The classic Sherlock Holmes mythos are getting a dose of Girl Power in Netflix’s new action comedy Enola Holmes. Based on Nancy Springer’s The Enola Holmes Mysteries book series, the movie stars Millie Bobby Brown in the title role, and the latest trailer finds her taking on her first case. When the Holmes’ mother, Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter) goes missing, Enola calls on her brothers, the famous detective Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and government official Mycroft (Sam Claflin). However, instead of helping her track down mommy dearest, Mycroft is determined to turn Enola into a proper lady of the world. Too bad for him she’s a badass, butt-kicking, clue-cracking woman of her own design who can even stay a step ahead of the great Sherlock. She sets off to find her mother with the help of a k...
This review originally ran as part of our Sundance 2020 coverage. The Pitch: By now, we all know the story of Nikola Tesla, spurned early 20th-century inventor and rival of Thomas Edison who invented alternating current, only to die penniless, his name largely lost to history until Christopher Nolan, Elon Musk, and the Fuck Yeah Science! corners of the Internet rehabilitated his unconventional genius. (Best not to mention the fact he was also a eugenicist, but that’s neither here nor there.) Now, one of America’s most under-appreciated minds has a full-throated biopic, with Ethan Hawke in the title role, charting his rags-to-riches-to-rags story. Of course, this being a Michael Almereyda joint, things get deeply weird. Welcome to Your Life: Make no mistake: Tesla ain’t your ...
Hulu is prepping for spooky season in September 2020. Next month, the streamer is unlocking a bunch of tricks and treats: Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left, Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II, James Cameron’s The Terminator, and — get this — every single movie in the Twilight series. Vamps unite! Also exciting is the premiere of Keith Knight’s new irreverent comedy series Woke. The show follows a Black cartoonist whose career success is slightly derailed when an unexpected incident changes everything in his life. What’s more, Hulu is porting over all the goodies from FX. That includes the new season from Archer and the highly anticipated fourth season of Noah Hawley’s Fargo, which was postponed way, way back in April. Check out the full list below, pick up some Halloween candy, and, of course,...
We’re under two weeks away from the much anticipated release of Bill & Ted Face the Music, which means it’s time for a most excellent promotional push from Orion Pictures. After moving up the VOD release date to August 28th and sharing a casting featurette, the studio has now delivered the very first clip from the threequel. Entitled simple “The Future,” the brief scene finds William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and Theodore “Ted” Logan (Keanu Reeves) meeting a new face from, well, the future. Kristen Schaal steps out of the egg-shaped time machine to introduce herself as Kelly, the daughter of Bill and Ted’s old friend Rufus. The character’s name is a most triumphant nod to the late, great Rufus actor George Carlin, whose actual daughter is also named Kelly. But the clip...
The Pitch: Disney’s made the shift once more with The One and Only Ivan, a family adventure drama that was originally slated for theatrical release but has since moved to Disney+. Like many of their classics, this new movie is all about a group of scrappy, heroic animals banding together to go on an epic journey, replete with an A-List cast and computer effects. But does it work on the small screen? A True Story … Kind Of: The One and Only Ivan is a halfway decent live-action/CGI fable that makes a fatal mistake at the very end. Based on the children’s novel of the same name by K.A. Applegate, this film is inspired by a true story of a silverback gorilla who rose to fame as the star attraction of a circus in a suburban American mall all while tapping into his artistic abilities as a painte...
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is getting a remake. As Deadline reports, Paramount Pictures has commissioned a modern update of John Hughes’ 1987 holiday classic with stars Will Smith and Kevin Hart in the lead. Brooklyn 99 and Woke writer Aeysha Carr will pen the script and make her feature film screenwriting debut. Not surprisingly, both Smith and Hart will also serve as producers on the project via Westbrook Studios and Hartbeat Productions, respectively. The original film starred Steve Martin and the late John Candy as two unlikely bedfellows who are forced to rely on each other as they find a way home before the Thanksgiving holiday. At the center of it all is a gooey heart beating with teary drama. Whether or nor this remake will similarly bring us to tears remains to be seen. The j...
Fast Times at Ridgemont High is getting the A-list all-star treatment. On Friday, August 21st, Dane Cook is bringing together a who’s who lineup of blockbuster celebrities, who will all read Cameron Crowe’s script for Amy Heckerling’s iconic 1982 teen hit. As of press time — because, really, this list keeps on givin’ — the lineup includes OG star Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Morgan Freeman, Shia LaBeouf, Matthew McConaughey, Henry Golding, and Jimmy Kimmel. “I wanted to do something that lightens the mood, can help people, and, at the same time, I wanted to do something that felt celebratory, because we don’t have movies,” Cook told Extra on Monday afternoon. Organizers have described the event as an “unrehearsed, anything-goes table read,” which means fans o...
