In case you missed it, SPIN’s Untitled Twitch Stream is coming off a stellar week featuring an entire afternoon with Iration and live performances with Cobi, Maddox Jones, and the National Parks. Plus, there was that secret little surprise interview with Louis the Child over the weekend. This week might be even better though, as we’re celebrating the release of Skeleton Coast by The Lawrence Arms with an exclusive performance by Brendan Kelly, plus hearing from Rich Aucoin alongside the release of his new single and a whole lot more. We may even drop an unannounced Ghost of Tsushima stream or two this weekend in honor of the game’s release, but you’ll have to stay tuned to find out. It’s sure to be a busy week, so keep yourself informed through Twitter an...
Source: skynesher / Getty In the sometimes virulent world of social media, one may have come across the word simp, which is almost universally said as a pejorative. However, the history of the word itself dates back and the New York Times is the latest publication to tackle the word and its apparent rise in modern culture. Ezra Marcus and Jonah Engel Bromwich tackled the root history of the word in a feature-length piece that published earlier this week, following in the footsteps of Metro, Inside Hook, and University of Stirling’s Brig Newspaper before it. In, ahem, simple terms, the word “simp” dates back to the early 20th Century and was explained then as the shortening of the word simpleton. However, as the Times notes in its piece, the word itself took on new life in the 1980s when To...

Third Eye Blind founder, singer and songwriter Stephan Jenkins has interests that go beyond music. He will be sharing his viewpoints on a variety of issues on SPIN. Today, he takes a look at what is culture and how that defines who we are: “When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, unpitied…” E.burke The first pop song I ever heard was I want you back by the Jackson 5. I was all in for music for life right then and there. I was 6-years-old. I played for hours every day on my neighbor’s drums along with James Brown and Bob Marley for years until, by the age of 16, Clyde Stubblefield’s and Carly Barrett’s rhythms were ingrained in me. I believe I have an authentic lyrical style, but it would not exist without the daisy age of hip hop, and I would not sing...

Juneteenth historically has been a series of days, the ‘teen’ days of June, when we celebrate the end of slavery. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union Gen. Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas that all previously enslaved people in Texas were free — even though the Emancipation Proclamation had formally freed them almost two-and-a-half years earlier. On Dec. 6, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. It abolished slavery in the United States and said that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” So, although we celebrate an end to slavery, the 13th Amendment sti...

This article originally appeared in the March 1997 issue of SPIN. What did you think the first time you read the script? I was like is this a parody? I remember one of my lines was: “But we can’t turn our back on fear. Fear is our only defense.” I mean, who talks like that? Overall, I saw it as much closer to The Wizard of Oz than Star Trek. You’ve got a pirate, a wizard, a farm boy, a princess, and an evil overlord. We could’ve been traveling in a horse-drawn carriage. Did you know all along that Darth Vader was Luke’s father? No, and I was always asking. George told me that Luke’s father fell into a volcano. I wondered about Luke’s mother, too. I always thought that she should’ve been disguised as Boba Fett, that I could pull off Boba Fest’s mask and it’d be my mother who’d been secretly...
Third Eye Blind founder, singer and songwriter Stephan Jenkins has interests that goes beyond music. He will be sharing his viewpoints on a variety of issues on SPIN. Today, as a new wave of COVID-19 sweeps America, he takes on those who refuse masks in public: Are you crying out to be liberated from the tyranny of wearing a mask in public and politely staying the fuck away from me at the market? Of course not. Like the rest of us, you’re tucked into your bandana trying to dodge those bastards. Recently, Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered wearing masks in public as NYC opens this month. More cities will follow suit. This, along with the swill, promulgated from the top that public mask-wearing is PC weakness, suggests encounters with the aggressively unmasked increase as we all venture back into pub...
