Back in September, James Blake released his official studio cover of Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed”. On Thursday, the UK crooner brought his acclaimed rendition to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Broadcasting outside from a wooded area, Blake performed the Blonde cut on his trusty piano (and still with his blonde-dyed hair). The whole thing was wonderfully serene, especially with the sunlight peeking through the canopy of trees around him. Blake, of course, is intimately acquainted with “Godspeed”, as he provided both production and arrangement on Ocean’s original version. Watch the video replay below. Blake has been on a bit of a covers streak since the pandemic began. In recent months, he’s also tackled Nirvana’s “Come as You Are”, Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You”, Radiohead’s ...
In the lead-up to the 2020 Election, ANOHNI has already released not one, but two anti-Trump protest songs, “R.N.C.” and a collaboration with CocoRosie and Big Freedia titled “End of the Freak Show”. With mere hours to go before the big day, the art pop musician has shared a cover of the Gloria Gaynor classic “I Will Survive”, which she uses to rail against the current administration and all the hate and injustices it has perpetuated the last four years. Slowed down to achieve an almost dramatic ballad status, ANOHNI’s rendition comes with a video featuring footage of her performing in the ’90s. Towards the end of the clip, ANOHNI dedicates the song to “all endangered Black trans lives”; “all those awaiting execution in US death chambers”; “those in the US who die from medical neglect”; “t...
The Offspring have released their first-ever holiday song, a cover of the Darlene Love classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”. Along with the single, the band has promised new music in early 2021. As frontman Dexter Holland pointed out in a press release, the band felt it was a good time to bring some holiday cheer to their fans. “It just seemed like the world could use a nice holiday song right now,” remarked Holland. “We’ve always been huge fans of Darlene Love, so when the idea came up to do a Christmas song, we jumped at the chance to record that one … and tried not to wreck it!” The punk-rock veterans actually deliver a pretty faithful rendition of tune, with their version produced by Bob Rock (Metallica, Mötley Crüe). The original 1963 version was famously produced by Phil Spect...
