Sheryl Underwood, co-host of CBS’ The Talk, hosted the Daytime Emmys for the fifth time. Red Table Talk won outstanding informative talk show, beating, among others, Red Table Talk: The Estefans. Jada Pinkett Smith co-hosts Red Table Talk with her daughter, “Whip My Hair” hitmaker Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris. Gloria Estefan co-hosts Red Table Talk: The Estefans with her daughters Emily and Lili Estefan. Both shows air on Facebook Watch. CBS Sunday Morning, which frequently runs profiles of top music artists, won outstanding morning show. The show’s host, Jane Pauley, formerly co-hosted NBC’s The Today Show, one of the other nominees in this category. The show included tributes to three TV legends who died in the past year — Regis Philbin, Alex Treb...
Beyoncé has had two nominated videos as a lead or co-lead artist three times, more than any other artist. Jay-Z, like Cardi B, has done it twice. But does having two nominated videos mean that Cardi B is so hot she is likely to win with one or the other, or that her competing entries are likely to split her votes so that neither one wins? The history of the BET Awards doesn’t yield a clear answer. In the nine previous times that an artist has had two nominated videos (as a lead or co-lead artist), that artist won five times. In the other four cases, somebody else won the award. Here’s a full list of artists who have had two video of the year nominees as lead or co-lead artists — and who won the award that year. OutKast, 2004: “Hey Ya!” and “The Way You Move” (featuring Sleepy Brown) ...
During Richie’s previously recorded speech, he spoke about some of the challenges he faced during his early years while trying to define his own sound in music. “This award is the heartfelt confirmation that when I have kids that walk up to me and say, ‘I wanna be like you,’ that’s when I figured I did the right thing.” Jones was the last to virtually accept his award. He said, “I did want to take a moment to share how honored I am to be recognized with this award and how proud I am that the doors of the National Museum of African American Music are open.” The star, who began his musical career at just 14, also noted that he was wearing a shirt that was gifted to him by the late Nelson Mandela 46 years ago. Jones said, “I know he’...
Other artists receiving multiple Stellar nominations include Tasha Cobbs Leonard, The Clark Sisters, Rev. Luther Barnes and the Restoration Worship Center Choir, the Chicago Mass Choir and co-host Carr. “After a challenging 2020, we are thrilled to return to the mainstage in one of the music epicenters of the world, Nashville,” said Don Jackson, founder of the Stellar Awards and chairman of Central City Productions, in a statement. “With a theme of ‘Lighting the Way with Our Faith, Music and Family,’ we are set to deliver an evening of inspiration and celebration…” “The 36th Annual Stellar Awards is sure to be the gospel celebration of the year,” said Carr in a statement. “I look forward to celebrating my peers, as well as those who have paved the way for gospel artists like myself.” Ticke...
“Nile is tremendously respected and admired by his peers and fans of all generations for being a musical pioneer,” said Linda Moran, SHOF president and CEO. “…Having him as a partner has been a very special and rewarding experience and the Songwriters Hall of Fame can ask for no better representative, both to the songwriting community and to the world at large.” Rodgers, 68, was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016. He was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in the award for musical excellence category, the following year. He has won three Grammys — all for his work on Daft Punk’s 2013 smash “Get Lucky” and the duo’s Random Access Memories album. As a songwriter and producer, Rodgers has been responsible not only for many hits with his former group Chic, su...
Bridgers also performed “Kyoto” on the show, which aired on YouTube. Most of the performances were pre-taped, but Fantastic Negrito performed “Chocolate Samurai” live. Other performances were by Arlo Parks (“Hope”), Black Pumas (“Colors”), Mavis Staples (“Who Told You That”), Lido Pimienta (“Te Queria”), Lecrae (“Drown”), Yuna (“Don’t Blame It on Love”) and Stax Academy Rhythm Section (medley). Staples received the independent icon award during the program. Staples, 81, fronted The Staple Singers, the famed gospel-turned-R&B family group, and has gone on to a significant solo career. Staples’ Grammy nominations span nearly the entire history of that awards show. She received her first, with The Staple Singers, in 1961 (the fourth year of the show) and her most recent this past year. Th...

Studio recording awards and industry award winners from the 55th ACM Awards weren’t properly recognized last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. ACM special awards are voted on by the ACM board of directors. The show is executive produced by Damon Whiteside, CEO of the ACM, and written and produced by Lisa Lee. Three of the awards will be presented posthumously: the ACM poet’s award to songwriter Curly Putman, guitar player of the year to J.T. Coren...
“We made history as the first live music awards show during the pandemic and now, we are excited to bring back a live audience to our show that will feature Latin music’s hottest stars, emerging artists, and honor remarkable individuals making their mark in the community and around the globe,” said Ignacio Meyer, SVP of Music, Nonfiction and Development at Univision, in a statement. This year, Premios Juventud added 14 new categories, including best regional Mexican collaboration, viral track of the year, girl power (best all-female collab), social dance challenge, and helping the fans, to name a few. While 37 may be awfully young to get a lifetime achievement award, it’s a good thing BET recognized Houston while she was still here to receive her flowers, to use a currently popular expression. Houston died unexpectedly in 2012 at age 48. Prince was also on the young side when he received a lifetime achievement award from BET. He was 52 when he received the honor in 2010. He too died unexpectedly in 2016 at age 57. Neither Houston nor Prince has yet received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy (though those awards are sometimes presented posthumously, so either may still receive it). Prince lived to see his induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in 2004). Houston did not live to see her Rock Hall induction (in 2020). The oldest solo artist to receive a lifetime ...
Here’s a closer look at the nominees. They’re listed in alphabetical order. Coi Leray: The rapper, 24, has two nominations. She’s also up for best female hip hop artist. Leray has placed two singles on the Billboard Hot 100: “No More Parties” (featuring Lil Durk, No. 26) and “Big Purr (Prrdd)” (featuring fellow nominee Poo Shiesty, No. 69). Coi is featured on YSL’s “I Like,” a track from Slime Language 2, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in May. Leray was Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop rookie of the month for April. As Neena Rouhani noted in a Q&A that announced that designation, “Despite the infancy of her career, the multi-faceted performer has already collaborated with a plethora of fellow charting rappers, including Gunna, DDG and Yung Bleu.” In addition, Leray has released ...
Kane Brown may have taken home the most awards with two new trophies to add to his shelf, but there were plenty of winning performances. Here are seven unranked can’t miss moments: Chris Stapleton, “Arkansas”Performing from a huge stage set up Bonaroo farm —Stapleroo or Chrisapalooza anyone?— Stapleton channeled Bob Seger’s “Katmandu” with this driving tune about road tripping (and escaping) from current album, Starting Over. Stapleton was in peak growl form, with wife Morgane sounding great as ever on backing vocals. As the lyrics state, it looked like Stapleton was “havin’ so much fun that it’s probably a little bit against the law.” If this one didn’t make you miss live concerts, nothing will. Jack Ingram, Miranda Lambert and Jon Randall, “Tequila Does”Sitting around a campfi...
