BTS’ ‘Dynamite’ Explodes With RIAA Triple-Platinum Status

Following its release in August 2020, “Dynamite” became BTS’ first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and logged three weeks at the summit. With that feat, BTS, which comprises members J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, RM, Suga and V, became the first all-South Korean group to lead the all-genre Hot 100. The honors don’t end there. RIAA certifies BTS’ “BE” for platinum (1 million U.S. units) and “Life Goes On” for gold (for 500,000 U.S. units). RIAA’s gold and platinum awards have “come to stand as a benchmark of success for any artist,” the trade body explains in a statement. How the Grammys Upgraded Its Voting System for the 2022 Awards

Through the voting portal, the Academy has increased the personalization of each user’s ballot. Voters can customize their ballot by clicking on the fields in which they choose to vote. That way, they can easily see and browse through the categories that are most relevant to them.  Voters’ ballots now offer a search box to find the field, artist or category they are interested in. Using the search tool, voting members can more easily maneuver through the 22,000 entries on the ballot.   The upgraded ballots offer more flexibility. Voters may select and de-select categories before they make their final submission. Voters are free to change their minds on which categories and fields they wish to vote in. The porta...

Olivia Rodrigo Leads 2021 American Music Awards Nominations: Full List

The AMAs added three new categories this year: favorite trending song (with nominees from TikTok on the year’s most viral songs), favorite gospel artist (to go along with the returning favorite inspirational artist) and favorite Latin duo or group. With this year’s continued expansion of the Latin field, there are now as many awards for Latin (five) as there are for pop and country. That’s remarkable because there weren’t any categories for Latin at the American Music Awards until 1998, when Julio Iglesias took the first award for favorite Latin artist. This year, there are four awards each for hip-hop and R&B and one each for rock, inspirational, gospel and dance/electronic. Three categories that were on last year’s nominations list are MIA on this year’s list: favorite social artist ...

Mort Sahl, Top Comedian & Host of First Grammy Awards Ceremony, Dies at 94

At a time when comics often traded in tired jokes about their mothers-in-law, Sahl demonstrated that he had read the paper. Mort Sahl, one of the most successful and influential comedians of the 1950s and 1960s, died Tuesday at age 94. On top of many other things, Sahl owns a little piece of Grammy history. On May 4, 1959, Sahl emceed the presentation of the first Grammy Awards in the Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. The black-tie dinner and awards presentation, which was not televised, drew such guests as Henry Mancini (whose Music From Peter Gunn won album of the year), Frank Sinatra (who was the night’s leading nominee with six nods but won only for best album cover), Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Gene Autry, Johnny Mercer and Andre Previn. Sahl was al...

Save the Music to Honor Jesse Collins

Save the Music Foundation has selected Jesse Collins as this year’s #MusicSaves honoree. The live-event veteran — a founder and CEO of Jesse Collins Entertainment who has spent more than two decades in the industry — is being singled out “for his achievements as a trailblazing executive and one of the most visible and successful producers in the industry,” per the organization. The award follows a banner year for Collins that saw him credited on such productions as the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show, the Academy Awards, the BET Awards, BET Hip-Hop Awards, the Soul Train Awards and American Music Awards – all during a pandemic. In today’s announcement, Save the Music Foundation noted that Collins serves as an ideal role model for students as someone whose success “falls perfectly in line wi...

Here Are the Most & Least Crowded Categories for the 2022 Grammys

There are surprises galore here. Music videos are sometimes thought to be decades past their peak, but there are more entries for best music video (1,185) than for any other category — even record and song of the year. Similarly, rock is sometimes portrayed as being on its last legs, but rock leads in two classifications: There are more entries for best rock song than for any other genre song award and more entries for best rock performance than for any other genre performance award. Among genre album categories, best rock album is third, behind best score soundtrack for visual media (includes film, television, video games and other visual media) and best spoken word album (includes poetry, audiobooks and storytelling). The fact that those two categories include so many subcategories...

Here’s Where Justin Bieber’s ‘Peaches’ & More Top 10 Hits Are Competing for 2022 Grammy Noms

Bieber’s 2021 album, Justice, is also vying for a nod as best pop vocal album, but the victory for Bieber is that his pop/soul jam “Peaches,” which could have gone either way, is competing in R&B — along with such other hits as Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open” and SZA’s “Good Days.” If “Peaches” is nominated, it would be Bieber’s first Grammy nod in an R&B category. But how about the other songs that were released in this eligibility year (Sept. 1, 2020, to Sept. 30, 2021) and became top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100? Let’s see where they wound up in the 64th annual Grammy Awards process. Note: Not all top 10 hits are listed here. Artists and their representatives are savvy enough not to flood the zone with multiple entries that could divide their support. So “Drivers Li...

Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, MC Lyte, Big Freedia & More Inducted Into Ebony Power 100 Class of 2021

Jam & Lewis were presented with the lifetime achievement award by Janet Jackson via video and singer MAJOR. onstage. Thanking “God in the sky and god on earth, Clarence Avant — the Black Godfather,” his family and Ebony (“I saw people that looked like myself”), Jam said the pair’s award “isn’t a place to stop but a bar set high that we will continue to try to raise every day.” After doing a quick “happy dance,” Lewis thanked his family as well, adding, “You could be in Billboard, Variety or any other magazine, but you didn’t make it until you were in Ebony or Jet. That was the bar. I love awards, but I love the journey that I’ve been on … and the journey that I’m going to be on with you.” Also among the individual ...

Here’s Where Genre-Bending Albums From Lil Nas X, Halsey, Miley Cyrus & More Landed for 2022 Grammys

Grammy voters have until Nov. 5 to make their choices. Even before first-round voting for the 64th annual Grammy Awards opened on Friday (Oct. 22), we knew that some albums wouldn’t be in the expected genre categories. Kacey Musgraves’ star-crossed was moved from best country album to best pop vocal album, while Bo Burnham’s Inside (The Songs) was slotted in best compilation soundtrack for visual media, not best comedy album, as had been expected. These were hardly the only albums that wound up on the Grammy ballot in places you might not expect. That’s bound to happen as artists increasingly cross genres. Albums often wind up right on the border between two or more genres. In those cases, the Recording Academy’s screening committee endeavors to put it in the most suitable category. Here a...
