Jamie Lynn Spears Defends Sister Britney: ‘She Is A Strong, Badass, Unstoppable Woman’

It’s been a disturbing few days for Kanye West on social media. After a series of tweet-rants where he alleged that his wife, Kim Kardashian West, and her mother, Kris Jenner, had conspired to commit him and that he’d been trying to obtain a divorce, Kardashian West, today (July 22) stressed, “Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behavior know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor,” in a detailed Twitter thread of her own. Earlier this week, as Kanye’s words began to proliferate Twitter — words that, as Kardashian West noted, “[sometimes] do not align with his intentions” — fellow celebs like Questlove and Halsey were quick to remind folks that mental illness is real, and in Halsey’s words, “person...

Respect The Architects

Harlem-based producer Crystal Caines has always been the master of her own fate. Raised in a musical household by Guyanese parents, she began making her own music around 16 years old. She started out just wanting to sing, then began to rap, but wasn’t getting the sound she wanted from producers she knew, so she started to make her own beats. A friend gave her a keyboard and she taught herself how to record, mix and produce. “From then on it was a blessing for me to be able to take what I felt here and put it on wax.” Caines released her first single, “Whiteline,” in 2014 and went on to collaborate with A$AP Ferg, MIA and Baauer. Inspired by everyone from Trackmasters to the Neptunes, she crafted a sound thick with 808s and sample-based melodies driven by closed hi-hats. “Everything gotta h...

Kanye West Says He Had COVID-19 Yet Takes Anti-Vaccine Stance

In the past month, we’ve heard Kanye West on two new songs and seen him donate $2 million to the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. We’ve also seen him announce (again) a 2020 presidential candidacy bid, despite reportedly filing no actual paperwork. But Kanye is Kanye, and with his Travis Scott collaboration “Wash Us in the Blood” also came the announcement of a new album, titled God’s Country, apparently coming soon. You know what this means: Kanye’s in album promo mode. And with that comes a freewheeling new feature in Forbes, out today (July 8) that sees him, among other things, come out as an anti-vaxxer. “When they say the way we’re going to fix [COVID-19] is with a vaccine, I’m extremely cautious,”...

According to The New York Times, Ventura County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Eric Buschow said in a news conference that Rivera had rented a boat on Wednesday afternoon. Approximately three hours after the two left the dock, another boater found a boat drifting with a child, reportedly Rivera’s son, asleep. CNN reports that the child “said they went swimming but the mother didn’t get back on the boat.” The child was wearing a life vest, while an adult-sized life vest was discove...

Joel Schumacher’s Fire: How The Batman Director Shaped The Past And Present Of MTV

By Aaron Cooley When director Joel Schumacher died at the age of 80 last week, the lion’s share of the media attention focused on his iconic four-decade filmography, from St. Elmo’s Fire and The Lost Boys in the 1980s, to two John Grisham adaptations and two Batmans in the ’90s, to Phone Booth and Phantom of the Opera in this century. And of course, his resumé includes his own personal stamp on the music video era of early MTV, with videos for INXS, Seal, U2, and Bush. But left largely anonymous — just the way he wanted it — was the work he actually considered the most important of his life. This was work he also did for MTV, and he did it all for free. When I started working for Joel as his assistant in 2002, there was no better perk of the job than traveling to New York at his side. Joel...

Katy Perry Calls For Justice For Breonna Taylor And Tony McDade In Stonewall Day Speech

June 2020 has been no ordinary Pride Month. What is typically a colorful commemoration of love, community, and the richness of LGBTQ+ identity has been largely overshadowed by an ongoing pandemic, which has forced gay bars to close, parades to be canceled, and people to celebrate from home. But in many ways, it has also been a return to the holiday’s protest roots, with many people around the country taking to the streets to demand justice for Black lives. Pop idol Katy Perry spoke to the complexities of these intersecting movements in a somber, yet hopeful, address during Stonewall Day, the star-studded Pride Live event honoring the anniversary and legacy of the six-day riots in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York that spawned the gay liberation movement. Wearing dangling, ra...

In the minute-long address that followed, Lovato called for people to d...

“The Stonewall Inn has been such a symbol of rebellion in the face of oppression, and such a safe place for people,” Taylor Swift said on Friday (June 26), addressing a virtual audience during Stonewall Day. The celeb-stacked Pride Live event honored the legacy of the six-day riots that took place at the New York gay bar in 1969, which launched the gay liberation movement — and today, Pride Month. In recent weeks, Swift has been especially vocal about her support of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as those taking to the streets to demand justice for Black lives in the wake of the police killings of unarmed Black citizens George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and many more. In her candid, nearly two-minute-long speech, she reiterated her excitement about the Supreme Cour...
