After taking on Seinfeld the day before, Seth Rogen and his Table Reads series at Netflix Is a Joke Festival went in a decidedly different direction on Monday night by reading through Ice Cube and DJ Pooh’s 1995 stoner classic Friday. One of the highlights of the performance, naturally, was the recreation of the scene in which Deebo launches Red into the air after the latter asks for his bike back, leading Smokey to exclaim, “You got knocked the fuck out!” With Rogen giving stage directions, O’Shea Jackson Jr. stood in for his father Ice Cube’s character Craig Jones. GaTa filled in as Chris Tucker’s Smokey with Brian Simpson as DJ Pooh’s Red and Lil Rel Howery as Tiny “Zeus” Lister Jr.’s Deebo. After promising to get Craig high because “It’s Friday, you ain’t got no job, and...
This article is part of our coverage of the 2022 Netflix Is a Joke: The Festival. During an era of “wokescolds” on the left and free speech panic from the right, comedian-actor Larry David remains the same. It’s been 20 years since the first episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm aired, and David’s semi-fictional persona of a man with zero social awareness or ability to learn from his mistakes still draws an audience in the far more tense political climate of 2022. In fact, the long-running HBO series was recently renewed for a 12th season. In a conversation with fellow Curb alum Robert B. Weide at Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival in Los Angeles, the 74-year old comedian was asked to explain, basically, why his show still exists. “How have you not been cancelled? How do you get away with this?” as...
As the world continues to burn in a ridiculous socio-political dumpster fire, George Carlin’s brand of cynical, no-holds-barred comedy proves all the more relevant. That means it’s the perfect time for George Carlin’s American Dream, a new documentary honoring the late comedian by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio. Watch a trailer for the two-part film below. Among the comics who sing Carlin’s praises include Stephen Colbert, Patton Oswalt, and Jon Stewart, who appear in the documentary’s trailer to spit off the legend’s seven dirty words with childlike glee. Elsewhere, Jerry Seinfeld puts Carlin’s influence simply: “I wanted to be just like him.” The documentary covers the comedian’s full life story, from his early, foul-mouthed success to his latter-day comeback and all the cocaine ...
Netflix Is a Joke Festival continued on Sunday night with Seth Rogen’s Table Reads series, which saw the comedian and his famous friends perform three classic episodes of Seinfeld on behalf of his Hilarity for Charity Alzheimer’s nonprofit. In one such performance, Rogen, Jack Black, Aziz Ansari, and Kathryn Hahn ran through the sitcom’s classic “Shrinkage” scene. The “Shrinkage” discussion occurs in the Season 5 Seinfeld episode “The Hamptons,” in which Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine travel to see a friend’s baby on Long Island. After everyone but George sees his girlfriend, Jane, topless on the beach, he attempts to get back at them by sneaking a peek at Jerry’s girlfriend, Rachel. However, Rachel barges in on George changing instead, where she laughs at his, uh, post-sw...

A documentary on the late, great Andy Kaufman is finally in the works. Emmy-nominated filmmaker Alex Braverman will direct a forthcoming deep dive into the comedy legend’s life, up until a battle with cancer cut it short in 1984 at age 35. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the feature project has just started production, with Josh and Benny Safdie executive producing via their company Elara Pictures. Kaufman’s life was previously memorialized in the 1999 biopic Man on the Moon, in which Jim Carrey portrayed the Saturday Night Live star. This currently untitled project, however, will mark the ...
