Lady A on Creating a New Album During the Pandemic, The Other Lady A & The Power of Music

The album’s opening track, “Talk of this Town,” written by Haywood, Kelley and Scott with Nicolle Galyon and Jordan Reynolds, looks at what it feels to be the topic of conversation, whether it’s gossip about a relationship or other issues and, more obliquely, refers to “sort of the things [the band] went through last year,” Haywood says. Haywood is referring to the controversy that erupted last year when the group changed their name from Lady Antebellum to Lady A to move away from the association the word “antebellum” has with with the pre-Civil War era and slavery. The name change led to a lawsuit involving blues singer Anita White, who also performs as Lady A. “It’s all about trademark rights, so we’re just letting our lawyers figure it all out,” Kelley says, “but it’s been a very intere...

Tanzania will spend $470 million buying vaccines and supporting economic sectors hit hard by the coronavirus, President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on Monday. Since Hassan took office after the death of then-president John Magufuli in March, the government has changed tack from playing down the pandemic to calling for social distancing and emphasising mask wearing in public. Issuing the first data on infections since May 2020, Hassan said there were more than 100 Covid-19 patients in Tanzania as of last Saturday, with 70 of them being provided oxygen. Half of the cash will be spent on vaccines, protective gear and other medical equipment, Hassan said, with the rest going to stimulate sectors that are reeling from the crisis. She did not give details about the sectors but tourism, one of the t...

They are also required to take Covid-19 tes...

Senator backs Nigerian government on grazing routes

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Agriculture, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has asked the Federal Government to go ahead with its plan to recover the old cattle grazing routes because herdsmen activities affect every part of the country. Adamu, who also served as a two-time governor of Nasarawa State, disagreed with those who argued that the Federal Government should not dabble into grazing issues because it had no constitutional powers to do so. The Senator, who spoke with newsmen in Abuja, said herdsmen needed the cattle routes because of the challenges they usually faced when they wanted to adopt other forms of transportation. He said the Federal Government should attend to the welfare of herdsmen just as it was providing basic amenities for others involved in private businesses across the ...

Petrol smuggling: Nigerian government using device to track trucks, smugglers

The Federal Government says it has facilitated the use of a tracking device to track every truck loading petroleum product from any of its depots as part of efforts to nip smuggling in the bud and arrest culprits. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, said this at a forum organised by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to gauge the achievements recorded in the oil and gas sector in the last two years. Sylva noted that a lot had been achieved in the industry but that the activities of smugglers had continued to overshadow the successes especially as it concerned fuel subsidy and the quantity of petroleum products consumed in the country. “This is one big question that we try to answer ourselves because when we look at the number of load-outs from our depots every day...
