Racism on the Road: The Oral History of Black Artists Touring in the Segregated South

“We were happy, we were singing, we were joyful, we were away from home for the first time, youngsters on a magical show,” recalls Martha Reeves, lead singer of the girl group Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, who toured through the South as part of Motown’s pioneering tours in the early ’60s. “But being met with the hatred, it was alarming — especially when the bus was shot at.” Below, Billboard presents an oral history of Black touring artists in the ’50s and ’60s, including interviews with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and one-hit wonders, stars from the Motown and Stax soul labels, and veterans of the Motown Revue and Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars. All remain shocked and angry at the racism they experienced, mostly in the South, but a...

It was smooth, sweet, warm. And the coaches loved what they saw. “Sid has a whole package going on, but I love Bailey’s voice a lot,” noted Gwen Stefani. “Bailey, you have such a gift. It’s really really beautiful and I love your tone,” Kelly Clarkson enthused. On this occasion, Kingsley had the edge. At least that’s what Stefani, Clarkson and Blake Shelton figured. “I think both of you are incredible,” John Legend said. And with that, he surprised his fellow coaches and went with Bailey Rae. Not so fast. As time ticked away, Clarkson stole Kingsley. Watch it all unfold below. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. So we reimagined what a dating should be. Coming in at No. 2 on the midweek chart is Confetti, just 2,200 combined sales behind Disco. It’s the most streamed album so far, and the biggest-selling title on CD, the OCC reports. Little Mix, winners of ITV’s The X Factor back in 2011, have hit the Top 5 with all their first five albums, with Glory Days from 2016 going to No. 1. Completing an all-new top three is Shirley Bassey’s farewell set I Owe It All To You (Decca) at No. 3. It’s shaping up to be the veteran Welsh singer’s highest-charting album in more than 40 years. Another Welsh artist is aiming for a Top 10 debut, Aled Jones. The classical singer’s Blessings (BMG) is new at No. 8, while Birmingham rapper Dutchavelli (real name Stephan Allen) is one place behind with his debut mixtape Dutch From The 5th (Parlophone). Ariana Grande Bags Chart Double In U.K.

Over on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, “Positions” enters a second week at No. 1, while two more tracks from the LP crack the Top 40. Grande’s “34+35” is new at No. 9 and “Motive” featuring Doja Cat is at No. 16, extending her list of U.K. Top 40 hits to 28. She’s the fourth artist to achieve the chart double in 2020 (Drake, Eminem and Stormzy are the others), and the first female artist to score consecutive chart double wins in almost ten years (Rihanna did it in 2011). Thanks to Grande’s chart domination, Sam Smith misses out on top spot with Love Goes (Capitol), new at No. 2 on the albums survey. It’s the end of a golden streak for Smith, whose previous two albums hit the summit of the national albums survey. Veteran singer Cliff Richard rounds out an all-new Top 3 with Music… The Air...

Ariana Grande, Midnight Oil Burn Bright on Australia’s Charts

The Makarrata Project features the band collaborating with Indigenous artists and First Nations people including Jessica Mauboy, Kev Carmody, Troy Cassar-Daley, Dan Sultan and Frank Yamma, and includes the previously-released numbered, “Gadigal Land.” It’s a bittersweet result for the politically-charged rock band. Bass player Bones Hillman, who joined the band in 1987 and has been with them ever since, died Saturday (Nov. 7) after a battle with cancer. With Peter Garrett and Co. claiming top spot, Ariana Grande has to settle for a No. 2 bow with Positions, though its title track enters a second week at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and is one of eight tracks from the LP to impact this week’s Top 50. The U.S. pop star previously ruled the albums survey with My Everything (September 2014)...

First Country: New Music From Jason Aldean, Billy Ray Cyrus, Barry Gibb and Jason Isbell

Barry Gibb and Jason Isbell, “Words of a Fool” The first release from Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers Songbook Vol 1, is also the only previously unreleased track on this collection — which pairs The Bee Gees’ Barry Gibb with some of country’s biggest names on recordings of the sibling trio’s greatest hits. This poignant, organ-drenched waltz sounds like it’s existed forever. Isbell and Gibb, of course, acquit themselves well here — but if a song ever cried out for George Jones to come back and sing, this is it. Billy Ray Cyrus, The Singin’ Hills Sessions – Mojave Understandably emboldened by the tremendous success of his appearance on the remix of Lil Nas X’s Grammy-wining “Old Town Road,” Cyrus opens this EP, the second in his The Singin’ Hills Session series, with a twa...

5 Questions With Depeche Mode Ahead of Their Rock Hall Induction

MG: I think that we have always had a very electronic foundation, but we embraced a lot of rock traditions a long time ago. We used to be electronic purists, but that changed at some point during the ‘80s when we started using guitars and other instruments, so I have no problem with being called rock. Despite deals with majors, Depeche Mode has maintained a long-standing loyalty to Mute Records. How essential was Mute to the success of early Depeche Mode? MG: I think we were very lucky to bump into Daniel very early on in our career and to get to work with him. He was like a father figure to us, really. Even though he wasn’t that old, he had a lot more experience than us. He’s really helped to guide our career from day one and is still part of the story today. He’s still involved in all as...

Kylie Minogue Gets the Party Started With ‘Disco’: Stream It Now

Speaking to fellow antipodean Zane Lowe on Apple Music earlier this week, Kylie shared her vision for a Disco tour, whenever that may be. “It’s a dreamscape right now, the idea of touring, if, when, how, if, when, why, what. But my vision I have, whether this would come to be or not, is usually the concert is… I’ve never performed in the Round,” she enthused. The Melbourne native imagines “the biggest disco ball ever made” dominating the ultimate superclub. “And I just would love the idea of a show where almost people don’t feel like they have to look at what’s going on on stage. We’re just all at a big nightclub.” The pop princess performed songs from it during last month’s global streaming event Kylie: Infinite Disco, co-directed by Kate Moross and Rob...

Jason Isbell Promises to Cut a Charity Covers Album If Biden Wins Georgia

Should Biden complete a come-from-behind win, Isbell tweeted, “I’m gonna make a charity covers album of my favorite Georgia songs- REM, Gladys Knight, Vic Chesnutt, Allmans, Cat Power, Precious Bryant, Now It’s Overhead, etc… And damn is that gonna be fun.” The Alabama native’s offer captured Twitter’s heart and got a lot of love from the artist community. Richard Marx responded, “F—ing love this.” Brandi Carlile chimed in and asked if they could do “Kid Fears” by the Indigo Girls and Jason would sing the Michael Stipe part. Don’t bet against that charity covers album coming to fruition. At 2.45am ET, president Trump’s lead over Biden in Georgia narrowed to just 665 votes, with a few thousand ballots yet to be counted. Isbell is known for his solo career, his work with The 400 ...
