HipHopWired Featured Video CLOSE Source: Tim Mosenfelder / Getty Azealia Banks might not be releasing music at the clip she did at the top of her career, but she still gets the people talking. The Harlem rapper posted a series of social media posts taking aim at the likes of Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and past target Kanye West. Azealia Banks took to Instagram Stories this week and fired off missives toward some of the biggest names in entertainment. Banks had plenty of pointed marital advice for Beyoncé, going so far as to say the singer is “sad” and to leave her husband, Jay-Z, for a “Jamaican man.” “Hate comparing, but Bey really dropped the ball on the aspirational pieces,” Banks began. “She looks sooooo obviously sad with JAY-Z, and watching that every drain year after year just turns me off fro...

Beyonce Is the Fourth Woman to Score 10 No. 1s on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart

Beyoncé joins rarefied air on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as she becomes only the fourth solo woman to claim double-digit champs since the list became an all-encompassing genre ranking in 1958. She punches her ticket with “Break My Soul,” which hits No. 1 on the list dated Aug. 13. Aretha Franklin leads the No. 1 club among solo women (with 20), while Janet Jackson (16) and Mariah Carey (10) also have at least 10 leaders. “Soul” advances from No. 4 to the top slot after a surge in streams and sales following the July 29 release of parent album Renaissance, which concurrently tops the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums lists. “Soul,” meanwhile, also ascends to No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, where it becomes Beyoncé’s eighth solo champ. The track register...

Beyoncé Enlists Madonna for ‘The Queens Remix’ of ‘Break My Soul’ & Yes, It’s Iconic

Get ready to strike a pose and vogue, because Beyoncé and Madonna have come together as one for “Break My Soul (The Queens Remix).” Queen Bey enlisted the Queen of Pop for the new edition of “Break My Soul” after she recently dropped four remixes of the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 smash by will.i.am, Terry Hunter, Honey Dijon and Nita Aviance. But for this remix, Bey pays homage to iconic Black women in music while taking a page out of Madonna’s playbook by reciting the names in the style of Madge’s spoken-word section from her 1990 three-week Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 smash “Vogue.” The disco-tinged house track — which also topped the Dance Club Songs tally — name-checks famous “Golden Age” actors from Marlon Brando to James Dean to Grace Kelly to Bette Davis. But when Bey takes over the ...

Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Controversies, From Kelis Sample to Lyric Changes

Beyoncé’s highly anticipated Renaissance release was full of excitement and dancefloor-ready hits, but did not come without its share of drama. Throughout her seventh album’s rollout, Bey has navigated an unexpected leak, frustrations over interpolations, shade about the number of songwriters credited on the tracks due to those interpolations and post-release lyric changes due to the use of offensive language in the song “Heated.” And while there were a few bumps in the journey, it’s still smooth sailing for Queen Bey, as Renaissance is heading for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart with one of the biggest weeks of the year. If it opens atop the chart, it will be the first album released by a woman in 2022 to hit No. 1. All six of her solo studio albums also deb...

Oh Bey Have: Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Faces Criticism From Monica Lewinsky & Anti-Ableist Community

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Robert Gauthier / Getty Beyoncé has ushered in a Renaissance—but it appears not everyone is thrilled. Following backlash and criticism from disability advocates, Bey announced that she will remove the word “spaz” from one of her new songs, “Heated.” Used twice in the spicy song, Queen Bey was heard singing, “Spazzin’ on that ass, spaz on that ass.” Though the word was ostensibly used in a colloquial way to mean going crazy or wild, “spaz” — which is derived from “spastic” — has a history of being used as a slur for those with disabilities, especially cerebral palsy. According to a statement released to Rolling Stone, Beyonce’s team pledged to change the lyric saying: “The word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced.” Staying true ...
