias-cut slip styles are also being worn by the likes of Monikh with a shirt tied at the waist. The hard part isn’t actually choosing which maxi skirt to go for this time around, it’s which top to wear them with. Th...
Everyone from my grandma to my niece is obsessed with Marks and Spencer (albeit the latter is mostly hooked on Colin the Caterpillar mini cakes). Clearly, it’s this broad appeal that makes it a conversation starter. Think back to times you’ve been out with your friends; you dutifully compliment one on their outfit, to which they relish in revealing the piece in question came from M&S. It’s happened, right? The funny thing is M&S has a proven track record of delivering on fashion-forward staples; there should be no shock and awe at the fact they (or you) have bought something good from there. Yet everyone considers it to be their secret source for expensive-looking finds. Although I’d like for us all to remain in this little bubble, ...
When it comes to brands on the high street, we’re pretty well versed in the specific products each label does best. While Zara is the destination for dresses, Mango always has expensive-looking looking shoes and M&S, well, M&S of course has the best jeans. With most styles coming in inclusive sizes and three different lengths—short, regular and long —you can almost guarantee you’ll find “the one.” Not only this, the high street hero is also a go-to when it comes to knitwear (if you haven’t tried the cashmere, you absolutely should.) And they’ve also recently started creating more dresses that our fashion editors would wear on repeat. So, basically, what we’re trying to say is, M&S is in fact the do-it-all store. The weather may be indecisive, but we’ve made the decision to start incorporating a bit of autumn into our looks. Be it cowboy boots teamed with a linen dress, a trench with our miniskirt look or the most recent hero item: a knit tank top. The basic has been the most loyal item in our wardrobes for a few seasons, and this autumn, we’re not letting go. Instead of cooler cotton iterations, we’ll be opting for fine knit tanks, vests and cami tops to go with all our new-season trousers and skirts. We know it’s hard to think about knitwear while the weather is muggy, but this is the easy way to dip a toe into autumn without going full-on cashmere (just yet). The best leather jackets can be found in many places. They are the ultimate jacket for looking super cool when you need to take your outfit from zero to 100. Not only does such a key piece journey with you, looking good no matter what the trend climate may dictate, but the right one will also get better with age. Remember that the best leather jackets get softer, but they retain their shape. (Although, leather does stretch a little after the first few wears, so buy a snug size if you want a close fit.) Naturally, finding The One is hard—it’s a commitment. We’ve edited the current options with a ferocious, hard-to-please eye, bringing you the greatest leather jackets you can buy right now, which makes for fortuitous timing, seeing as they were a big deal on the A/W 22 ...
As much as I’d like to keep every single item I’ve ever owned for the rest of my days, my life in New York City simply doesn’t allow for it. I have, at best, 500 square feet to work with, and while clothes, shoes, and bags take up 99% of my thoughts every day, I don’t particularly want them to own that much space in my apartment too. So, to compensate, I have to cycle out my wardrobe—minus basics, of course—a lot. And with fall fast approaching, I’m gearing up for yet another refresh. Luckily, this autumn’s trend selection is shockingly good, so coming up with pieces to get rid of in order to make room for it wasn’t all that difficult. But still, waving goodbye to trends that have served you well for months or even years is...
